Plenty of people on the Left do believe that as an article of faith. But if you are right and they don’t, what does the Left believe in then, if it doesn’t believe its own ideology?
It occurred to me earlier this week that if I could ask Keir Starmer one question I would ask what his government is for. No doubt he would give me some vague, woolly answer about making a fairer society but he doesn’t seem to have any idea how to bring it about and everything in British public life seems to be getting demonstrably worse by the day.

And yet two of the top three polling parties have traded power for generations and therefore must have brought us to where we are, and the other is a slightly different version of the same thing. But next time it’ll be different, right?
Some left wing ideas are good, some right wing ones are. One does not have to subscribe entirely to one side or the other.
January 24, 2026 at 09:01 #1751475What did the Boris or Truss what there government stand for , I’d say one thing Labour stand for is the NHS , are those waiting times coming down .. they most certainly are , I see more cancer doctors are being placed in more remote areas to combat the postcode lottery of care , I repeat we aren’t going to fix 12 years of Tory mismanagement in 2 years , Starmer ain’t perfect but he’s better than anything the Tories offered , that’s the Tory party that’s now seeing the rats deserting the sinking ship

January 24, 2026 at 09:13 #1751487Correct, Richard. As I have pointed out on these pages and nauseam, between them these two parties have misgoverned Britain for over 100 years. And yet people still vote for them, albeit in smaller numbers than previously. They used to poll over 90% of the vote between them on much higher turnouts, whereas in 2024 they barely scraped 60% on a 59% turnout. And they are forecast to get even less than that now.
I have given up on expecting change to happen from within the system (of which Reform is also part, even though it affects otherwise). It is the system itself that is the problem and needs to fall.
It should start at local level. In all the council areas where elections have been cancelled, everyone should refuse to pay their council tax. No taxation without representation is a long standing principle.
Let’s see how long the rotten edifice would last if people withdrew their consent. Governments do not own us. They are our servants, not out rulers and could do with being reminded of that fact. We are under no obligation to obey a political class which no longer represents our interests. Some of the greatest intellects in Western political thought have said as much.
Someone had the right idea in the middle of the 17th century.
January 24, 2026 at 09:19 #1751490“I’d say one thing Labour stand for is the NHS”
The worst healthcare system in the Western world. There are good people in it who try their best but they are in a system which is demonstrably worse than that of our neighbours.
If the NHS really is “the envy of the world” as the likes of Starmer would have us believe, why has nowhere else copied it?
Unfortunately the NHS has become a secular religion. Anyone who makes even the mildest constructive criticism of it is condemned. And whilst it is put on that pedestal beyond criticism and reproach, it will continue to get worse not better.
We really ought to move towards the French system of providing healthcare, which is clearly better.

January 25, 2026 at 05:28 #1751776It was a stupid thing to say and he has rightly apologised.
January 25, 2026 at 07:33 #1751790There hasn’t been an apology CAS and he won’t give one.
Trump going back on a disgusting interview he gave to Fox News. Like Moehat says there were thousands of other service personnel who made tours to both Afghanistan and Iraq from other NATO countries, many who were killed in action. I’m sure these troops will have been put where they were told, whether that’s on the front line or slightly off it as Trump puts it. The point is servicemen lost their lives in wars which had little to do with them or the nations they served. All of which would have had a devastating effect on the friends and family of these men and women.
Having seen what Ben Parkinson has gone through by watching on Look North, one can’t imagine what he and his family went through at the time of the attack and the aftermath and recovery, which is still ongoing nearly 20 years on.
Those who think that Trump is anyway right in saying what he said need to give their head a wobble.
January 25, 2026 at 07:42 #1751791CAS – “You don’t believe Trump was seriously considering invading the territory of another NATO member? Even he wouldn’t do that.”
How come when Starmer makes a small error you are all over him like a rash yet when Trump makes a monumental one you play it down by saying he didn’t mean it.
I’m no Starmer supporter but I’d rather have him as the leader of my country than that buffoon. Mind you saying that I’d rather have Johnson. Farage would be a close run thing.
January 25, 2026 at 08:03 #1751794Homer that was an apology , funnily enough after the Starmer call

Still he’s stopped several wars (between several fictional nations) and according to him if the Americans didn’t intervene in World War Two they would now be speaking German in Switzerland.

You've got to accentuate the positive.
Eliminate the negative.
Latch on to the affirmative.
