Thanks for Triptych. She paid for my trip to the Ebor.

Do you remember when she was a proper little madam in the Coronation Cup, but in the end finally condescended to win the race?

Who left a tractor or trailer in the paddock, for her to run into in the middle of the night?

No racehorse I have seen revealed as much acceleartion nad finishing speed as Dancing Brave in the 1986 Arc,beating the bset field since Sea Bird ,in the fastest last furlong ever. The Brave never proved himself on soft going like Mill Reef but on firm going was arguably only behind Sea Bird.Since Sea Bird’s Arc Dancing Brave’s 1986 Arc win was possibly the best middle distance win in a big race. But for wrong riding tacctics he would have been the fisrt horse to win the guineas,Derby.King George and Arc quartet. He had sheer brilliance to be a champion over a mile,10 furlongs and a mile and ahalf. On soft going or over a mile and ahalf he would have been overpowered by Mill Reef and Nijinsky but on firm going he was arguably next only to Sea Bird and Sea the Stars.

Crikey – this thread was a long time ago! We never quite got the TRF Hall Of Fame off the ground. Perhaps now is the time?

I would like to nominate David Wesley Yates for his never give up attitude and perseverance in nursing the wonderful Monets Garden back to health. he is certainly an owner to admire. (The old boy is continuing to improve and is now able to be turned out in his field).

Jockeys ; Piggott, Eddery, Richards, McCoy, Mellor,

    Trainers ; Cecil, M V O’Brien, A P O’Brien, Murless, Stoute

NH Horses ; Arkle, Mill House, Night Nurse, Istabraq, Flyingbolt

    Damnit.
    I forgot Nijinsky.
This is a great thread, but I can see it driving me mad tonight as other champions come to mind

Here’s one who belongs in both Chaser and Hurdles. Dawn Run the only horse to win the top prize in both categories.

WA Stephenson – Arthur was the shrewdest trainer around, winning trainer of the Gimcrack and Middle Park but most famous for great jumpers like The Thinker, Blazing Walker and One Man

Sorry to be pedantic about opinions but surely Mr Richards deserves the credit for the lovely One Man ?
Mr Stephenson was notoriously difficult to follow for me as he seemed to be very capable, but to have a big string, but with a relatively low strike rate, as I recollect

One I would chuck in to the ring is

    Red Evie

    . In 2 seasons she won a maiden, 2 handicaps, a conditions race, a listed handicap, a group3, a group2 and 2 group1s from her 15 stats

    My flat horses are Sea Bird,Ribot,Sea the Stars,Mill Reef,Brigadier Gerard,Tudor Minstrel,Generous,Dancing Brave,Shergar,Troy,Sir Ivor,Crepello,Hyperion,Sceptre,Pretty Polly,Oh So Sharp,Dahlia,Nashwan,El Gran Senor,Alleged,Golden Fleece,Peintre Celebre,Allez France,Frankel,Petit Etoile,Park Top,Busted and Reference Point.

    My steeplechasers are Arkle,Golden Miller,Mill House,Prince Regent,Easter Hero,Flyingbolt , Desert Orchid,Captain Christy,Red Rum,THe Dikler,L’Escargot,Kauto’s Star,Best Mate,Tied Cottage ,Crisp,See more Business and Pendil.

My hurdlers are Night Nurse.Monskield,Sir Ken,Hatton’s Grace,See You Then,Istabraq and Sea Pigeon.

My personal favourite steeplechaser was Tied Cottage who morally won the 1980 Cheltenaam Gold Cup but was disqualified on technical grounds for carrying a prohibited substance. He led all the way to win by 8 lengths in a most effortles fashion to compensate for falling at the last when neck to neck with Alverton. The positive substance was found in such minute quantity that it could not possibly have affected his performance-one of the best ever in the Gold Cup.Imagine making the running and almost leading to the last in 3 consecutive Gold Cups.Tied Cottage is the unluckets horse in Gold cup history.

Morally Crisp was the hero of the 1973 Grand National carrying top weight and giving the greatset front running exhibition ever witnessed in the history of the big race.He led the field by over 25 lengths for most of the race and virtually toyed with the field as though staging awaltz.Pitman’s wrong riding in the end cost him the race.

In the Epsom Derby the ultimate performances were by Shergar,Troy and Sea Bird.Shergar morally won the 1981 Derby by 15 lenghts as though performing a Waltz.Troy came from 7th place at Tattenham Corner to accelerate like a motor car to win by 7 lenghts in 1979. Sea Bird almost looked like running an exhibition race gliding to victory in 1965..For finishing speed the great Sir Ivor was the ultimate in the 1968 guineas and Derby and Dancing Brave’s 1986 arc was the best ever performance in a big race terms of finishing speed running the last furlong in 10.8 secs. For sheer superiority Sea Bird’s 1965 Arc win and Nijnsky’s 1970 and Mill Reef’s 1971 King George wins were the most memorable.Over a mile the Brigadier’s 1971 Guineas win was the best ever performance where he beat stalwarts like Mill Reef and My Swallow, just eclipsing Tudor Minstrel’s in 1947 and Frankel’s latest exploits.

Mill Reef was the ultimate British middle distance racehorse on Soft ground ,Sea the Stars the most complete British middle-distance champion,Nijinsky the winner of the middle distance crown in terms of races won statistically,Briagadier Gerard the bset British champion overall,Dahlia, the most versatile and ultimate racemare while Sea Bird was the champion of champions, just edging Ribot, the most durable of superstars.

Amongst chasers ,Arkle was in a different league like a creature from another planet .His closest challengers were Best Mate,Golden Miller and Flying Bolt.

My favourite hurdler was the great Night Nurse.I can’t forget Monksfield’s courage and Sea Pigeon’s versatality.

A very intensive list ChrisHardiman, and you won’t get any arguements from me on them. However can I just add Aldaniti to the chasers list for coming back from life threatening injury to win the 1981 Grand National and ditto for

    BOB CHAMPION

    in the jockey category.
