I think Non-vintage makes a very good point. Being a "hardcore" Horseracing nut personally I have no interest in the event at all.
But the wider issue is that if we carry on like we are the sport I love will become very much a minority sport with no new blood being attracted to it.
I despair of the insular attitude of a lot of people in racing who pour scorn on any new initative. 48 hr decs being a good case in point.
My horse ran last week at Goodwood and you should have seen the letter I got instructing me what to wear. Tie or cravate compulsary!! What century are we living in?
And I can still remember a couple of years ago when my son wasn’t allowed in one of the enclosures at Goodwood as he wasn’t old enough.
We really don’t want any young people to get the horseracing bug do we because it might spoil it for all us old duffers.
August 7, 2007 at 14:18 #110797Just as I was beginning to get excited about this event, I read that a number of top jockeys have declined to take part, the latest quartet being Jamie Spencer, Ryan Moore, Olivier Peslier and Gerald Mosse

‘Declined to take part’ might be a bit strong as I don’t know the real reason they are not there, but it all adds up to the same result, which is they won’t be there lol. Maybe it’s because they were required to spend 20 minutes or so signing autographs and being nice.

August 7, 2007 at 19:03 #110813Sadly they have to fulfil contracts to ride elsewhere. Its tough when it clashes with group races at Haydock, Newmarket and Arlington Park as well as Deauville.
Luckily Frankie has been let off his retainer so he’ll still captain the European team

Yes, but he will be 80 minutes late for the autograph session – well if he can keep the likes of Lester Piggot, Joe Mercer & Pat Eddery waiting for an hour to have a very important photo took, then why should he care about the public lol
August 8, 2007 at 00:27 #110828Surely the best way to enjoy Shergar Cup day is to back Chris Wall’s runner in the Sprint. If both get in, do the reverse forecast. Royal Rock’s form continues to be boosted through the likes of Marozi and will be just 3 lb higher at Ascot. Sadly I fear he may not get in. Sundae’s form comes under the microscope at Newcastle on Wednesday as Barkass reappears.
August 8, 2007 at 09:18 #110847I’m only going to see Madness play afterwards.

August 9, 2007 at 12:13 #110946Salute has ended up as 2nd reserve for the 2M race, so it’s fingers crossed that a couple of those above us don’t fancy the fast ground or the appointed jockey.
Not a problem as we’ve got an alternative at Nottingham next Tuesday.
If he does get a run, it’ll be interesting to see what happens if the jockey we end up with from the non runner can’t do the weight of 8-9 – would we be forced to carry overweight ?

August 8, 2012 at 12:33 #22403How to tell the kids about the Shergar Cup.
That Frankie is not as British as Kieren.Frankie rides for Europe while Kieren represents Britain. Some manipulation.France Germany and Italy could not find three jockeys to represent Europe? Britain could not find a team? ?Surely Ireland could be represented by Murtagh,Queally and Hughes? England by Moore,Buick and Frankie. Ireland alone won last year?Perhaps the racing authorities could not find enough horses to enter two teams from these isles?I just fine it interesting, perhaps someplace there is an explanation.
August 8, 2012 at 13:04 #409233I also thought it strange that there are not separate Irish and British teams this year Andy. I think last year Ireland were represented by Hughes, Fran Berry and Colm O’Donoghue. However, they have now added a female only team so as you say perhaps there aren’t the horses entered for five teams.
August 8, 2012 at 13:52 #409240Tell the kids not to bet on it!!
I have never placed a bet on a Shergar Cup race and I never will. Mickey Mouse meets It’s a Knockout, with horses thrown in. All we need is someone carrying out Britain’s Joker card and Stewart Hall guffawing inanely before screaming "We’re in the points, we’re in the points!!"
Eddie Waring must be turning in his grave.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
August 8, 2012 at 14:32 #409247Steve , your post made me grin , I remember Eddie Waring well ….the only 2 words to describe the Shergar cup is AVOID IT

August 8, 2012 at 15:20 #409252I used to despise the Shergar Cup but it is now one of my favourite race meetings.
An almost sell-out crowd having good fun. The riders are accessible and it is a good shop window for newcomers.
All races guaranteed to have ten runners, usually competitive – then again I rarely bet so I couldn’t care less if they are not betting prospects.
For those obsessed with betting and who feel racing without betting is irrelevant there are three other meetings in the afternoon and two others in the evening to throw their money at.
On the perceived issue re Dettori / Fallon – there is no issue. Dettori is Italian therefore part of the European team. Fallon is Irish and therefore part of the GB and Ireland team. As has been pointed out there is a female team this year, hence the merger of what was the GB and Irish teams into a single team. A five team set up would be more difficult to organise.
My only gripe about the meeting is the team colours which makes following the race somewhat tricky – especially if it is overcast.

Couldn’t put it better myself!
August 8, 2012 at 18:03 #409274I actually knew that Frankie was Italian and Fallon Irish.Just ashame there was no room for some of the great Continental/French riders like Barzalona. Also no room for any of the best English jockeys;Buick,Moore, Hannigan.Fallon is hardly a flag bearer for GB and I.Hughesie,Murtagh,Spencer more popular.
