lol, thought there’d be more of a defense than that. Luca Cumani does use times, most recently he used them to point out that Purple Moon would dramatically reverse form with Manifest, from York, in the Ascot Gold Cup. He was proved correct,
in theory
, but then any old fella could have worked that out, without the need to hold a stopwatch to the tv screen. You just need to understand racing.
It amuses me endlessly, and Cumani is tongue in cheek for a reason, by the way, because he knows, like most, that times are essentially not that revealing, but something to cling too when perhaps a little unsure, even for one so experienced.
To clarify, times are worthless. But good luck with them

Funny you should say that because the only solid evidence in history is time, if someone in 30 years asks me whose better Sea The Stars or Dancing Brave then my opinion is going to be absolute worthless as is everyone else’s and the only clarification we have of comparing the two is time.
The clock doesn’t lie, name me any middle distance plater today and tell me if times didn’t mater then why wasn’t it tried in the Derby when they was 3, of course given times don’t matter who knows..you might have beaten Motivator, New Approach, Workforce on their day.
Inler was near favourite for this years 2000 Guineas, it’s time at Newmarket was nothing yet the hype and the genuine ability of this horse was to suggest he was Group 1 contender, inevitably he got run off his feet as expected and I could name you at least 4 to 5 hundred different examples of horses in 2010 that were well backed who had no chance to win because they were simply not quick enough against the opposition.
You can’t fully expect to look through a form book and be comfortable you know the limitations of every horse without time being able to categorize them, you just simply can’t.
