Can’t we all just get along? Three day festival. Like in the "good old days". Jumpers for goalposts. My old man’s a dustman.
There was the typical ‘ganging up’ on Big Mac this morning. Would anyone really expect anything else from Ted Walsh?
Did he mention getting a few "tears" into the horse?
I’m a bit torn on this one. In the circumstances and under police advice, they had little choice but to abandon this morning. I suspect that it may not have been practical to dismantle and transport the temporary structures in the time available (only to erect them again after racing!). In any case, there must have been concerns about the ability to accommodate the crowd without the tented areas – everyone would try to use the areas under the stands etc. There would have been obvious insurance problems and possibly problems with their licensing.
Having said that, this is a problem faced uniquely by the biggest of racing festivals. Without the corporate dimension to the festival, racing would surely have gone ahead. This makes me somewhat uncomfortable but it’s a feature of modern sport the world over and I’m also not comfortable in the role of a Luddite or indeed Canute.
It’s very tough on my fellow Irishmen and women, many of whom would have travelled over for just the first two days. The refund on the admission price won’t make much of a dent in their expenses and it must be an enormous disappointment.

Beantown (Menchikov)
Zaarito (Gold Award)Great little horse. I backed the fav but glad to see this one win once sizing faded. They pulled him up. He was swinging but found nothing – hope he’s OK.

Harry TrickerThanks for taking the trouble to organise this, Mr. B.
I’m not on Sizing Europe ante post but I have won a few quid on him in the past, including at a nice price in a maiden hurdle in Newbury a year and a half ago. Good to soft will be perfect, he’ll like the big field and he’ll get every yard of the trip. I have been hesitating but I’ll take a guaranteed 5/2 tomorrow morning if I can get it.
Had they priced up the dead heat? If not, should he not have got his money back?

Pearls before swine

Keep them coming. The swollen belly of a cheltenham monday needs a poetic midwife.
In fairness, he previously had a thread in the systems forum, which did not give any information on the system (if any) being employed. Given that he has taken the advice to move his selections to the lays and plays area, it’s probably not fair to continue to badger him for a system.
Made in Taipan is underpriced just because he finished a distant second to River Liane in a weak race at Leopardstown.
Mightn’t have been as weak as it looked! The Cooper horse has certainly been paid a compliment.
Today was encouraging for Sizing Europe fans with Henry de Bromhead having a 14/1 winner and a 20/1 second from his only two runners. It’s hardly crucial in trying to sort out a champion hurdle but good to see nonetheless.
I haven’t been following this story but is the suggestion that the tote will be sold without specific conditions on the minimum proportion of pools to be paid to winners? Would there be any mandatory contribution to the racing industry?
The live radio commentaries on the sporting life site are a useful feature and I like the layout of their ‘Fast Results’ section too. The free video form on the ATR site is handy.
Newmill had never run at Cheltenham before his win two years ago.
Having said that, the record of winners of the arkle and previous champion chases is certainly impressive in recent years. I think if I was going to take this trend seriously, I would exclude winners of arkles in the distant past (contraband). MWDS won’t run so you’re left with Newmill and VPU. Newmill doesn’t look the same horse these days so VPU must be a model for this. If only it were that simple!
Hi Manwiththeplan and welcome aboard. I didn’t see the ride, but thanks for the heads up.
No problem. I wouldn’t want to overstate it – looking at a replay this morning, he was driven quite hard to get into contention coming around the bend into the home straight. It was the last furlong when I thought he might have benefited from stronger handling.
I’ve no real expertise in the AW but I like to keep an eye on horses that consistently win when they drop to a mark. Nothing revolutionary in that I suppose and it’s obviously far easier said than done. I’ve been watching this thread and have been impressed by your (plural) approach to analysing races – where the speed is, how races are likely to develop etc. It strikes me that watching lots of AW racing is key – I don’t devote enough time to that. However, if I have any blinding flashes of inspiration, I’ll certainly post them here.
The Wragg horse in the last is of some interest because of the trainer’s undoubted quality.
I thought he was ridden very gingerly by Steve Drowne. He hung badly LTO and perhaps needed gentle handling but I’m not sure if I would have been too happy had I been on. He waved the whip a few times but otherwise it was largely a hands and heels job, to which there was no obvious response. Only beaten a neck too.
I hesitated to post this because moaning about jockeys is not really my form and it’s a bad way to introduce oneself but I suppose I have to start somewhere!
Edit – It’s a ‘she’ – the horse, not Steve Drowne.
