Sectionals show that to have been one of the most slowly-run Derbys of the modern era. A bunch of rags trying to grab some glory early doors should not disguise that fact, and those rags could not sustain the gallop for long.
The race favoured horses with a turn of foot. While I was surprised that New Approach did what he did after pulling as hard as he did, I am more than a little interested in Tartan Bearer to turn the tables on another day.
June 7, 2008 at 16:58 #167203Update from Epsom.
Kevin Manning has picked up a three day ban for careless riding after winning the Derby. He was found to have caused interference to Rio De Le Plata a furlong and a half from home.
Jim Bolger has said New Approach’s next target will be the Irish Derby on Sunday 29th June.
June 7, 2008 at 17:00 #167205That probably means it’ll be some other race then…
June 7, 2008 at 17:22 #167215I think firefox makes a good point lets not forget the horse among all the controversy.
I’d love to see a King George of New Approach, Soldier Of Fortune, Tartan Bearer and Look Here. Is it too much to ask for Peeping Fawn as well?
That would be a proper, serious King George. Thats what flat racing is all about bringing together the three year olds and the older horses, colts and fillies.
Bolger states the horse unlikely to go there I believe. Where have I heard that before? lol.

Can we also add Youmzain, Ask and Getaway (will be much better at Ascot on right-handed track)?
Now that would go some way to restoring the lustre of the King George!
June 7, 2008 at 17:47 #167222I’d be really surprised if we see New Approach run in the King George. Derby winners don’t seem to be aimed at the race anymore. He’ll probably run in one of the main 1m 2f races because dropping back in trip is the popular thing to do nowadays.

I think dropping back to 10f has been popular lately for stud reasons a Derby winner needing to show versatility. However New Approach was champion 2yo and has been second in two Guineas (one by a short head) so his versatility isn’t in question.
The ground at Ascot however will probably be too fast for New Approach to take his chance I would think.
June 7, 2008 at 18:15 #167229Triumph for the cheaters then.
For me it ruined a race i really love. It should have been about the amazing performance of both horse and Jockey instead it has left a very bitter taste in my mouth. Mr Bolger knew all along this horse would run and most likely win. Shame
Well Done however for the great performance of the horse. Beautiful animal!

In what way has Bolger cheated?
Who has cheated?
What rules of racing have been broken?

You must have been watching a different race to me Pru- Tartan Bearer will never beat New Approach who won despite everything conspiring against him today. You can have 2/1 in a match in the Irish Derby with me!

Someone involved with the Bolger camp made a killing on the mis-information even before the horse ran. That cannot be denied. Whether that can be defined as "cheating" or not is open to interpretation.

And your evidence?
June 7, 2008 at 20:21 #167254Got to say I agree with Carv regarding the future. I thought Tartan Bearer got first run too. How different it could have been when New Approach was switched to the rail if Tartan Bearer’s stablemate Dr Fremantle had just leant to the left like so many horses do in the straight at Epsom.
June 7, 2008 at 20:27 #167255To deliberately tell a lie and mislead the betting public for own gains, in my book that is cheating. He has cheated the betting public. Then to criticise them afterwards for "not being able to handle minor changes" is pretty foul.

So you are saying he lied, is still telling lies and are not accepting his explanation?
Are you also saying that you have never made a decision and then later changed your mind in light of new evidence?
How has he gained from this episode?
Or is it perfectly acceptable for you to libel an individual, and that is what you are doing in accusing him of cheating, without providing a single shred of evidence?
June 7, 2008 at 20:48 #167259I don’t think he lied to be honest or cheated, I do think he may have handled the situation better.

June 7, 2008 at 20:50 #167260Paul, I think you have to admit he is guilty of lying.
Whether anyone on his team benefited from that would be very difficult to prove, but I don’t think I will ever be buying a pre-owned car off Mr. Bolger.
