From what i recall, Kauto was hesitant as soon as the second fence. I don’t know what that is. Maybe he doesn’t grip as well on ground that’s a bit softer, or maybe he just had an off day ?

I don’t have the worst of experiences with them either, but i don’t want to have a ‘i’m alright Jack’ attitude, not that i’m implying you have. Today for example, there’s an article in the online RP about Aidan O’Brien’s horses, yet we have comments from a Ladbrokes spokesman on the horses, before Aidan O’Brien himself. They just have such a grip on the game. I’ve already mentioned the grip they have on Channel 4, ATR and the RP. The game is just suffocated by their advertisements, comments, interviews and general air time. I also think the bookies would use younger peoples interest in racing to get them hooked on FOBT’s. One firm send me e-mails about them on a regular basis, even though i only opted for sport offer e-mails, i can’t help but feel that someone around 18-21 would have bet on a few quid on them because of the free incentives on them.

Graeme, its really simple. Who is going to follow horse racing in this country in 2050 if we don’t get young people to the races/in the bookmakers?

I see your point a little, but then, to a Temperance Methodist, we’re all a bunch of degenerate gamblers. If you like horse racing, punting is part of the deal. I take my son racing btw and he’ll go anywhere except Market Rasen, which is full of scary redneck psycho kids, according to him. No moral issues with taking him either. I’d do school presentations and roadshows. There’s that maths teacher isn’t there, who taught probabilities using the Sporting Life. I might have been better at maths if I had him as my teach.

I think there’s more than enough young people betting, without the need to press the emergency button for more. In fact, has it ever been more popular from a gambling point of view, in terms of money wagered ? adverts are all over the place, and the plonkers are never off the t.v these days.

I wouldn’t encourage anyone to bet. I think peoples finances are more important that my enjoyment of horse racing. Why in gods name would i want people to throw money on racing, when they can actually get their accounts closed when they aren’t even in profit ?

Here’s what you younger gamblers would be getting for their buck :-

Bookies who move to a tax free rocks to avoid paying tax rates. The same people who contribute an absolute pittance to prize funds.

Firms who close peoples accounts, win or lose when it suits them. Yes that’s right, they even close accounts on people who they suspect have enough money to chase loses. Although if you are rich and famous, you can have any amount you wish sir.

Ignorant trainers who with hold information, or mumble ‘we hope it can run well’.

Not being told if a horse if tuned up to run a good race, or whether it’s being run for a nice handicap mark.

Not being updated on injuries, which gives them a unique opportunity of losing ante post money for a horse that will never run.

    Connections/trainers laying their own horses.

Until the book makers strangle hold loosens, then i wouldn’t dream of introducing anyone to racing, quite the opposite in fact. Chanel 4 had days of them rubbing it in and treating punters like nethanderals.

Graeme, if you don’t get young people enthused by horse racing then the sport will die. As simple as that.

Do you want that to happen?

In fifty years time, when most of us here are in racing heaven, if we don’t replace ourselves, the sport worldwide will return to its limited, regal, aristocratic origins. I don’t want that to happen. Why should the rich have exclusive access to racing horses? You sound like you experienced the type of Cheltenham that I had last year.

It wouldn’t die. If less younger people come into horse racing, it would make people buck their ideas up a bit i.e bookies and trainers, who can afford to mess people about at this moment in time, without much reprocussion. I didn’t have a bad Cheltenham either, i try to maintain the same opinion whether i’m winning or losing. Would you encourage any youngsters in your family to gamble away until their heart is content, just to keep horse racing alive in this current climate ?

Why are people so keen to get the younger generation to give corrupt bookmakers their money. It’s almost as if you all want a generation of degenerate gamblers who make the penny pinchers a few more quid. Horse racing isn’t any use for younger people in this day and age. The bookies have shareholders, therefore some of the prices are a scandel, and many punters get treated with utter contempt. They will give Mr A.Millionaire or Mr A.Celebrity a 50 grand bet no problem, but if someone with barely two bob to rub together gets a bit of luck and wins a couple of grand, they will ban him and reduce him to fiver bets maximum, at starting prices. My advice would be to keep your money in your pocket, and spend it on yourself. It takes a very long time to suss the game out, by which time you might have drowned in a pool of shambolic prices, commercial gimics and a lack of trainer comments.

Should be a great competitive game. I’m surprised St Mirren sold out their allocation so quickly. St Mirren have a good chance, seeing as they’ve spent about £10m this season on quality players. Given that they have a team full of internationalists, i expect the Paisley toe pokers to win with ease. It’s worth it just for the singing alone, as we all love to hear classical renditions of Mozart’s symphony number forty from the Govan orchestra. Why would the nuetrals want to watch Man Utd v Liverpool, when they have all this ?

I suppose you could call it that. Then again you’d have to call Craig Levein, Jim Gannon and Gus MacPherson ‘paranoid’ as well.

    Cheltenham after thought :-

I’m lucky to still be floating above water, infact due to on the day betting i made a profit, and ive thoroughly enjoyed the festival, which as been the roller coaster of all roller coasters. In terms of ante posts i got

    Sizing Europe

    8/1(£270),

    Binocular

    8/1(£675) and a

    Bincoular & Big Bucks double

15/1(£812). I was waiting on Kauto to complete a nice treble, but it didn’t materialise, like one or two other bets.

Other ones i got which weren’t ante post such as a single on

    Quevega

13/8, and good enough bets on

    Sanctuaire

    £60 @ 9/2,

    Weapons Amnesty

    £30 @ 10/1 and

    Big Zeb

    £60 @ 10/1.

Peddlers Cross and Soldatino came up, but unfortunately they were part of doubles that never came happened.

A tough day hasn’t been boosted by the news that Steinbeck will miss the 2000 guineas, but i’ve wiped out all the debt on this thread, and more, with one or two other bets still to run. Punchestown and Aintee have still to come up, so i can’t really be bothered listening to O’Brien mumble about flat racing horses.

I will take my foot off the gas a little, and let one or two bets ride out, unless there’s a half decent opportunity. ‘On Borrowed Wings’ will be my last bet of the festival, an outside odds.

good fun, and more importantly a lesson or two learned.

I was pretty speechless. Great run from Imperial Commander, that humble pie is choking me.

He was always travelling well, and after Kauto went the writing was on the wall. I’m pleased for trainer and jockey, they deserve it.

I’d side with Soldatino. I think Pittoni is a good horse, but it’s a concern that Russel would opt for Carlito Brigante instead. Steve Melish said after Soldatino’s last race that it’s not good enough for a Triumph, but it’s hardly a top renewal. Ok the opposition wasn’t much use, either was the ground, but he picked up well and BG didn’t have to use the whip. I thought Super Kenny would have been coming here, and i don’t believe they ran out of time with him, so if they prefer Soldatino here he has to has a good chance. Advisor looks good as well, although to say he’s the best Nicholl’s horse for this race might not being saying much, that’s the only negative at this moment.

In an ideal world he’d put the horses before himself, but it’s the last day. Look what happened with Choc Thornton last festival.

I wouldn’t pay too much attention to the Racing Post poll. Infact, they can take it and shove it up their arse. McRirick is better to listen to than any of the people who work for that rag will ever be. Yeah, sometimes he goes a bit over the top, but people who are used to him know a lot of it is in your face banter, with no malice. The problem is with the sensitive souls who get offended by the least of things in life. I say good on McRirick, the guy is top notch because even though he has gotten on in age, his attitude and nuttiness has remained. I’d be worried if he went quiet. If you take him away from racing, where is the character ?

Make sure we don’t share the same high street, because i think

    Tidal Bay

    will turn BB over.

    TURN HIM LOOSE!!

If Big Buck’s gets turned over, what price Kauto Star for tomorrow?

Not a great deal better than the 8/11 you can get just now, as punters are following the same route with regards to anticipating a bigger price, and the bookies are on top of it. One firm might get naughty for about 10 mins and go 10/11, for pubclity.
