Very reminiscent of HTN v Raven’s Pass last year- lets hope these two renew rivalry a few more times ending at the Breeder’s Cup. Can’t help thinking Spencer would have won on Delegator though…
June 16, 2009 at 19:09 #234367Well that’s a bit silly. Paco Boy didn’t stay a mile until 1 1/2 hours ago and MCM was a neck away from losing.
Paco Boy did stay well enough but in hindsight as far as group ones go that was very, very weak the runner up Cesare probably about a 116 horse. Question is who would you back over a mile Mastercraftsman or Paco Boy? Then which one would you back over seven furlongs.
Every horse stays every trip to an extent (example Scenic Blast would beat a selling plater over a mile and a half) but its all relative and that extra bit of stamina can be the difference between winning and losing at the top level.
June 16, 2009 at 19:11 #234368Might be a different result if they meet in the Sussex stakes Goodwood is a much sharper track than Ascot. One to look forward to.
June 16, 2009 at 19:14 #234369I wouldn’t mind backing Scenic Blast in a mile and a half seller Ian- he was second in the Caulfield Guineas as a 3yo…
June 16, 2009 at 19:23 #234370Delegator can stay a mile, but from that position in-transit he was being asked too much.
I think Jimmy Fortune would’ve hoped to have been closer to Mastercraftsman (as seen on the footage), get a clear passage on the straight and wait for the 2 furlong marker to drop the handbrake.
Mastercraftsman wouldn’t have gotten away from Delegator in that instance IMO, and Delegator could have outsped him and won by a half length.

Well that’s a bit harsh. Cesare’s been beaten 1 1/2L but he was only beaten 1 1/4L by Haradasun last year.

Delegator did exactly what he did in the Guineas….came there to win his race but just didn’t quite see it through. He was simply outstayed and what we should take from this is Sea the Stars must be some horse.
Extremely doubtful Sea the Stars and Master Craftsman will ever meet which is a pit. As far as the first and second today go I can’t see Delegator ever getting the better of Mastercraftsman again.
Despite Delegator looking like a much better horse today (I take my hat of to fim) when Mastercraftsman got his head in front again it looked as if in another 100 yds he would have pulled further away from him again. He was going Delgator was stopping.
If they meet with and cut in the ground it wont bother Mastercraftsman but you would expect it to be dead against Delegator.
I don’t wear he’s a better horse with cut in the ground but I accept Delegator is a better horse when there isn’t.

Fist question for you. Do you think Delegator would beat Mastercraftsman on fast ground at Goodwood a sharper track?

I reckon they will be polar opposites on good-to-soft or worse. The Irish 2,000 Guineas has already suggested this.

Aagghh.
It was going so well until the last sentence.

I’m surprised Delegator stayed as well as he did, but not at all surprised that Mastercraftsman was all out to win.
Don’t believe for one second that he’s better on soft ground though, it just allows him to grind others into the ground quicker. The horse simply needs further, imo.June 16, 2009 at 23:16 #234442Heartbreaker

Fortune could have done without Lord Shanakill on his outside as it forced his hand a little and Delegator was checked in his run a little. There’s not much between them.
Reminds me of Henry vs Ravens last year. I would back Delegator again, given his conditions and an easier track.
Mastercraftsman may give Sea the Stars a race over 10f?

Yeah; they probably said the same about Giant’s Causeway and Sakhee
June 17, 2009 at 03:51 #234495That’s the problem when a horse comes along and does the Guineas/Derby double – the 3yo mile division has become a bit of a non-event now….STS has left the party with all the women and booze in tow

AOB made me chuckle when asked by Rishi if MCM needed 10F now (I presume he meant in order to win a G1 without the aid of a pacemaker). He [AOB] was very quick to state that MCM ran his best race over 6F on g/f and how fast he was

It’s fair to say that MCM will never run over 10f.
June 17, 2009 at 05:12 #234500I backed Evasive and wasn’t at all confiedent the way they were riding him, think it was a rethink that backfired there, would have made no probable difference but I think they should go back to front running him.
Thought the race had shades of The KGVI & QEII Stakes last year, was a fascinating race to watch, and after the race seeing Jimmy and Jamie together looking back at the race.
Still think Mastercraftsman would put a highly commendable effort in the BC Classic.
Also what did irk me was Frankie Dettori not riding out and decided to actually watch the race on the big screen, I wouldn’t have been happy if i was backing his mount.
