I thought Battle Of Marengo made hard work of that today. The whip was up early enough and he didn’t put the expected distance between himself and the others in an uncompetitive affair. The runner up looks a big, gangly awkward ride and the commentators tried to make excuses for the Fav not being very impressive.

I doubt that Dawn approach fans will by lying awake worrying about that performance from "The undisputed Ballydoyle number one", who I would have been more interested to see running in The Dante.

I agree Steve. Loch Garman looked very awkward and I thought Battle Of Marengo would go clear when they turned in but it never happened. He looks like more of a Curragh type to me where the big galloping track should suit. Around Epsom I’m not sure he’ll have the tactical speed. Having backed Dawn Approach I’ll sleep sound enough tonight please God

Dutching on the Irish runners in the Dante. If either wins it’ll pay a little over 5/4 for my 20

    Trading Leather
    €7.69 win @ 5/1 (PP)

    Indian Chief
    €12.31 win @ 11/4 (PP)

2nd and 3rd, oh well! A good result for Dawn Approach at least.

    I’ve decided to back

    SABURO

for the 2000 Guineas. The horse who was third behind him,

    Stubbs

, came out and won well yesterday and Stan James reacted by cutting Saburo into 16/1 fav. BetVictor however are more generous and quote 25/1. I notice Gord is discussing Coventry horses on his thread and I think this horse will definitely be in the mix. Jim Bolger seems to have serious quality in his two year olds this year with this horse and

    Club Wexford

the pick so far for me.

    Hope so Gord!

A proper entry for the Marble Hill at the Curragh on Saturday, with

    Club Wexford

    ,

    Coach House

    ,

    Fast In The Wind

    and

    Stubbs

    all entered. :D

There’s an entry of 19 for the Irish 2000 Guineas on Saturday. I’d expect the final declaration number to be about half that, as Aidan O Brien, Jim Bolger and Richard Handed are all mob-handed and won’t run all their horses. Bolger has Trading Leather and Loch Garman in there but they surely need further after staying on well over 10 furlongs last time. He has also has Leitir Mór who I think will run and is perhaps overpriced at 25/1. It wouldn’t surprise if he ran a place.

Hannon has said he is likely to run both Van Der Neer and Olympic Glory, who are among the favourites. Both would command respect but his other entry Havana Gold, is one I’d be interested in at 14/1. However, he may wait for the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot over 7 furlongs instead, so isn’t an ante-post proposition at his stage.

Johnny Murtagh and Tommy Carmody have Fort Knox in, who won the Leopardstown trial in stylish fashion. He needs to improve but it’s possible he could. He’s yet to be tried on decent ground which is the only worry, and as such his price looks about right at 7 or 8/1. Andrew Oliver’s First Cornerstone is another who could run well at a price but he hasn’t run since the Racing Post Trophy last year and on breeding you would think he’ll be better over further than a mile.

O’Brien has nine horses entered and it wouldn’t surprise if he runs 4 or 5 which isn’t unusual in the Irish classics. Gale Force Ten ran well in France last time but Mars and Magician are more likely to head for Derby’s in France or England. The one who currently holds favouritism is

    CRISTOFORO COLOMBO

. He ran a fine race in 5th at Newmarket behind Dawn Approach, and the good-firm ground should be right up his alley, being by Henrythenavigator, who won this with ease as a 3yo, beating none other than New Approach. He’s 3/1 with BetVictor and I think that’s worth taking. I feel a lot of these are unlikely to run and Boylesports 9/4 looks more realistic.

    Irish 2000 Guineas

Olypic Glory is now a non runner and

    HAVANA GOLD

is now likely to run. The 14/1 won’t last imo.

Backing St Nicholas Abbey in Coronation Cups has been happy hunting in recent years and next weekends renewal should be no different in my opinion. There’s no Midday here although Dunaden is a worthy opponent though perhaps will find it difficult to overcome the 4 lengths he was beaten in Dubai. St Nic looked as good as ever in that race and I’d see him as more of a 1/2 chance than 4/5.

Same as Pants :? It wouldn’t bother me in the slightest if he’s not the stable number one, what would bother me is having taken 3/1!

More of a  now Tommy, have you heard why he’s been withdrawn? The perils of antepost eh! Telescope on the other hand coming out (not good for the race I know) makes my 6/4 on DA look a decent bet now.

You said it Pants. I have Havana Gold at 14/1 and Dawn Approach at 5/2 so hopefully one or both of them will reward the ante post faith! :)

I usually try stay away from the lower quality stuff but I’m going to have a little dabble in the 6.55 at Clonmel this evening. Sweet Refusal caught my eye (and many others) last time out at Wexford but I was hoping for a price more like 9/2 or 5/1, rather than the 7/2 currently available. If he drifts I might have a small e/w punt. When going through the card

    High Hill Beauty

stood out. Ran three times in maidens over 6,5 and 6 furlongs last term. Being by Papal Bull you would think this step up to 10 furlongs will surely help, and off a mark of 47 with a 7 lb claimer she could be competitive. The fact that there’s a bit of blue about her on Oddschecker has prompted me to back her for small money.

Thought I was about to land a nice touch there! Was hammered into 8/1 at the off and was cruising turning into the straight, before completely chucking in the towel when push came to shove. Beaten 3 lengths into 5th, that is why I think it’s best to keep stakes low in these races. I’d say she was very short in running.

I’m surprised Club Wexford is running tomorrow instead of the 6 furlong maiden on Sunday. After his last run the last thing I thought he wanted was dropping back in trip. Perhaps he’s been setting serious fractions at home but as much as I thought he was one for ‘next time’ after his debut, I think 7/2 is plenty short enough tomorrow. Coach House was very impressive first time up and I’d expect him to reverse form with Fast In The Wind. Stubbs has a similar profile, with a promising run first time and an easy victory second time out. I can’t split them but the bookies have been kind enough to do that for me, with one at evens and the other at 4/1. I think I’ll have an interest in him, although it could be wise to treat this as a ‘race to watch’!

Leitir Mór is overpriced at 10/1. He’s only won once in 14 starts but he’s rarely out of the frame and he’s clear of all on ratings bar Maarek who could struggle with this ground. I got stung on Cristoforo Colombo but have Havana Gold running for me at 14/1. It’s another case of ‘Bolger knows best’ here if you’re backing Trading Leather. He looks like he wants further but who am I to question the Master of Cool?

Elsewhere on the card, I want to get Jonibake’s thoughts on Chigun. I don’t like opposing Dermot Weld fillies and Caponata looks a typically late improving Weld horse. Chigun looks the main danger. In the penultimate mile handicap I quite like Ger Lyons’ Machete Mark, who won snugly at Dundalk last time out and should be available at 5 or 6/1.
