Hywell Davies was softly unseated on spartan missile 83 friendly henry 89 uncle merlin 90 and blue dart in 91 not one to rely on .
Also like the look of Palypso ,the owners are due as Longshanks had such bad luck at even getting in the race.
You can send the men in white coats round if you like but i have a fancy for Bible Lord not the best jumper LOL but there is a big chase in this fella .
Interesting to note Mark Grant back on board at Wetherby tomorrow.
Big disappointments for me were Cardinal Red and Malford Lad ,i was convinced that both had a 3m hurdle in them at the festival …and at big price…but alas
As well as Draborgie i seem to remember the Mercers lost Mack the knife in the champion hurdle the same day .
Monaughty Man.
gc
Lol, mind you i did back him in the 95 aintree foxhunters ,was one of Ted Caine`s better ones
Good jockeys can win races without resorting to the whip.
I remember Tom Grantham winning on Barge Boy in a big handicap hurdle without hitting him once …a joy to watch.I remember Sir Peter commenting about it too at the time .
A sad but perhaps fitting end to a splendid horse who always did his best .
Sorry to go off topic but whats the news on Iron Man ?Roddy.
Also liked the look of that one you had running on Welsh National day ,a nice stayer in the making?Nice to know he`s still around, remember him putting in the most extraordinary round of jumping or should i say non jumping in the national a few years back.
At the moment i`m leaning towards Knowhere seems to quite like the place tho` failed to finish in the last two nationals.
Ollie Magern has to my mind been staying on a bit at the end of his races and could run a lot of these into the ground if allowed to bowl along.
Zabenz was running well two years ago til leather broke alright i know it was only five fences but ran well in `whitbread` or whatever its called these days later on, only hope he doesn`t make a mistake like he did then tho`.
If there is rain which i doubt i could see Eurotrek becoming the first thirteen year old to get a place since General Symons .
And if he gets in would love to see Iron Man make up for the unluckiest loser in recent times (Ballycassidy).
Bear in mind i haven`t had a placed horse since Over the Deel in 95 but hope springs eternal eh ?

If l’Ami wins this I’ll pack the game in- horses that flop in a National don’t come back to win it. My guess is it’s some ill-informed tipping line inspired plunge, combined with people thinking JP is on and following the money. Would like a bit of 4/6 that AP will ride Butler’s Cabin who has a much better chance.
The majority of GN winners have won at their first attempt but Highland Wedding,Rag Trade,Little Polveir and Hedgehunter to name but four all won after "flopping" in previous years so you can never be certain.
Hedgehunter in particular looked as though four and a half miles was beyond him when he fell at the last in 04I think the whole 2 1/2miler theory is based almost solely on Gay Trip (1970) – unless you count Red Marauder (who I believe had previously won over no further then 2 1/2miles), but 2001 was a freak year
oh i don`t know what about Classified and The tsarevich not winners i admit but two and a half milers who ran well i`m sure there is others if i can get my old brain into gear.
Classified was definitely a 2 1/2 miler which is why he conked out at the crucial stage and he didn’t win. Gay Trip was by Vulgan who by then had already sired two Grand National winners so to say Gay Trip was 2 1/2 miler was, at the time, and still is failing to tell the full story. A also hark back to A Piece Of Cake, a favourite horse of mine who was almost exclusively campaigned over 2m 4f, successfully so, but his pedigree screamed stamina (Roselier gelding out of a Boreen mare) so when he ran over 4m in the Borders National I lumped on. The fact he won so much over shorter proved what a good horse he was but he was always going to be a stayer.
Only just missed out of a place in the real national a few years ago i seem to remember.

does anyone who the defectors are?
Cheers
When I went to the bookies to put my money on I got talking [as you do] to a chap who saw Sam TD on Irish Raptor yesterday and said his riding was dreadful; I thought my money was lost today, but he gave his horse a superb ride…..[my logic being that his dad wouldn’t put him up on a horse that couldn’t jump]…certainly looking forward to seeing Cappa Bleu again; must thank people on the forum because up until now I’ve watched these races in complete ignorance, but a little bit of knowledge makes such a difference…roll on Aintree and Ballycassidy! you know you can do it…..
Id like to think that justice will prevail and Ballycassidy wins the foxhunters ,my money will be on but that last time he ran there in the Becher i got the impression he was sick and tired of the place.
Hope springs though eh?
I believe that Pat O’Connor (if it’s the same one I’m thinking of ~ trained and rode Three Of Diamonds? ) suffered badly from bi-polar disorder and had to leave the game. I read at one stage that he was working for the BBC in Leicester as a commentator or analyst, but that’s a few years ago.
yes thats the one i`m thinking of he also road O` er the border in the 83 national ,had a hatful of entries for the 84 National then seemed to disappear .
To me when i was younger him ,John Carden, Aiden `suntan` O`connell et al were what the national was all about .
But i might possibly have a different view as i`v got older if their types were still around i`m not sure.
