It is a wide open Derby this year, with no really outstanding colt. That said, I like Curtain Call a lot. Luca Cumani thinks the world of him and I’m sure he’ll have him spot on for the big day. I think I’ll take a chance on him … and Mr. Spencer.

Oh, and if I may …

I’ve read and heard comments recently from certain people that The Derby is just another horse race, and can’t see what all the fuss is about. :?

Hmm, that’s like saying the World Cup final is just another football match.

Himself – Maybe its just that the quality is down this year…. there are no real superstars jumping out from the 2yo / 3yo.

Looks even shorter now with the likelihood of New Approach likely to line up.

Sir Michael Stoute should be brimming with confidence about Tartan Bearer because the way he stayed on in the Dante from the back – regardless of tempo – indicated a horse raring to stay out the Epsom 12 furlongs. He’s not peaking yet, he is going forward. And like many have mentioned, it’s not going to be a world-beating Derby field.

Morning gallops don’t turn me towards any fancy for a race and although I am certain Kandahar Run is the Epsom type, I’ll have reservations.

Looks like New Approach and the Poule d’Essai des Poulains unfair also-ran of River Proud are possibles.

Curtain Call won’t disappoint me in victory but at the price it’s very off-putting.

For me it’s Casual Conquest’s race to lose and with Moore choosing Tartan Bearer, I think he’s the most likely to take advantage should Weld’s horse not come up to scratch.

Moore did not have the choice as Hills is the retained Jockey and would ride Tajaaweed no matter what. Alisdair Down was ranting in the papers about this horse yesterday saying he is burning up the gallops and is now shorter than Tartan Bearer..

My concern with Casual Conquest is he took a long time to get going in a small field and I would be concerned that something may give him the slip round tattenham corner and with a fair sized field he might lack the tactical speed and balance.

After backing thewayyouare i’m not having another bet anyway as i’m still miffed they run him in the jockey club!!!!

Seems a bit touch and go with New Approach, but i would be swerving him after two hard races. Bolger doesnt exactly take it easy with them does he?

No, he could have ridden Dr Fremantle though. I’m generally not a fan of following gallops form into races.

Agreed. I’m not a fan and they have been quoted as saying that tartan beare does nothing at home.

It would be interesting to know whether Moore would choose Tajaaweed if he had the choice. He may not ride it in its work however..

    I quite agree.

Anyone know if Mr. Fallon has ridden all three?

Strangely, I would not take Tajaaweed’s home work neccesarily as a positive. Is he showing too much speed to stay the trip? May be I am just looking for negitives as have backed the horse.

I think all three of Stoutes have a similar chance, with Tajaaweed just ahead of Tartan Bearer then Dr Freemantle. Though on the day will probably back Dr Freemantle, as punters usually go against the third string. Making it a good value bet.

Official confirmation that Casual Conquest, Dr Fremantle and Rover Proud have all been supplemented.

The horse is hype. Terrible change of stance by myself but that’s how horseracing rolls. You’re a hero one day and adhesive the next.

However it should do no harm in ruling a line through the JC for him, and Prospect Wells, High Rock etc etc

I don’t fancy either of the CCs. Curtain’s win in a Nottingham egg ‘n spoon race doesn’t amount to much and Casual is odds-against to handle Epsom, so soon was he off the bridle at Leopardstown.

I think the adddition of New Approach throws a whole different complection of the race. Admittedly the ground being softer wouldnt look to be right up the street of a horse stepping up in distance by 50% but New Approach has always looked to be a brilliant 1m2f horse in the making (should really have went french derby IMO) and if they dont go fast early on and he comes off the turn with a full tank, its hard to see anything matching him for toe, to be fair we have never seen him tire.

However, I wouldnt be too worried about casual conquest being off the bridle at leopardstown as it was only his second career run and his first in a very long while, he’s entitled not to look 100% on form, and to be fair that wasnt just a win, it was a demolition job.

Also it could be worth remembering that Curtain Call’s "trial" wasn’t actually a derby trial but just to get a run into him before the trials began, and he was due to run at Lingfield (Cumani’s provemn trial) before the ground was deemed unsuitable by cumani and he had to be scratched. There was no 3yo staying type at the time of that run that looked better, and where a few have looked better in the trials since it is pretty fair to expect that we have not seen the best of Curtain call yet, and he would appear to have evrything in his favour groundwise.

One thing which may be worth noting is that the ground at epsom is a far stretch from the ground that the Chester, Lingfield and York trials were run on.

Dont know but I’d like to see Henry Cecil win it. Not very likely granted.
