What dya mean Jack saying JG not got good record in the race?
I read a trends preview saying to look out for John Gosden as he’d won it 3 times in the last how many years it was. Don’t compare to AOB in recent years granted but no one does.

    I ageee Mike.

Gosdens won this race 4 times since 1996 Shantou, Lucarno, Arctic Cosmos and Masked Marvel.

Winning a classic group 1 4 times in the last 22 years is not a record to be sniffed at. Classics dont come for free.

Looks a bloody good St Leger to me.

I’d really like Sir Dragonet if this was softer ground, has a very rounded (usually) soft ground action. Although ran well in the Derby on a firmish surface had time off afterwards and suspect was feeling it. The horse may remember that experience and not go on it again. imo One to oppose at current prices.

Ground at York wasn’t much different to here, so don’t understand why some are saying Logician is a doubt on it. Voltigeur victory imo as good as any three year old middle-distance horse this season and more to come judging by both previous progression and conformation. Glad am on ante-post and imo has by far the best chance. However, there is just a slight doubt about stamina (took a while to settle fully) and the value has gone now.

One I believe is very over-priced is Il Paridiso. Probably under-estimated due to going off at 20/1 last time and jockey Beggy. Beaten only 1 1/4 lengths and nose by Stradivarius and Dee Ex Bee. Getting 15 lbs (Strad’ had a penalty and rarely wins by the margin of superiority). 12 lbs from Dee Ex Bee. But IP was a three year old taking on older horses at 2m. Weight for age is rightly big at staying distances and that still an excellent effort. Truly run race so no fluke either. He’ll need a strongly run/test of stamina at this slightly reduced trip but is likely to get it (pacemakers and Gosden fav Logician’s only potential weakness is stamina). Has been prefered to many other bright St Leger candidates from this yard.

The other one I like at the prices today is Sir Ron Priestly. Real trier and races as though this trip will be right up his street. Stablemate Nayef Road is good, but seems pretty exposed now (ditto Dashing Willoughby) and this looks a good St Leger.

Technician seemed to improve last time out, but that was on a lot softer ground and needs much more here.

Western Australian has already won the St Leger, Western Austalia (no “n”) may well be used as pacemaker and little chance of emulating the 1853 winner. Isn’t good enough to stay there unless first time cheek pieces work miracles.

I’ve backed Broome (oops! NR) Logician 2.6/1 and Il Paridiso 12/1 with 11/1 saver on Sir Ron all win only. If hadn’t had any ante-post it would be the latter pair each way.

Jack, I think the beating of Constantinople was very good, think those two both have room for improvement and progression.
Boring I know but I can’t see past the fav today

    Will sir dragonet stay?

Watching the derby again he was weaker at the finish than japan, broome and AVD

couldn’t be 100% sure the fav will stay either, was a little free in the voltigeur so slight chance he could pull his chance away

Struggling to find an angle in to the race, can see if sir ron priestley or il paradiso are leading at the 2 pole they will be tough to pass

King George and arc are calling youd think

He travelled all over them and put the race to bed in a few strides

In him, headman and sangarius juddmonte have 3 potentially very good 4 year olds to look forward to

The pessimist in me wants to dwell on what has to be one of the worst runnings ever of this, but what an incredibly likeable horse. It was a smashing performance, and a pleasure to watch.

Stradivarius going to sleep easy tonight in the knowledge that he can get the hoover out for the staying races again next year.

I thought it was a very weak renewal as well Kris the two Johnston horses are tough as nails but have ultimately progressed through handicaps to being Group 3 winning horses and I suspect that’s as good as they’ll ever be. Sir Dragonet the only plausible class angle to take Logician on with blatantly didn’t stay. Take nothing away from the winner who won with any amount in hand but for me he’s not needed to improve on what he achieved in the Voltigeur. A bit early for talking about Arc’s and King George’s for me personally, lets see how he trains on next year and what the 3 year old generation looks like.

Sorry i meant recent record- was nitpicking a little but i tend to do that when a horse is that price.

Turned out not quite as good an overall renewal as it looked on paper beforehand; maybe Sir Dragonet didn’t stay or not letting himself down on the ground or not quite as good since his injury/rest. But I don’t think he was massively below form. The other one with good form Il Paradiso not quick enough, but again not massively so. Because although 2nd horse Sir Ron Priestly came up through handicaps had won a recognised trial in the Group 3 March Stakes last time. That was a similar trip to today’s but slowly run; not the test of stamina he got today. There was every reason to believe he’d improve and did; this second is at least good enough standard to win a Group 2. Third placed Nayef Road won a Group 3 too (Gordon) from the horse that also finished runner-up to Logician in the Voltigeur. tbh Nayef Road had looked pretty exposed this morning, but maybe the Constantinople form was better than given credit for. Third there has gone on to win in America. Also, this was the stiffest test of stamina he’d undertaken so – at the moment – surely worth rating as improved.

I agree Logician didn’t improve much – if at all – but Voltigeur was imo a Group 1 performance in a Group 2 anyway. Point about this horse though is he won today without doing things as he should. Didn’t settle anything like a stayer usually does. Frankie having to take back in order to get cover and giving away ground. imo Quite a bit better than distances back to the second and third suggest. With excellent conformation too, prospects of being top class at 12f next year.

Well done winners. Glad I didn’t lay him as I was tempted over the last 48 hours. Stable vibe stopped me.

Can’t agree with anyone claiming this was a good race though and even saw a few say he’s next years top mile and a half horse. Really?

I’d have Japan to beat Logician every day of the week. In fact, if they weren’t carrying a live contender in him for Longchamp, he’d have won that today imo. That being said, perhaps Japan is too good for a Leger

Logician won that so easy though. I didn’t see the race back yet but on first impressions he was the winner miles out, Frankie went easy on him, he’s surely got loads more to come next year.

I think i agree MOM, ill be cautious with this going forward, the leger, typically, doesnt work out all that well recently.

He won it well though, i cant see why they would bring him back in trip though  youd have to take him on over 12f in open G1’s!
