I dont think they can be translated, as the names generally have no meaning in French either.
Totally agree. Same goes for Irish names. But I wouldn’t say its much of an issue in that case though. Jim Bolger comes to mind with a few Irish names, but theres not too many I think.
The French names thing is on the increase though.
A simpler solution would be to continue to buy French horses for NH racing in Ireland and the UK, then give them English names that the majority of us racing fans can relate to.
Suny Bay, Viking Flagship, Moscow Flyer
or
Faceur Du Large, Espson Du Houx, Eleazar Des Neiges.
The former imo.
Thanks AP.
There are links to all the details your looking for at the bottom of this page, Chestnut.
The edit button doesn’t seem to be working this morning, which is something I have the need for on a regular basis.
Very enjoyable read AP.
I spent many an afternoon of my teenage years in the mid to late eighties in the local bookies watching the racing, then college and career took took over from coincidentally 1990 onwards, and I lost contact with the sport on a day to day basis, until I had the time and money to reconnect with it again in my early thirties. But I do recognize plenty of the names you’ve mentioned here, I never missed a Cheltenham! It goes to show just what an important showcase for the sport, The Festival has always been I think.
Slightly off kilter, regarding the availability of boxes and the pre-race “schedule” of a horse at the racecourse. I noticed when Altior ran the last day at Ascot, The Opening Show showed him arriving at the course and been led from the horsebox at about 10am, some four hours before off time. Seems very early to be there, in my very uneducated view, particularly considering Henderson’s isn’t that far of a journey from Lambourn.
Anyone know just what a horse does for four hours beyond just standing there?

1990 Then and Now
David Elsworth had runners in both the Epsom Derby and Cheltenham Gold Cup that year. Cant be too many other trainers with that claim to fame from any era I’d imagine.
No hesitation at all, Frankel’s Guineas.
Astonishing. Will live with me forever.
Love this series Simon, always look forward to the next one.
One small bit of constructive input….Would prefer it if you spent more time covering the present with the pro punters, too much time devoted to the back-story imo.
“Heard was suspended for 10 days for failing to ride his mount in such a way that he could be seen to ask for real or substantial effort to obtain the best possible placing.”
Absolutely inexplicable then, that the horse can have its mark lowered on the back of that run.
I would LOVE to know the process/logic at the BHA that allowed this to happen. I did email Dominic Gardiner Hill about it, but never received a reply.
Nonsense like this just gives racing a bad name, and the BHA really should be doing a lot better.
“A cheats charter”, Sir Henry once called the handicap system. In cases such as this, you wouldn’t disagree with him.
Fully behind the Khadija Mellah project, although it seemed for a while there she wasn’t allowed any TV exposure whatsoever, without having Oli Bell glued onto her. A huge smack of reflected glory from the thing.
And the first chance ITV get to provide a follow through, to make an on-going tangible contribution to diversity in racing in their broadcasts, what do they do…revert to type. Surely this was a perfect opportunity to give a kid(s) of color, or from a less advantaged background, a leg up in the racing media, perhaps to provide some role models for other kids in similar situations. But no, they put five Billie Barry kids up instead.
You’ll have to do better than that ITV Racing, otherwise it’s mostly just lip service.
It is quiet, but we’re all to blame for that I suppose.
Interesting ones for me at the moment…
-Sandown bans…look forward to the report from the appeals panel
-Handicapper dropping Little Rory Mac by 2lbs despite jockey getting banned for 10 days for not trying hard enough in the same race…
-Diversty in racing – ITV bang on enough about it, but the new “mini-me’s” are 5 white kids, 4 with middle class accents, 1 girl…
Good to see Ginger posting again
