Oh look, the ‘left wing’ BBC has finally remembered how to apply scrutiny to politicians. If it put half as much effort into Reform as does with the Greens maybe we wouldn’t be in quite such a mess. Well done Polanski on calling out their bollocks.
March 1, 2026 at 15:11 #1756834I’ve posted this before with no response so I guess no-one’s interested.
Just to say I’ve just finished watching Years and Years, a short tv series about the fortunes of a family in a near future dystopian UK.Maybe everyone’s seen it and thought it was rubbish, I don’t know.
But I thought it was timely and chilling and relevant today.
It was made in 2019 I think, is excellent and is on Netflix if anyone hasn’t seen it and fancies it.
March 1, 2026 at 16:32 #1756842“We are like Canada were, totally controlled by the USA, until Mark Carney came along. I wish he were our Prime Minister.”
That would be the Mark Carney who said yesterday:
“Canada supports the United States acting to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and to prevent its regime from further threatening international peace and security”.
He might not be committing his own armed forces but he openly supports the American military action.
March 2, 2026 at 08:25 #1756908I finished reading the current issue of “History Today” yesterday. It is good to see the old magazine back in sparkling form in its 75th year, after a rather indifferent period recently.
The last page is in the form of a standard questionnaire, to which an eminent historian supplies the answer. This month it was the turn of Dr Alexander Lee, a specialist in the history of the Renaissance at the University of Warwick (and a regular contributor to the magazine).
To the question “What historical topic have you changed your mind on?”, Dr Lee replied:
“Most things. History is a discipline of doubt: if you aren’t willing to change your mind about everything, I’m not sure you can progress with anything.”
I believe that is a very wise statement. I only wish it could be shared with a wider audience.
A large cause of our increasingly polarised society and fractured political culture is due to barely qualified politicians and internet keyboard warriors asserting half baked opinions as if they are facts, while denouncing their opponents as not merely wrong but as stupid and nasty as well.
There is no point in having a mind unless you are prepared to think with it and change it sometimes. And a little humbleness, humility and the rediscovery of the power of doubt would go a long way.
