It now transpires Johnny told Willie in the car park yesterday that the Duke is the best horse in Ballydoyle – so to dismiss this form as useless is a tad harsh – especially since Finsceal Beo did her bit for the form yesterday.
And even better considering Aidan has the best miler he’s ever trained in the stable…

The Duke must be the best 10f horse of the last 20 years?!
June 18, 2008 at 19:16 #169142Duke of Marmalade made an ordinary Group 1 field look ordinary. He is a top class horse no doubt, but I’d be offering some caution before falling for the rose-tinted Ballydoyle appraisal he received after the race.
June 18, 2008 at 19:30 #169144According to team O’Brien Duke Of Marmalade is the best horse in their stable – one day after Henrythenavigator was the best horse since Rock Of Gibraltar etc.
Pinch of salt springs to mind.
As I predicted the Duke and Phoenix Tower filled the first two places but it wasn’t as close as I thought it would be, Phoenix Tower possibly best at a mile???
The rest of the top horses – Sixties Icon, Ask are best over further. Not the strongest ten furlong Group 1 IMO. You could argue the only genuine Group 1 10f horse in the race won the race.
June 18, 2008 at 19:37 #169145A brilliant result on the e/ws in he queen mary basically saved me having a sh*t one today.
Majestic Roi is looking a shadow of the horse she was last year.
Calming influence was terrible in the first. He may be a horse who finds his form and then a target and not the other way around. Couldnt be confident we have seen anything in the jersey stakes that would trouble the st james palace or the golden jubilee runners.
Phoenix Tower was a pretty big negative pre race and he managed second in the prince of wales but Duke Of Marmalade done it fairly easy, so hard to know how that form will work out. I think the horses are there in abundance for an amazing eclipse this year but I’ll bet that most wont go, and I imagine the duke will probably get an easy time of it again. I think the bbc over reacted to the strength of DOMs win, and talk of the arc looked completely ludicrous.
Bankable never got into the royal hunt cup from where he as ridden and may be one for next time along with the fourth horse. How often do these handicap good things get turned over? It was pretty easy to fancy mr aviator in the pre race market though as he was pretty much the only thing being backed against bankable with any purpose.
Another good days racing but not up to the class shown on day one IMO.
June 18, 2008 at 20:33 #169149Biggest disapointment of the day for me was Danehill Destiny in the Queen Mary when plum last was her outcome.Totally baffled as to the bad run and can only assume she was off colour.
June 18, 2008 at 20:38 #169150Didn’t look to be enjoying the fast ground to me. Must admit I got sucked in when she touched 5/1.
June 18, 2008 at 20:42 #169152Hope that is the reason,Looks a horse to follow bar todays run.
June 18, 2008 at 20:50 #169153I’m afraid the highlight for me today was Simon Holt’s spoonerism when attempting to say ‘wins the Hunt Cup’. Reason in itself for watching ATR.
June 18, 2008 at 20:57 #169154Three group ones in two days at the same track. My God, where is everybody?Where is Henry and Stoutey and the "Boys in Blue"? First Epsom now this!Looking forward to the Irish Derby. Will King of Rome redeem himself to morrow or was Murtagh that poor a judge when he picked this horse to ride in the Derby? Is a win for Yeats too much to ask? Is Soldier of Fortune better than Marmalade with 3 group ones already this year?Looking forward to improvement in all of Aidans horses as the season goes by. Remember DT got one race every month from May on.
June 19, 2008 at 01:14 #169174Coolmore have a very good bunch of older horses. But Henry apart, their three year olds look if anything below Godolphins.
Halfway to Heaven won a poor Irish 1000. Washington Irving and some unexposed sorts might yet come through for the Leger.
Value Is EverythingJune 19, 2008 at 04:24 #169178i would not close the door on the coolmore 3yos until after the irish derby.!
June 19, 2008 at 12:31 #169250I thought Wankable ran well in the Hunt Cup. The draw patently did make a difference. This horse has a wicked turn of foot and all things being equal, ie: draw & pace of the race, I think he will hose up on his future outings.
Those that backed him can recoup their losses on his next run.
I still maintain that this horse will win group races, and a group one will come his way in time. He is physically well buff.
I’m def gonna get stuck in next time, subject to wonga fund etc

Like the new nickname!
June 19, 2008 at 15:12 #169288Good win from Michita there.
Cape Amber didn’t do herself any favours going down to post looking more than a handful for Alan Munro.
Didn’t settle at all during the race either.
