Weirdly enough I was speaking to someone about this a few weeks back, and as it was a passing conversation and one that I didn’t think would bear any meaning, I can’t for certain remember the answer, but I’m pretty sure I was told 4 races meant the course aren’t required to give refunds.
Random thing I noticed this week – Nick Luck is incredibly hard working and always seemed to be the first presenter on the course, he’d often be in restaurants/bars/the stands at 9am taking phone calls and keeping himself busy, one day I saw him sat in a restaurant on his laptop at about 9.30am recording his podcast with Lydia Hislop. The other tv folk seemed to just swan about the parade ring when they were required to, whereas Nick seemed like he genuinely loved being around the place. I should note that both him and Rishi seemed particularly popular amongst those in the sport.
Met the forums friend Richard Hoiles too on Tuesday and he couldn’t have been friendlier.
Your very welcome Ian!
Just been reading online peoples thoughts of it all lol
Well done to those that found the winner! Was stood right by the finishing line for the race, backed the favourite about 10mins before the off, but about 5mins before the off the track became a monsoon, crazy rain, genuinely think the fav threw the towel in, the rain actually got substantially harder when they had about 4f left to run. I could just be talking through my pocket as the fav could well have just gotten tired after having so much ground to make up being held up at the back throughout the race. They reeled in the front runner in the race before (which I’d backed, typically) and maybe Frankie misjudged it and assumed they’d be able to do the same again. Gosden had a long chat with Frankie and Atzeni on the way from the parade ring to the track, presumably talking tactics, they would have had no way of knowing the amount of rain that was about to hit the track.
Rain has stopped
For sure Ian, miserable weather today, rain hasn’t stopped, can’t even see across the course now, I’d bet it’ll be soft by the first could be boarding on heavy half way through the card
Saw them walking the track when I got to the car park at 6.50 this morning, I did not envy grounds or the clerk at all, really miserable weather, the rain has turned back to drizzle now and has been this way for around 30mins
It’s my pleasure Ian! My boss actually just gave me a bottle of whispering angel to thank me for my hard work this week, so with hers and your compliments I’ve got a spring in my step

It’s started raining heavier now, none of that light drizzle stuff
Sorry I got it wrong yesturday! I guess that’d what happens when i don’t go straight to the source! No reading I’m afraid but a lady who walked the track just now said good to soft, soft in places. It’s raining lightly here atm with rain forecast all day, wouldn’t be surprised if it was soft by the first race
Ah ok Ian, I’ve never looked into the numerical readings and assumed the higher the number the softer the ground but I guess it’s the opposite! 6.9 it will have been then.
Maybe they meant 5.9? As it hasn’t rained here in about 24 hours (or more), or does the amount of racing on the ground have that much of an impact on the reading?
😂😂😂 sorry folks I was so busy yesturday I didn’t get a chance to stop! I overheard a conversation just now, 6.9 reading good to soft soft in places. Though don’t take that as gospel as I haven’t been told directly myself.
Been raining here for an hour or so now, not torrential but consistent enough to affect the ground especially if it continues or rains harder any time soon, the wind is currently surprisingly low though, feels like 10mph (ish) with some slightly stronger gusts but wouldn’t have thought it will have any effect on the racing in its current form.
Indeeed Ian! Apologies for not getting a proper going in this morning, been super busy and haven’t bumped into the clerk yet, the wind as well as the rain is actually less than I was expecting, I’m no good judge of wind but I’d say it feels more like 15-20mph than the 30-40mph forecast, a few ominous looking clouds about and there’s rain coming from them, fortunately it’s just north of the track though so the racecourse has just managed to miss all of this mornings rain so far.
Rained most of the night, stopped now, incredibly windy already west to east
Cheers, yeah I couldn’t think of a time where it’d happened before and actually a little surprised it hasn’t happened more often come to think of it. Hopefully tomorrow’s nice and safe though!
Do they ever cancel fixtures because of the wind? With all of the loose objects like benches/tables and all of the temporary structures like marquees and gazebos, it could become a little dangerous if the forecast is correct and we get wind gusts between 40-50mph. It’s not something I would have thought about, but they cancelled a day of the Goodwood Festival of Speed a couple of weeks ago for that exact reason. To be honest I hadn’t realised the forecast was quite so bad until this evening otherwise I would have asked about it today.
