Great run by the winner, and I am especially pleased that Twist Magic did so well, giving so much weight away.

My regular fiver went on Somersby, but you can’t have everything!

This may be the kiss of death…but here goes.

Looking at both the form lines and the overall trends, Deep Purple stands out. He has finished ahead of better horses on a more consistent basis than his rivals, he’s a course and distance winner, it seems as if he’s been prepared for this race and – providing his blood vessels hold out – he looks the most likely winner.

Apologies in advance to his connections!

    Who will you back?

IMO – I will go for Kauto and WAF on each way

The King won’t run, obviously, and I can’t see WAF going for the Hennessy a week after the Betfair.

Can’t really see past Denman, although there are a few entries that could just about be worth an each-way punt.

I’d be very careful concerning Weird Al. His trainer doesn’t want to run him if it looks like a hot contest so he will go for the 20k Colin Parker Memorial Chase at Carlisle on Sunday a race both Tidal Bay and Knockara Beau have won in the past. Either one of them or both could end up going there as well if the ground doesn’t ease.

That’s why I’m waiting until Friday before I put any money down!

Duc De Regniere runs in the John Smith’s Hurdle on the same card.

    Is this confirmed?

    What about Weird Al?

As it stands, I would say he’s the main threat to Deep Purple…it’s the age-old conundrum – go for the horse that’s been there, done that, but maybe isn’t quite what he was, or could be, or go for the up-and-coming youngster who might just be unproven at this level.

As it stands, with Weird Al likely not to run, Duc de Regniere and Deep Purple are the two I’m looking at.

DP won last year, which is a big positive, obviously. However, one could be forgiven for thinking that he’s really a two-and-a-half mile horse, and there’s the possibility that last year’s success – his only win over more than 2m5f – was a bit of a fluke. He’ll be carrying five pounds more, too. On the other hand, his trainer’s had a very good record in the race recently, and I have a suspicion that this is the horse’s main target.

DdR fits a lot of the trends, and is definitely one to look out for. However, if we take a look at his last season, it seems as if his connections aren’t entirely certain whether he’s a hurdler or a chaser. However, his record in chases is four from six (compared to DPs six from 13) and, as Fist says, the predicted good ground will help him. He also looks to be a horse that’ll go well on longer trips, and is certainly one to bear in mind.

I shall make my final decision after the final declaration on Friday!

    What do you think?

I don’t think I ever bet on him, but I always, always considered him a danger to whoever I was on.

Hope he has a long, successful, and productive stud career.

Very tough race to access….I want to rule Master of Hounds out…purely on his breeding

Out of curiosity, why would you say that? What’s in his pedigree you don’t like?

Master of Hounds fits most of the trends, was very close to Dunboyne Express and allowed Roddy O to get too much of an easy lead, 14s with Ladbrokes has got my e/w fiver!

I think this is a race where we have to see who will come second to The King.

I have a really good feeling about Kempes – he can do 3m and upwards, and his win at Punchestown gave me the feeling he’d prefer going left handed*. A seriously underrated horse, IMHO.

*I have, of course, realised this particular course is right handed.

Oh well! I still like the look of Kempes for second!

I didn’t bet on this one, just treated it as one to savour.

Suffice to say, if he can keep improving, he will be a total beast of a horse

Very, very impressed by Roddy O, though – I reckon he’ll be there or thereabouts next year.

True, and on a good day, with the pieces fulling the right way…who knows? He’s still young, anyway, so anything could happen.

I like the look of The Last Derby, if he runs the race that’s in him, he’ll be a big threat.

    Looks a nice race.

Will be interesting to see what price Sizing Europe is sent off at, after all he is being sent into ‘unknown territory’ so to speak in relation to the trip.

Im not so sure, personally, he will get it. There are plenty who say he will get the trip, but im not so sure.

Will make for a very interesting race.

I think this is one where we wait for the prices…should be interesting.
