Balanchine won the Irish Derby but I aint got a clue what she’d look like.

Like the picture Nathan. Well done.

Sorry Joni, the Derby bit was an intentional red herring. :D

"Even presuming your ten million is correct, within a population of 60 million it is a minority"

According to sources on the net the percentage of regular church goers is somewhere between 14 and 2o % of the Uk population. That equates to at least 8.5 million people. In a population of 60 million people that isn’t a minority in my book (Unless we’re talking about the literal meaning of the word.)

Literal or otherwise by any sensible interpretation would say 20% is a minority

"People can believe in any mythical superstition they wish – however they do not have any rights to impose their beliefs on others who do not share those beliefs."

Who is suggesting that they do? My point was that racing should reconsider the idea of racing on a prominent religious date. That hardly equates to having anything imposed on racing by anyone else.

Of course it does by not doing something because it coincides with a religious festival is effectively imposing the so called importance of that festival on those who do not believe in it.

It’s simple – race on Good Friday and if Christians do not want to go racing nobody is forcing them – they have a choice.

By banning racing on Good Friday those who do not believe in the Christian myth are not being given the choice to go racing.

Ergo the beliefs of the 20% minority are being imposed on the 80% majority.

Of course it isn’t. If racing chooses to not have racing on Good Friday in deference to other people’s beliefs how on earth is that one faction imposing its will on another?

As for your ridiculous diatribe about working ten consecutive days etc there speaks someone who has clearly never done a real days work in his life! I’d like to see you hack my job for ten days on the trot!

There are two distinct issues here.

Firstly not to race on Good Friday, a public holiday, is absolutely ridiculous – it’s a day which would attract good crowds and the basis of not racing on that day – i.e. it’s a religious festival for a minority – is frankly farcical.

Yes there is too much racing and no amount of money will make artificial surface racing interesting.

What is required is a drastic reduction in the fixture list and by all means introduce blank days for racing – but make those the quiet Monday’s when courses are likely to attract only a couple of hundred patrons – not a public holiday where it is likely thousands would attend.

Instead of having a token blank day on Good Friday why not have 20 blank Mondays, November through to March? (the only exception being a Monday between Christmas and New Year)

Upwards of ten million people is hardly a minority though is it Paul?

Let’s hope the rest of the UK’s population don’t adopt a similar dismissive attitude to the ‘minority’ that attend horse race meetings if ever push comes to shove for our sport eh?

I have no interest in religion myself – other than when it suits me- however I do respect those people who do have a strong faith. Surely one or two days a year isn’t such a great sacrifice to make in order to show some respect for other people’s beliefs is it? :?

I have to agree with Joni. There seem to have been several instances of trainers misjudging the potential or current well being of their horses this season. That is surely what set the genius of Sir Henry aside from the average flat trainer, the ability to understand where his horses were at and their potential and preferences?

I can’t see any merit in the scatter gun approach of some prominent trainers. It has sod all to do with derring-do and everything to do with greed and a shortfall in training skills IMO.

Are you attending the service in Ely on the 16th Joni? I’ve booked the day off work to go and pay my respects to the great man.

Far be it for me to interrupt the daily

‘Joni & Hammy Cecil / Frankel Love-in (TM)’

, but are you seriously suggesting the likes of Aiden O’Brien and Jim Bolger are "greedy" and have a "shortfall in training skills"?

Come on down lads, Planet Earth beckons.

What I was suggesting, and I stand by, is that Sir Henry was a far more skilled trainer than either of those and several others, which his treatment of Frankel aptly demonstrated. And yes, IMO greed is the driving force. Greed for both money and notoriety.

PS You won’t interrupt my admiration of Sir Henry. My adulation knows no bounds and your opinion of him and the Frankel situation means less than nothing to me.

Blimey Steve bit of an over reaction there aint it mate. :?

I for one would miss your input and your informed race appraisals. I’ve got you in the top three or four racing experts posting on here. You clearly know your stuff. Hopefully you’ll rethink your hasty request and get back to shooting us clueless posters down whenever we put our feet in our mouths. :D

I’d like also though to give Ginge my support. He has a sometimes bewildering approach to betting but, as with Steve, he obviously knows a horse’s ears from its tail. More importantly though I frequently find myself mightily impressed by his refusal to be drawn into posting spiteful retorts to others even when being insulted and ridiculed himself. I’ve been posting for a couple of years now and I can’t recall ever seeing him say anything particularly nasty to anyone. He’s not only a good judge of horseflesh but also IMO A thoroughly nice chap.

Time to shake those metaphorical hands and move on chaps.

Bet the old Devil’s Dyke was packed Hammy hope Meat Loaf delivered, my daughter’s boyfriend saw him earlier this year and said his voice was going (maybe he just had a cold).
Not much more racing left on the July Course for this year back to the Rowley Mile next month, how the year flys by
    Jac

Sorry to say Jac that it has to rate as the worst live performance from a big act that I’ve ever seen. Nothing short of diabolical! You know someone stinks when people who haven’t paid are leaving early. :D

(BTW I had the option of a free ticket but prefer watching from the Dyke.)

On a positive note one of John Gosden’s horses ‘Nautilus’ put in a helluva shift in the penultimate race, winning by fifteen lengths!

It’s covered on the Newmarket racecourse website:

    Summer Saturday’s Live – Saturday 9th June & Saturday 25th August

    Rob

Rob that’s really good info re the Courtesy bus.

    Just to point out that
Summer Saturday’s Live next event is actually

    Saturday 24th August

    – McFly will be playing after racing

    Jac
    :D

Meatloaf is here on Friday night. I’ll be taking my place in the cheap seats on the dyke. :)

    …can’t wait! 8)

Isn’t it just likely that the horse has simply ‘gone over’ now?

He’s run creditably in every race barring the Derby, but speaking personally I had thought him perhaps a slightly better horse than he probably is following a sterling performance in the 2,000. A very good horse but clearly flawed too.

War Command came from last to 1st in the Coventry maybe the way the race panned out suited or fall into his lap, be interesting to see the sectionals maybe the early pace took it out of those at the head of the field. War Command was not 1st string for that race so although probably a very good horse was probably overrated by the visual impression.

Speaking as one of those who took a chance and lumped on him for next year’s Guineas I have to say I think you are correct Nathan. The form of the Coventry has not plotted out too well and I’ll be surprised and more than a little chuffed if he even runs in the race now.

… as our learned friend would say:

this slip is not looking like one to tuck under the lucky clown I’m afraid. :(

The Coventry is proving a flop if you ask me.And nobody did.

How do you think the form of the Coventry has worked out Andy? :D

I’ve been listening to The Dreaming recently [was played on Radio 6 a few weeks back and got me listening to it again]. Very underrated and ahead of it’s time, wasn’t it?

Probably my favourite of her albums. I loved it from the word go. Music critics of the day accused her of ‘over producing’ the album. My favourite track from the album was the Jack Nicholas inspired ‘Get Out Of my House’

Currently (It changes all the time.) my favourite KB track is probably ‘Hello Earth’.

… or is it ‘Blow Away’? :?

    :D :D :D
