Some folks keep saying “should of” and “would of” instead of “should have” and “would have”, and such like. Any more examples?
The erosion and desecration of the English language is both shameful and unforgivable, in my opinion, and I’m speaking as a foreigner whose mother tongue is pretty much diametrically opposite to English and other beautiful western languages.

The search function on the forum is indeed terrible, so a simple question to the forum management – why doesn’t it work and is there any chance of getting it fixed?
Yes, Al Boum Photo to emulate Kauto Star and regain the Cup for me too.
Missed the 12’s, sadly.
Best of luck to all.Yes, I agree with that thought.
I heard on WH radio shortly after the Champion that CH is 2/1 and H’suckle is 3/1 for next year’s Champion Hurdle.
Constitution Hill covered the 2 mile 87 yard trip 5.78 seconds faster in the Supreme than Honeysuckle did in the Champion. Same course, same ground conditions. By my reckoning, this equates to about 35 lengths! That’s 35 lengths!! And he did it hardly breaking sweat.
This means had CH run in the Champion today, he’d have almost certainly won it. I find this very interesting and can’t wait for Punchestown.
Almost the same story with me here, Moehat. My ‘uncle’ – well, he was only my dad’s business partner at the time, really – was the only gambling person in our chippy shop, and he was always going on about Arkle. It was Arkle this, Arkle that. Arkle, Arkle. Nothing but Arkle. And even my dad, who had very little English, failed to avoid getting into the bad habit of betting on the horses with him. And then, of course, regrettably I myself caught the bug and followed suit as soon as I was old enough…..Ha, ha…..
Many thanks for the link, apracing. The article is absolutely fabulous! It’s certainly filled in a lot of gaps in my knowledge.
I hadn’t realised Tant Pis had been running throughout the 1960’s and that he was already in his old age when I first noticed him in the late Sixties. It’s sad to learn of his demise on the racecourse, though.
A very remarkable decade that was in many many ways, imo.

As per my post above, how should “Crowley” in “Jim Crowley” be pronounced? What is the correct pronunciation?
Should Crowley be pronounced “Crow-ley” as in “a ‘crow’d of people”? Or should it be pronounced “Crow-ley” as in the black bird the “crow”?
If someone, such as Jim Crowley himself, could give me a definitive answer, then I would urge all commentators to take note.
Tip: In my own very humble opinion – and it is only my own very humble opinion – most commentators are getting it wrong!!
LOL

Talented dual-purpose jockey Jim Crowley seems (to me) to divide opinions in a funny sort of way – in the way his name is or should be pronounced, particularly by commentators in the racing media.
Should Crowley be pronounced “Crow-ley” as in “a ‘crow’d of people”? Or should it be pronounced “Crow-ley” as in the black bird the “crow”?
I don’t profess to know the answer. But I do seem to recall Jim was once asked the question in an interview on SSR. And I do know which one of the two different pronunciations I personally prefer!

I’m going for the year of Brigadier Gerard and Mill Reef – 1971.
Coincidently it’s been the Sprint Cup day today at Haydock. I recall, as a young school boy back then, that the Vernons Sprint Cup was one of the landmark races in the calendar, particularly after the exploits of Be Friendly a few years earlier.

The heart of Secretariat was found to weigh a massive 22 pounds approx! Given that the heart of a normal horse weighs about 8 or 9 pounds, maybe closer to 9, then it works out that Secretariat’s heart was about two and a half times as big! When I first read it I thought it was absolutely astonishing.
So over to you then, ERL. Very well done!
Btw, this for me leads to another question: Have they ever performed an autopsy like that on any other great horses to try find out what made them tick? I think they have preserved the skeleton of Eclipse, or something.

August 26, 2021 at 21:53 in reply to: Answer a question, ask another – Googlers will be sent to hell in a handcart! #1558204Thanks, LD73. Okay, here’s my question:
The American Triple Crown winner Secretariat was known to have a big heart. At what ratio, compared to that of a normal horse, was his heart actually found to be when he was put down due to chronic illness at the age of 19? A good approximate figure will do. GL.

How about it, LD73 ?I would vote for this idea.
A six-race programme is too short for me.
