Crikey, can we not cope without racing on but a handful of days a year (weather permitting)? 🙂 Let em have a (sort of) break.
Nothing wrong with quantity of meetings on what’s a holiday day for most. And it gives plenty of tracks across the country good opportunity to maximise footfall and profit.
For punters, like others have said, you can simply pick and choose select meetings you’d prefer, as opposed to feeling it’s overkill.
When a horse falls I look for them to be getting up, not the jockey – humans dont get shot for breaking a leg. It was obvious this poor animal died as he hit the ground and nothing could have been done for him.
I’m the same and look out only for the horses, but even many commentators mid-race only mention the jockey, and as you say it’s not generally them who pay the ultimate price.
I have only just got to see the entire race, as opposed to the finish, and it does nothing but enhance Sea The Stars’ performance. Superb.
I must say though, I sadly thought that Ian Bartlett’s commentary was a real disappointment, and far too flat and boring for such an important occasion.
Steanta’s viability had little to with racing involvement, in the same way that a number of poster’s dissatisfaction with the £20 per month charges has little to do with their own finances.
Any sane comparison of what you get for that £20 with other operators should show RUK’s charge to be excessive, particularly for a single channel covering only one half of the sport.Valid points, and a good call with the "half a sport" too.
Although I can understand why it is so high, I think they will lose plenty of people back at the £20 a month. I can afford, but it’s even worse value when you work five days a week, so let me tell you where I am – I’m out.
They will just have to hope there are enough diehards to make it viable.
At £20 they will sadly definitely be losing me, even though I’m fortunate enough to be able to afford it.
When you work 5 or 6 days a week during pretty much office hours, and have a family to entertain on day 7, it simply represents no value at all.
Terrible terrible news. RIP Exotic.
Good fun, and the wooden spoon so far with 58.
Missing Epsom, Goodwood, Newbury and Newmarket is surely inexcusable!
I think Mark Johnson and Richard Hoiles are far and away the best two commentators we have. I love the periodic excitable nature (the former more than the latter of course), which clearly illustrates they love their job – and they are consistently good whether calling the Grand National or a class 6 round Kempton.
Whats proper racing ground exactly?? And how soft was it last year???
Well, my interpretation of it is ground that isn’t going to slow a horse down or blunt its speed i.e. it’s probably fair to suggest Master Oats wouldn’t have sluiced up in a Gold Cup on goodish ground?
My comments weren’t necessarily to put down Denman – how can you forget the exhilarating Hennessy performance for example – more that I was really happy that Kauto put in a truly supreme display at Cheltenham.
Denman is an absolutely fantastic horse and made it a great race to watch, and I sincerely hope he’s back fully tuned up for round three next year. He might be the second in succession to regain his crown, and make it a deserved two Gold Cups apiece.
Kauto’s proved he’s the best horse on PROPER racing ground, and that’s the true yardstick. Denman is the king the softer it gets. They both ran fantastic races today.
I had a decent wager on it each-way at 10-1, but didn’t think the jockey had messed up at all, and was rather just gutted that one had simply sprung out of the pack to pip it.
I was at Aintree and saw his exuberant performance over the big fences – he seemed to be loving every minute, and was really pleased he held on despite getting tired and me backing the runner-up. Gutted for the horse. RIP.
Surprised some of you decide to write him off after one run.
It was after all his first run in 11 months, on an unfavourable track, and he galloped all bar one horse – which was on fire – into the ground.
If Madison hadn’t taken part, people would be saying what a fantastic performance it was.
He’s still a big Gold Cup player for me, despite me hoping Kauto wins it back.
A sad loss to the UK,
I wish him all the best.he is a great race caller
I agree, Johnson is one of the few decent callers we have, but good luck to him.
I may even tune in to the crappy US racing once in a while to check him out.
I was chuffed to bits Kauto won on Boxing Day, and really hope he gets to take on a fully fit Denman in the Gold Cup on proper good ground. He’s still the number one to my mind.
Sorry JT gave him a good ride if anything!!!!
FOF, I think you must have been watching a different race, I really do! I had no bet, only watching it on the evening replay afterwards, and was gobsmacked.
I agree it is very possible L’Ami may not have won, but he certainly was not given maximum assistance from the saddle, and that’s surely without question?
However much I watch, I can’t sway from believing anything other than the horse was ridden for second place, once Garde Champetre was seen to be on the premises. And if the latter hadn’t been there, I’m convinced the riding of L’Ami after the last fence would have been markedly different!
And I repeat, you don’t even need to be a Betfair account holder to monitor the markets. If a punter fails to adequately do this before striking a bet, then he/she has only themself to blame.
However, plenty of people will sometimes put their bets on in a morning before heading off to do something else, and have no time to ‘monitor the market’!
As someone said earlier, how come the BBC can get hold of these tapes and enhance the sound, yet this wasn’t done for the trial itself?!
