Wouldn’t that be nice, Ian.
What’s the chances.
Nice post.
March 8, 2022 at 08:19 #1586137Think John Lennon would have agreed with you Ian, Imagine
March 8, 2022 at 08:37 #1586138Well, with everything except the last two words. We should be doing what we can for humanity, not the global economy.
And no, the two aren’t the same thing.
March 8, 2022 at 09:03 #1586141Apologies if anyone thinks it is in bad taste but I was amused by something I saw tweeted earlier:
“Russia has already been cut off from CNN, Pornhub and Facebook. The US is now working on depriving Russians of MacDonalds and CocaCola. If they keep going with these sanctions, Russians will soon be among the healthiest, well adjusted and best informed people on the planet.”
March 8, 2022 at 09:55 #1586145That’s a hoot Cork. Tongue in cheek, but not in bad taste.
I must write that downMarch 8, 2022 at 15:45 #1586157“We should be doing what we can for humanity, not the global economy.

They are to me personally as I approach economics from a centre-left, as opppsed to purely capitalist, perspective.
But I take your point generally.

March 8, 2022 at 19:09 #1586185Lyse Doucet in Kyiv today mentioned how cold it was, and looking at the forecast for the next few days it appears it might be down to -6C or so by Friday with windchill reducing it further to -13C, which is well below the average at this time of year of around 0C
Used as they are to long, lingering-cold winters this Siberian blast will make their dire situation just that bit more dire

Invoking Churchill was genius – he’s trying every trick in the book (and a few outside it) to try to get that no-fly zone.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"March 8, 2022 at 20:01 #1586192I clocked that, even with the iffy translation Ian. You’ve got to hand it to him,
he’s made the world sit up. Question is, will they do anything?Sanctions are one thing, they will hurt but it’s not what Zalinsky wants. It’ a
horrible situation, we’ve got 2 bad options. We do nothing, other than sanctions,
which the Russians will manage with for the time they are likely to need to take
control, or we help and increase the chances of escalating this way beyond a war
between Russia and Ukraine. I fear that his cry for help will fall on deaf ears. It’s a pity that Boris in an untrustworthy lying piece of sh%t, because I thought
he responded well, in as far as he sounded the part, but I don’t want to give
Zalensky false hope. I fear he will be left to get on with it whilst the west
watch him, and a lot of brave people fall. It’s horrible to see, but they are on their own. God help them.
March 8, 2022 at 20:33 #1586196At least the American’s have announced an embargo on Russian oil and gas and whilst Biden generously acknowledged that it would be easier for the USA to withstand than if Europe did the same, I really do feel we should, and be prepared to withstand the hardship it will bring; but nothing remotely like the hardship in Ukraine
I’m sure many on here recall the energy crises of the early ’70s: three-day weeks, powercuts, fuel shortages; we staggered through them and can do so again
What is actually more concerning to me in the longer term is the likely food shortages if the wheat crop in Ukraine is next to non-existant this year, plus the unavailablity of the sanctioned Russian crop. Together they produce 25% of the world’s wheat

What do you want Boris to do, BigG?
Seems to me as though Boris is doing pretty much all he can without doing anything tantermount to declaring war.
With Poland giving planes to Ukraine we’ll see if Russia responds by attacking Polish airfields
If so, attacking Poland (a NATO country) could bring WWIIII anyway.Value Is EverythingMarch 8, 2022 at 21:46 #1586203“he(Zalensky)’s trying every trick in the book (and a few outside it) to try to get that no-fly zone”.
For “no-fly zone” read WWIII, Ian.
Zalensky knows very well that if NATO fly their own planes against Russia it will start WWIII… Zalensky is rightly desperate for a no-fly zone to help the bombardment on Ukraine… But Zalensky also knows his / Ukraine’s best chance is for WWIII. Can’t blame him for that.

————————————————————————————Is your life simply about attack these days Ginge. Did you read all of my post
because any reasonable person would realise that I said Boris did as much as he
could, which is to show moral support. I made it clear that neither he nor the west
could get involved. For Christ’s sake, I even said I thought Boris responded well,
something I’ve never said in my life before. You’re argueing about something that’s not even there, and by the way what happened
to a response to this utter gutter smear against me yesterday based on nothing! ………..“I wouldn’t say you’re pro Putin at all, BigG.
Just more inclined than most TRFers to believe Putin’s propaganda and / or rhetoric.”My response was…………
“I wouldn’t say you’re pro Putin at all, BigG.
Just more inclined than most TRFers to believe Putin’s propaganda and / or rhetoric.”Give me 1 example Ginger
——————————————————————————-Not a dickie. What the hell is happening with you Ginge, we’ve disagreed about many
a subject, sometimes at great length, but always with respect for the others view.
Recently, and I could dig them out, I’ve had to say “this is low for you Ginge”,
or “this is beneath you”, something I’ve not had to do in the years we’ve been in
here.Again, this one is below you Ginge, or at least unlike you to paint an unfair reflection
of a post just to get a dig in. Can we please have the old Ginge back.March 9, 2022 at 11:33 #1586225With Poland giving planes to Ukraine we’ll see if Russia responds by attacking Polish airfields
It’s not clear to me what the plan is. Presumably these ageing Mig-29s are sitting on Polish airfields, so why did the Poles ask the USA if they could first be flown to airbases in Germany: a request undertsandably given short-shrift by the Americans
If they are to stay in Poland do they want Ukrainian pilots – who are trained to fly Migs – to creep across the border and fly the planes back into Ukraine, or are NATO pilots to fly them in
Or are they to be transported by road/rail – if that’s in any way feasible – thereby making them just other additions to NATO’s ‘supply of armaments’ to the Ukrainians, and by so-doing not risking Putin construing it as an ‘attack’ by NATO forces
March 9, 2022 at 11:43 #1586227Please calm down BigG and look at the sentence you wrote. Am not “attack”ing you.
Reason why I quoted that sentence is precisely because it did not fit with your very next paragraph praising Boris. Making it unclear what you meant.“I fear that his cry for help will fall on deaf ears”.
“fall on deaf ears” means it will be ignored.
If you “fear” Zalensky’s cry for help will be ignored then you’re implying his cry for help should have a different reaction from Boris than what it has…I was confused by that sentence Which was why I asked the question “what do you want Boris to do”?
Fair enough, you’ve now answered and I will now ignore the “fall on deaf ears” sentence.I’ll get back to you on the “more inclined than most TRFers to believe Putin’s propaganda and / or rhetoric” when I have more time. But it was in no way a “dig” either. Indeed, if you look at the post I was responding to, I was actually trying to speak up for you, by saying “I wouldn’t say you’re pro Putin at all, BigG”.
Can we have the old BigG back please.
