— Good —I would do away with handicaps if I was in charge of the BHA. They encourage non triers, and penalise those who run their horses on their merits.
Interesting views on turf/aw marks. As Tuffers has probably mentioned in other posts, we have just bought Tourist out of the Derek Shaw yard and sent him to Ian in the hope that he can improve him in the same way that he has done with Feet Of Fury and Carter. Tourist currently has an aw mark of 68, and a turf mark of 55. If we started him on turf and he won a couple with his mark going up to 65, would you forsee him changing the aw mark? Very unlikely. Should he win on the aw and go up to 80. Would he change his turf mark? Very likely. Doesn’t really make sense does it?
Today I’m looking at the 3.35 at York, and the 8.50 and 9.20 at Kempton
Guga has been very strong all day. Providing he does not go off too hard early then I would expect him to win. Last night I was expecting 6 or 7/1, so taking 7/2 is nothing to get too excited about, but he is the best handicapped horse in a very weak race.
Easter went on for longer than I thought!
Looking at Guga in the 4.50 at Yarmouth today, won’t be getting involved at the current price, but hoping he will drift out before getting hammered late.
Off to Doncaster Bloodstock Sales tomorrow, then away for the weekend so that will be it until next Tuesday. Have a good Easter.
NO BET the call in both races today
I totally agree AP. I’ve said similar things in the past about how human atmosphere seems to effect equine performance. I’ve seen yards where there has been unrest on account of divorce, death, BHA investigation etc. and it has conincided in a loss of form from the stable.
Might make interesting reading if anyone has data on stable yards form before and after a BHA investigation.
Zarkava,
Unfortunately for me because I’m always looking for horses that may have been plotted up, it means that I will be backing horses from unsavoury yards that may not be off. As a result I have to accept that every now and then I will be on a non trier, and will know my fate before the stalls have even opened. In sprints it’s amazing how many drifters miss the break when they’ve had no trouble getting away on terms in the past.
Over the years I’ve got very good at reading the markets, today I got it wrong with Tombi, he will have his day this year, trying to predict it may not be easy though.
I ended up leaving the 4.00 at Southwell and the 5.10 at Pontefract alone. Tomorrow I will be looking at the 2 middle distance handicaps at Epsom.
Tuffers,
I did look at Wildcat but his run 16 days ago was awful, I would expect him to pop up at some point during the summer though.
3.10 Ponte. – The 2 that I’m interested in are Tombi and Crown Choice, both have gone well fresh. The difference between the 2 is that if Tombi can bounce back to his best for a new yard I think he will win, Crown Choice needs to improve trying 6 furlongs for the first time. The market vibes for both are good, Crown Choice is currently 7/1, and Tombi is 9/1. I will back both as I don’t think the race has a great amount of depth, and I want to take the top two in the market on.
Tuesday 19th April – 3.10 Ponte. 4.00 South. 5.10 Ponte.
Yes. Betty.
I always take Sundays off so no bets or form study, as a result there won’t be anything posted on here on a Sunday or Monday from me.
Week 1 – 0 winners 4 Bets, -4 points
I’ve read many and tried a few staking plans over the years, but now all of my bets are the same. Everyone is different but what I found is that when I had a losing run, or my confidence was knocked I would start having more 1 point bets, this in turn made me have more speculative bets and therefore increased the losing run. By the time one came along that I really fancied I wouldn’t have as much on as I should, and was then kicking myself if it won. So now I keep things simple, try and cut out the speculative bets, and no longer have the scenario of wishing I had more on the winner, which I’m sure you’ve all had. Psychology does play a part in punting, and I’ve learnt not to be hard on myself when backing a loser, and even more importantly not being hard on myself when I’ve had a winner.
Everyone has losing runs, but as long as your methodology is sound you will be fine in the long run.
Sparky,
I can assure you that Bookmakers don’t like winning punters, and they do close accounts. Essentially Bookmakers are now run by accountants, and they are constantly reviewing the accounts of their punters, if you are costing them money then they don’t want your custom.
Over a period of about three years, I had all of my phone or internet accounts closed or restricted, plus all of the accounts that I had set up under 3 friends names. Technically they don’t always close the account, but they restrict it to a level that makes it pointless betting with them. The person I spoke to at Stan James was very helpful after they had closed/restricted my account. He told me that they have a level of liability for each horse in every race, and depending on who the customer was they would lay them a percentage of that liability. If a serial loser wanted to back a certain horse they would lay him 100% of that liability which lets say has £1000 liability set against it, if the horse was 5/1 they would let him have up to £200 on it. With me they would only allow me 1% of that £1000 liability, so if it was 5/1 they would allow me £2!
The thing that really amazed me though, was when I had 2 people putting cash on in the local shops. After about 6 months one of my punters was approached by the area manager of Ladbrokes and told that they had been monitoring his bets, and they were now restricting his bets to £20 at SP only!
I now solely bet on Betfair, and as the previous poster said you will never be closed by them.
