Thanks for the enthusiastic entries. Opening day’s tally’s to come soon.
In the name of fairplay, we’ll agree to a rule by where should your horse be declared but come out on the day 3pts will be awarded to negate the inability to score points through finishing position
I’m hoping this is a wind-up. Surely?
If it happens this will be so ridiculous. Ok, so we know some outside soprtsmen know a bit about racing (Parrott) but you wouldn’t have Big Mac presenting the darts…..ok, bad example.
Stop all this incestuous presenter swapping. Pointless.
Havent tried that game, Irish Stamp. Will definitely have a gander.
And thanks for supporting ‘our friends at Strategic Designs’,OneEye(!)
The competition will be a bit of fun and will keep interest going for the week, with a nice little prize to win at the end. For anyone who hasn’t played it, it’s well worth the £20!
A TRF league would be great fun, and we’ll definitely have to put a bit of thought into it and who knows
No wonder they all looked so happy!
If anyone’s wondering, we have some great Q&A guests lined up for the coming months.
(Order subject to change)
Phil Smith
Harry Herbert
Darryll Holland
Matt Chapman
Jim Crowley
Steve DrowneAny suggestions and I’ll try my best?
Harry Herbert is doing a Q&A for us in the very near future so you’ll be able to ask him, Cav
I didn’t know Alan Titchmarsh was a TRF user :p
Cheers for all the questions guys, I know Bill has been keeping an eye on this thread so I’m sure he’ll do his best to answer all your questions.
I’ll leave this thread open for another day or so, but I feel we’ve got a good cross-section of questions and will send them to Bill very soon.
Kicking myself I didn’t back Harbinger. 4-1 second favourite was a mad price.
Wouldn’t have backed Workforce at 6-4 never mind odds on. Hard to say what happened but I don’t think he was meant to jump that well as sit so close up. Not much Richie Mullen could have done to help. Stoutey said Moore said he didn’t switch off, which did for him.
Also, I got a bit of needle on here after the Derby when I said he definitely wanted softer ground. Think it’s fair to say he won’t run on anything even that quick again – he hits the ground too hard – maybe partly cos he’s still learning but I think it’s just his action. Also, contrary to what the BBC tell you (does anyone actually listen to Wee Willie?), when I was lucky enough to see him before the Derby he isn’t a "giant"….and if he is, Jan Vermeer is like the Peter Crouch of the horse world.
All credit to Harbinger though – what a performance. Roll on the Arc.
Bill,
I know you’re a fan of Mike de Kock and Aiden O’Brien’s appreciation (and use of) modern technology in training like GPS and treadmills.
What edge do you think these trainers gain over trainers who favour the ‘tried-and-tested’ approach handed down over generations?
That’s just it – those 2 guys are using modern technology along with old fashioned tried and true approaches, that gives them an edge in my opinion. Instead of giving each one a similar regimen, i.e. gallop 2 miles every other day, breeze a half once per week, etc. – they can individualize the workload to match exactly with the current conditioning level.
Do you think there is something noticeable in the attributes of horses trained by users of technology opposed to those that don’t?
I would say horses trained using technology make a few more starts per year and don’t need 3-4 races in them to peak. Plus, trainers with an eye on physiology will force the horse to warm up a bit more quickly before the race.
Many thanks
Cheers for the informed questions so far guys, I’m sure Bill will enjoy getting his teeth into them.
From Tony Cullen, via Facebook:
‘Bill, Why can get some trainers get their horses fit to burst at home and some say "He is as fit as I can get him at home" and the horse is fatter and runs slower than me? And how is this training on the course allowed?’
Too many ‘race’ their horses into shape, afraid to injure them during the morning. Of course, this often results in injury at the track. If a horse breaks down during training there is hell to pay, if it happens on race day there is always an excuse.
Strange to see the consensus of most racing fans sway from being firmly behind Findlays plight to beginning to question his role as part of the ‘racing fraternity’…but the way he has chopped and changed his trainers according to how vocal they’ve been is ridiculous so I can’t say I disagree with the latter group.
Yes, he’s a character but all this about ‘you can’t get rid of the characters, like BIG MAC etc’ is questionable. Has anyone seriously missed HIM from CH4’s racing coverage?!
Time will tell what HF decides to do – but old Mrs Findlay should make sure she doesn’t leave his toys in his pram again.
I always look out for the Weatherbys Super Sprint. Must be the romanticism of buying a 2 grand horse and him paying for himself for life if he wins.
There’ll hopefully be another one soon Wallace so keep your eyes peeled.
I rate him too. We were very close to securing a Stable Tour with him but that trail just went a bit cold. It would have been very interesting and I’ll try and get him to help us with a ‘5 to Follow’ in the coming weeks.
Yet the irony is, the danger of running horses on really heavy dirt is probably just as dangerous. Not to mention the reliance on drugs.
Anyone else annoyed by that smug clown on the Paddy Power advert? you know the one – "this is what losing a £50 bet looks like"
No probs. Thanks for all the questions, and of course to Mike for being so generous with his time
