Does anyone else think the Shergar Cup is a load of rubbish?
For it to be on the prime time Saturday slot every year is a complete waste of a potentially good day of racing for me.
Is it just me?
August 6, 2017 at 18:27 #1313131A bit harsh to knock the quality of racing really. You can’t expect G1s every week, especially so soon after we had so many good races (covering most of the disciplines) at Goodwood.
Even if you’re like me and don’t care much about the Silver Saddle or winning team, you still get six valuable top-end handicaps at the Shergar Cup – all good betting races with good handicappers. You can always drown out the promotional guff and melodrama by watching the away meetings between races.
Plus it’s a chance for a bit of good publicity for the sport – Sammy-Jo and the girls winning two years ago must be one our best bits of PR in the last decade.
August 6, 2017 at 19:11 #1313137It’s not for me but it’s one weekend in the year and hugely and unexpectedly successful. Can’t call it rubbish on that basis
August 6, 2017 at 20:06 #1313142I went once a few years back – never again. It was one of my worst experiences in racing.
Too expensive, limited field sizes, team tactics, silly people attend, poor odds, boring races, poor rides, etc…
August 6, 2017 at 21:51 #1313144Have to agree with Charles I hardly give it a second glance.
Horses don’t go so well for different jockeys so you are taking a risk when following an old favourite who is being ridden by a jockey totally unknown to the horse and trainer and who may not take a bit of notice of any special instructions given to him\her. I’ll be at Newmarket for the all grey horse race on the 12th and I won’t be setting the You View box to record ch.4 at Ascot
The Shergar Cup should be a Group race run at Epsom at the Derby meeting in honour of a great horse, This does nothing to honour the horse and his achievements a complete waste of a decent meeting.

Yours and charles’ assessments sum up the negatives of the event so well for me.
I thought i was in a minority on the subject tbh. Perhaps not.

Hmmmmmm. You could be describing any big flat meeting.
August 6, 2017 at 23:24 #1313148It’s one meeting, one day a year. Nobody is forcing anyone to watch it. It’s not for me but no harm in trying something a bit different from time to time.
August 6, 2017 at 23:40 #1313150No worse than gingers idea of a Premier League………
You’re certainly not alone though Middle, it would be a very rare year if we didn’t get a thread up about it.Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
August 7, 2017 at 00:09 #1313152I suppose that you could argue that it is good for raising the profile of the sport.
That said, and perhaps it is just my age and experience, it is totally wasted on me.August 7, 2017 at 00:31 #1313153When it was announced on ITV that the Shergar Cup is on next Saturday following the end of Glorious Goodwood, the feeling I got was comparable to stepping in dog turd.

You hit the nail on the head Jac, and saved me a bit of time writing much the same. I’d add that
as a betting prospect it does nothing for me, it’s a complete waste of time IMO.August 7, 2017 at 07:02 #1313160<p abp=”372″>A fitting climax to what must be one of the dullest weeks of the year
Well I did OK at Goodwood but give me cold, wet day at Cartmel…………

, I wouldn’t put a penny on any of the horses running at Ascot on Saturday. At least it means we get a few of the top jockeys at Newmarket.Just a couple of errors in my own post and perhaps wishful thinking that Ch.4 were still in charge of racing on TV and the Grey Horse Race at Newmarket that is usually the 2nd Saturday in August is now being run on the 19th August, perhaps they didn’t want to steal the thunder of the Shergar Cup of which every single race is being shown by ITV.
Will be interesting to see their viewing figures for that day..
JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...August 7, 2017 at 12:46 #1313170It’s the one Saturday of the year where I pray for some decent weather so I can get out. I do usually have bet and watch it in half an hour later but don’t think I’ll even do that this year, weather permitting. It does get decent crowds and is good for the PR of the sport. Who knows in a few years time we may even have a LGBT team

I hadn’t thought about it before but you’re absolutely right. If the Shergar Cup was a race run on Derby day it would be very fitting indeed and a lovely testament to the great horse. I suspect 90% of those in attendance on Saturday won’t know who Shergar was and if they did I suspect it would be due to his kidnapping and not his exploits on the racecourse.
