I’m a glutton for punishment regarding the Flat but after much deliberation I’m back for another season. Hasn’t been overly successful for me the past two years but hopefully I can set the record straight this time around.
The only ante-post bet I’ve had is Cristoforo Colombo for the 2000 Guineas at 20/1. If the ground is fast I’m confident he can rattle Dawn Approach’s cage, but on anything else he might as well stay at home.
One horse to have already ran this season tat really caught my eye is Jim Bolger’s Saburo, who I’ve mentioned on the other thread. When he steps up in trip he could be a very good horse.
I know there are some fans of Battle Of Marengo on the forum but I’m backing one against him tomorrow. It’s not unusual for an O’Brien horse to get overturned early season, and it’s also no unusual for a Bolger horse to spring a surprise in this. That horse could be Alpinist, who looks a typically hardy sort from Coolcullen. He’s also the only horse in the field to have had he benefit of a run, and I’m sure he’ll be ready to run for his life tomorrow, unlike the short priced favourite. I’ve backed him already at 9/1, but might back him again in the market without Battle Of Marengo.
There’s one other horse I’ll be backing tomorrow, but will have to wait for a price in the morning.
Leopardstown 4.15
Alpinist
€5 e/w @ 9/1 (Backed with Bet Victor, price now 17/2 with them but 9/1 still available elsewhere)- €10[/color:1pi97b2r]
April 14, 2013 at 12:16 #436245The other horse I’m backing today is
Focus On Venice
, another Bolger colt, who runs in the opening 6 furlong maiden. He’s meant to be working well at home and whatever beats him will be a smart horse. I’m sure Bolger would like his first Intense Focus runner to be a winner too

Leopardstown 2.05
Focus On Venice
€10 e/w @ 4/1 (WH)- €30

Battle Of Marengo was quite impressive there in conceit of five pounds to his rivals. Alpinist was extremely disappointing, trailed in a long way last behind his less fancied stable mate.

€10 e/w @ 4/1 (WH)Focus On Venice looked very game when holding off the O’Brien horse, few hefty wagers collected I would think. I love the way Bolger’s horses keep finding, they all seem to have that customary toughness.
Nice way to start the season, both horses were well supported too, going off considerably shorter than when backed, although in Alpinist’s case this was partly due to a Rule 4.
+ €40

runs in the Gordon Richards Stakes tomorrow. I remember after his Dante second I commented that he reminded me of a previous Hamdam Al Maktoum inmate
Mawatheeq
. Won’t back him tomorrow, but I’ll be watching closely.
May 4, 2013 at 07:53 #438460I’m on
Cristoforo Colombo
since the Coventry but surely
Dawn Approach
is a value bet at 2/1. Jim Bolger is not one for hyperbole so when he describes a horses progress as awesome you have to take note. I think CC can give him a real scare today but hopefully one of them will win.
Newmarket 3.50
Dawn Approach
€20 win @ 2/1 (Ladbrokes)+ €20
May 4, 2013 at 14:23 #438520With the ground looking very quick, my confidence in
Cristoforo Colombo
is growing despite the drift and I’ve backed him again. He’s 10/1 with Ladbrokes who are refunding losing bets if Dawn Approach wins.
3.50 Newmarket
Cristoforo Colombo
€10 e/w @ 10/1 (Ladbrokes)0
May 4, 2013 at 15:35 #438536Should have stated that Ladbrokes are refunding bets as a
free bet
, so I hope nobody backed anything under the illusion they’d get their money back as a result of my post, sorry

Anyway, a profitable day for the thread. Cristoforo disappointed me today. Imo he’s had valid excuses in the past but everything seemed right for him today. He did run on well but he was one of the first to be pushed along. Could it be that he needed the race? Perhaps Gord will be able tell us more as he was there and probably had a look at him.
A very well done to Gord too who I think might have backed Dawn Approach ante post

May 4, 2013 at 15:52 #438544Just taken Ladbrokes 5/2 on
Dawn Approach
for the Derby. The further he goes the better he looks imo. I think he may take in the Irish 2000 in the meantime but if any trainer can achieve that treble it’s surely Jim Bolger. He looks head and shoulders above his peers and there isn’t anything else in the market that frightens me to be honest.
Epsom Derby
Dawn Approach
€40 win @ 5/2 (Ladbrokes)+ €20 (& €20 free bet)
May 5, 2013 at 12:13 #438724Seems Ladbrokes were only refunding the win part of bets

Putting the tenner on
Hot Snap
(5/2) in the 1000 Guineas today at Newmarket. The way she won last time out suggested she could be quite special. She could be even better over further so backing her to do the Guineas/Oaks double as well. I think Ollie Olga could be the surprise package of the race and will be backing her without the fav.
3.50 Newmarket
Hot Snap
€10 free bet win @ 5/2 (Ladbrokes)3.50 Newmarket (without the fav)
Ollie Olga
€5 e/w @ 28/1 (PP)1000 Guineas & Oaks double
Hot Snap
€10 @ 14/1 (PP)+/- 0
May 5, 2013 at 15:19 #438745I’ve just taken the 5/1 with WH for
Moth
to win the Oaks. She traveled beautifully and even after her run was checked she stayed on powerfully. Hot Snap was disappointing and my other bet Ollie Olga likewise.
Oaks
Moth
€15 e/w @ 5/1- €30
May 5, 2013 at 23:01 #438820I fancy Parish Hall to give Camelot plenty to do tomorrow. He has the benefit of a run which Camelot does not, and some big name Ballydoyle stars have been beaten first time out in recent seasons. Imo he’s a safe e/w bet with onlu 5 runners and little else in the field.
Curragh tomorrow
Parish Hall
€12.50 e/w @ 3/1 (Boyles)– €55
May 6, 2013 at 11:50 #438854I opened a new thread on this forum so hope you could pop in there i do.A few irish tips in thread for today too.
May 8, 2013 at 12:53 #439024Hi Darren, will have a look later, in a bit of a rush now! Just popped in with a bet on tomorrow’s Chester Vase.
Chester Vase
Ruler Of The World
€20 win @ 7/4 (PP)- €75

Chester Vase
Ruler Of The World
€20 win @ 7/4 (PP)A good won for
RULER OF THE WORLD
, who confirmed the good impression he made when winning earlier in the season. Nice to get on the early price too, where I feel bookies often take a chance.
- €20
May 12, 2013 at 14:48 #439427Have to back
Loch Garman
at 4/1. He has top two year old form and Bolger’s horses are in fine fettle, although We’ll Go Walking was disappointing in the last. Battle Of Marengo will probably win but is too short now imo.
LOCH GARMAN ABÚ

Leopardstown
Loch Garman
€5 win @ 4/1 (PP)- €25
May 12, 2013 at 14:55 #439429Agree Tommy, should be closer then odds suggest. We’ll see.
Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
May 12, 2013 at 15:12 #439430I thought Battle Of Marengo made hard work of that today. The whip was up early enough and he didn’t put the expected distance between himself and the others in an uncompetitive affair. The runner up looks a big, gangly awkward ride and the commentators tried to make excuses for the Fav not being very impressive.
I doubt that Dawn approach fans will by lying awake worrying about that performance from "The undisputed Ballydoyle number one", who I would have been more interested to see running in The Dante.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
