The European Team just pipped ‘The Girls’ team by a single point.
Olivier Peslier won the Silver Saddle, with Emma-Jayne Wilson a close second.

Maybe so, but team betting is available and if you had a flutter on a particular team to win it, like I do every year, then you might – just might be interested.

August 8, 2015 at 09:44 #1165887I would say it was a paint drying day but then I noticed the girls team…..

August 8, 2015 at 10:14 #1165939The Shergar Cup isn’t for me thanks. I think Nathan’s ‘Poem of the Year’ is more thrilling!
August 8, 2015 at 10:27 #1165961I’ve never had a bet on the meeting. It’s glorified graded Greyhound Racing in my opinion.
They are trying to make it sound like the Breeder’s Cup meeting, with race titles such as “The Shergar Cup Classic” but this particular “Classic” is a handicap where the best rated horse is ranked 94
I saw a guy last night who looked like Lester Piggott, it probably wasn’t him but he said to me that Ardross was running in the Shergar Cup. I was a bit astonished by that but it turned out what he actually said was “That Shergar Cup…..the races ARE Dross”

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
August 9, 2015 at 15:47 #1167574Heartwarming to see that hostility to outsiders and a refusal to countenance anything different happening in the sport, even for just one day in the year, is alive and well on this forum.
August 9, 2015 at 16:18 #1167648I agree, that post from the Ghost really upset me.

August 9, 2015 at 16:31 #1167667Worth noting that the attendance in 2013 and 2014 was better than for any Ascot fixture outside the Royal meeting, even better than Champions Day. This year is likely the same with over 30,000 there yesterday. That can only be good for racing.
August 9, 2015 at 17:08 #1167702The figures needed to be looked at in context as I suspect the attraction for most of those there yesterday was the 4½ hour concert which followed racing and the overwhelming majority stayed for the concert, evidenced by the fact it is the easiest exit of the year from Ascot if you did leave after the last race, I left at half four and there was virtually no traffic at all.
Having said that it is still probably no bad thing as even if a small percentage of the concert goers find the racing interesting and become hooked it cannot be bad for the sport.
I’m not sure what the on-course betting turnover but when I ventured into the grandstand enclosure between races two and three there were decent queues at the bookmakers.
It’s also worth noting that the racecourse had a different commentary to RUK and C4 with Mike Vince having his annual foray behind the commentators microphone and although his commentaries were not for the purists he did engage the crowds.
I hated the Shergar cup with a vengeance when it first started but it has grown on me. It’s a fun day and it’s only one meeting a year – for those who want “normal” racing there was plenty of choice elsewhere yesterday.
If people don’t like it that’s fine but in the grand scheme of things it does little harm and racing has much weightier things to worry about.
August 9, 2015 at 17:10 #1167703With well over a thousand race meetings a year surely there’s room for one to be a team event?

Yep, a silly-season summer-hols bit of fun and it must appeal to many as it’s been going for 16 years
Good to be reading your posts again Osterbeast. How long did you survive on cold turkey before the inevitable, irresistible relapse into race-going occurred?

Thanks Drone – I started going racing again the beginning of this year and, I have to confess, I initially felt quite indifferent about it, but I was at Ascot for AP’s final rides there and that’s when it started becoming enjoyable again.
Have only been racing about a dozen times this year and still haven’t had a bet yet.
It’s odd I wrote most of the eulogy for Sir Peter back in 2008 and I’m glad I had to wait so long before having to finish it, although I was hoping I would have been able to turned it into a 100th birthday celebration.

What hostility to outsiders?

I can’t prove it but my feeling is that this notion is probably a total myth perpetuated by marketing men.
