I’ve only just realised that no one has nominated Cigar.
The problem with being interested in horseracing is that one never discusses it with other people, because they ain’t interested. I’ve been under the impression that he is the best horse we’ve seen in the past decade or so. Isn’t that the case?
February 1, 2009 at 15:47 #207498Whoever nominated Sir Percy, please hang your head in shame!
February 1, 2009 at 15:55 #207500On that basis, what should Ugly Mare do for nominating Matt Chapman as Best Presenter????

February 1, 2009 at 16:20 #207509Tell you what, d_m, I won’t vote for your overrated animal and you don’t vote for my underrated animal.
It’s a nominations thread, btw, Colin’s right. You can concievably vote for Trigger, Black Beauty, Copenhagen or Peter the pantomime horse. We’ll all get a chance in the Hustings, I’m sure.
February 1, 2009 at 16:31 #207514Deering seems to be on the Forum, so there could be a nomination coming for the horse with the big heart, . . . .

Just to clear up, I was only joking and am all for everybody having an opinion. However, how is DM over-rated? Sir Percy wouldn’t see which way he went!
February 2, 2009 at 00:48 #207611Istabraq, Persian War, Bula, Night Nurse, Comedy of Errors, Inglis Drever, Baracouda, Monksfield, Lanzarote, Sea Pigeon,
I don’t think I can argue with that. Comedy Of Errors holds a special place for me, being the first horse I was really fond of. I will add Hardy Eustace though.
Chasers: Red Rum, Desert Orchid, Best Mate, Kauto Star, Burrough Hill Lad, Spot thedifference…..I’m stuck.
Not really into flat horses but the one I’d stick at the top of my small list would be Ouija Board.
February 2, 2009 at 05:19 #207658edit: Rags To Riches is having a rendezvous with Giant’s Causeway.
…thank you for letting me know Gerald – I wasn’t aware of that, so really something to look forward to for us.
Who can forget Cigar? although he wasn’t a great favourite of mine. So many names we could all have included I think. I was hoping Mr Deering would at least have come up with ‘Sunline’.
February 2, 2009 at 10:14 #207675I had better do it for him, or else there will be an almighty row when he isn’t among the final nominations.

February 2, 2009 at 18:03 #207708My own thoughts thrown into the mixer (there will be few beyond the last 10 years):
Hurdlers: Istabraq, Inglis Drever
Chasers: Moscow Flyer, Dawn Run
Flat: Secretariat (still can’t believe the Belmont video I’ve seen is genuine), Yeats, Borderlescott.
Jockeys: Richard Dunwoody, tentative nod for the mercurial Paul Carberry.
Trainers: Dermot Weld and the obvious A P O’Brien.
Others: Freddie Williams, J P McManus.February 2, 2009 at 19:04 #207711Lingfield Park – for pioneering AW racing in this country and creating a large part of the industry as well as a blue print for the future of racing in this country
simon,
interesting line of thought, but surely that nomination should be for the indisputable father of AW racing in England, the seldom-mentioned Ron Muddle ?
he was prime mover for AW not only at Lingfield (after taking that course over from Ladbrokes in the 1980s) but also (along with son Richard) at Southwell and Wolverhampton.
AW was an innovation arising from one person with a vision willing to fight for it and take personal risks, rather than from any of the salaried institutional non-risk-takers nominally charged with innovating and developing.
best regards

February 2, 2009 at 20:34 #207730When did Golden Cygnet go chasing David?

Seriously though, it would be a travesty if this horse was left out. Would have been an absolute superstar.
February 2, 2009 at 20:53 #207735Ehhhhh … my Dad saw him school over fences and said he was the best chaser he ever saw

I’d also like to nominate Golden Miller as one of the chasers!
