…which was added to by another four days following his Katchit win, I think. Tom Scudamore also got a couple of days’ holiday for his whip action on Osana.

Needless to say, this will open up the old winning-by-cheating debate. I’ve not had C4 on this afternoon, but hasn’t Big Mac already been blustering that the first two home in the Champion Hurdle should be disqualified? I’ve only heard the RUK take on his outpourings so far; specifically, Graham Cunningham denouncing them as "imbecillic".

I’d proffer that the first two pulled 5l clear of Punjabi, which to my mind is far enough ahead that both would still have been ahead even if the jockeys had whipped within the rules.

As long as none of the racing channels sees fit to nominate the rides as "Ride of the Week / Festival / etc." hereafter (as happened with Miko De Beauchene’s Welsh National win under Andrew Thornton, which to my mind looked far less edifying), I’m pretty comfortable with the treatment dished out to both horses and then subsequently both riders.

I wasn’t particularly impressed by Mr.Carberry’s effort in the last. He got the horse home, but it was an ugly performance from the last.

never in a hundred years will they ban the whip…..it’s got more uses than slapping a horse across the backside you know……………..ban the jockey by all means but if they never had them there would be more accidents than you could ever imagine…………you going to ban something, come up with an alternative……….love to here what it is

No alternative – by all means carry it if it is needed to lets say correct a veering horse, but using it for the purpose of making a horse run faster seems to be wrong because a) it puts jockeys who are prepared to break the rules at an unfair advantage and b) potentially injures/abuses the horse.

I guess if disqualification was also a penalty then maybe they would not use it excessively either?

    Totally agree

Not this old chestnut again  So no one would complain if it we had the same rules as America or Ireland and jockeys didn’t get banned?

The fact is the whip is very well controlled here, have what the looney McCririck wants and punters would stop betting on racing in their droves.

I would agree with graysonscolumn posting apart from him giving too much emphasis to ATR rides of the week judging by recent nominations and non nominations in that particular contest.

If you knew how much I had on Binocular today you would not expect any argument from me on that one.

Thing is if they did that the owner then suffers and that is wrong as he has no control over the situation. Ok he books the jockey or agrees to let him ride but that hold no water.

The stewards have their hand tied on that one unfortunatley. A better idea would to ban him from ridng in races over a certain value for a period of time and that would sort them out………he wouldn’t be so handy with the whip if it was possibly going to cost him from riding in the QMCC CHanpion Hurdle or someother big race eg.

In the main section of the forum there is a thread about a man who received a suspended sentence for smashing up a bookmakers in Ireland. This "punishment" was decried as being too lenient by most members.

To transfer the same logic to this argument, where is the punishment / deterrent in giving a 3-day ban in this situation?

I have yet to hear a convincing argument from the pro-whip protagonists.

Maybe that’s all the offence is worth, we’re only talking about minor whip offences here not reckless riding, the punishment has to fit the crime.

While we’re discussing whip bans, does anyone know how Davy russell avoided getting a holiday for knocking 7 shades out of New Alco?

I’ve posted on this subject before but today it seems real – Choc worked hard on Katchit but not excessively in our opinion – new whips are softer than the old type and we trust Choc to look after Katchit – disappointed with the decision to ban him!

A jockey who tries to win a race by excessive use of the whip should be disqualified. What is a 3/4 day ban, missing out on awful mid-week meetings, going to do to deter what we saw today?

    I mentioned that en passant, as it was the Thornton ride, and the subsequent lionising of it by some people on ATR (which, to his credit, Sean Boyce registered some discomfort over on this forum), which led to one of the last big threads we had on the subject matter;

There was the typical ‘ganging up’ on Big Mac this morning. Would anyone really expect anything else from Ted Walsh? The most pleasing thing for me was Francome’s acceptance that a trial period without the whip would be worth trying. Surprised me but if there is ever to be any serious movement on this issue it does need similar respected figures to support this idea.

Did he mention getting a few "tears" into the horse?
