While many 6/4 shots aren’t worth the price some are more than value for it. Had it not been for the big hoodoo in midweek about the ground being to soft DT would have been odds on almost certainly. Therefore having seen the first on saturday and satisfied the ground was quick enough I thought the odds were a gift.

Undoubtedly there are some 6/4 shots (more than arent in all probability) which are a quick way to lose money, some though are not. Take Kauto Star in the GC for example, it was basically take short odds that he manages to stand up.

Flash my post was not meant to criticise the idea of Scorpion making the running, I think that was the right thing to do, my point was that he didnt go fast enough. It looked to me a steady gallop rather than a particularly strong one.

What I was trying to say was the slower the initial pace was the better for DT so the Scorpion as a pacemaker argument holds no weight in my hmble opinion. Sorry to confuse you flash I fear I may still be expressing myself in not the clearest manner.

Its been mentioned above but I thought I’d throw my two cents in. Dylan Thomas has the acceleration and speed to win, or compete in any Group 1 over 10f. Therefore a slow run 12f would have suited him more so than anything else in the race who were more of the staying type than those wanting a sprint.

Secondly Scorpion would not have been served any better by sitting off what looked like a fairly slow pace to me. The fact that he took up the running doesnt mean he was pacemaking. If anything he didnt go fast enough to give himself a real chance in my opinion.

You say racing is big than an individual but in truth it is bigger than a nation. thats the problem with britain, when change appears on the horizon we pine over days past when we were more important.

like it or not the arc is now far more important for 3 year olds than the KG. it may or may not damage horses but most owners now just don’t want to risk it! and why should they!

Flash I can understand your frustration about the lack of a top king george but think of it from another angle. If the field was identical but with authorized in it and he won, what would it prove? very little is what it would prove. Everyone would whine that he hadnt beat anything of note and he still had to prove himself. Conversly if he was beaten he would be written off completely.

I wouldnt race him, so called "prestige" of the KG or otherwise!

Flash you use Kauto Star as an example. He raced in 5 races in a jumps season. If Authorized takes in another 10f race then the Arc he will also have 5 races.

will you explain to me why its different? there are just more targets on the flat.

yes, and the reason being it would serve absolutely no purpose in terms of stud value for him to race there, winner of the Eclipse or otherwise. Rightly or wrongly it is far more useful in terms of commercial value to chase prizes at 10f. I happen to think wrongly as Montjeu and Galileo are prime examples of what proper 12f horses can deliver at stud, but thats not the fashion.

imo if he’d won the eclipse he wouldnt have been seen again until longchamp.

    Flash,

I can’t agree with you on the he’s had 1 hard race. Regardless of the fact that no-one really challenged him in the derby it still takes 99% of the effort to win like that as if someone had challenged him.

sure he quickened and went away from them and it looked easy, but frankie rode him just about to the line and it is the effort of quickening that uses the majority a horses energy up, not the little bit more he’d of needed if something had got near him.

Think of it like this, a sprinter in the olympics runs a quick time and wins easily in his heat, in the semi-final he runs the 0.1 of a second quicker but wins narrowly, does the second one take a massive amount more effort?

Actually yes on a rethink you are right it is not something they appear to do. I’ve never really thought about it as such but it is just subconcious thing from reading it so often. Thank you for your corrections.

I’d agree with the lower class races part. my question is if he is a stayer why put him in the eclipse? ok you have a bash at the derby just in case but why then step him back in trip? from what I’ve seen of him he doesnt look like he wants a lot further just that he isn’t good enough for pattern races on the whole.

I could be wrong I guess, I was just interested to see what other peoples thoughts. Its a good point re. debut, just seems to have been oddly campaigned to me. Its like the precise opposite to what they do with their best horses, instead of hiding them to maintain the hype they are just racing him here there and everywhere in the hope he flukes a black type win.

Yeah but O’Brien said today the plan is to run him at Goodwood in the Ledger trial.

I think Aidan has played it pretty smart, on good or faster I think DT would have walked it while on soft or worse Scorpian should win in my opinion. Meanwhile the potential gain in running SoF in such a weak field is very little compared with the downside if he lost.

Many, myself included, resent the way horses are campaigned in such a commercial manner. That said I cant blame O’Brien for doing his job.

Venusian with greatest respect please read my post again. I would agree with you abiliy is the biggest factor. My point was that having achieved what he has isnt a guarentee of instnt success commercially as a broodmare. the point about the pedigreeis aditional to that, not the thrust of my argument.

    P.S. sorry for misspelling achieved

    aaftershock,
I take your point and one of the attractions of NH for me is the increased ability to "support" a horse in the non-punting sense. However with regards Turbo Linn it was my impression the trainer was reffering to the Ascot Gold Cup not the cheltenham 1. I dont think this horse has yet achieed enough to be an instant broodmare prospect given her pedigree.

aaftershock if the reasoning of sharpening up a NH horse on the flat to prepare for jumps prizes is acceptable how can it not be the other way round? your argument is not only flawed you have answered your own question.

I assume from your post you are more of a NH fan, which is great everyone has their own preference, but that does not make it superior, morally or otherwise. Personally I love both codes and if racing in both is whats best for a horse then good luck to it. if she is entered in a race she has every right to be there and win.
