A couple of winners at fontwell and, given the competitve handicaps, glad to get Hacker Des Places thrird rated at 10/1.

A well clear top in the National, with a large group within 7lbs of second rated. If Eclair Surf clicks over the jumps he has the race at his mercy on the figures. My picks of the top ratings are given on the Grand National thread in the Big Race Discussions section.

On Sunday there’s a fascinating looking contest at Wincanton with only 3lbs pslitting five.

Struggle for winners in recent days, balanced up by the one winner Sam Brown coming in at 28/1.

A bit tardy with today’s ratings but here in time. Pontefract contest looks a very decent sprint and early field sizes on the turf looking very good.

On Tuesday there’s a decent sprint contest at Newmarket. Big issues are balancing up fitness and transferring all-weather form, but it’s a transition tiem so always worth taking a bit of care.

Rather tasty looking Musselburgh fixture on Saturday for me to take in before going off to Gloucester to pick up a Severn Cruise boat for a few days holiday. We are in Worcester for an evening…, but sadly doesn’t correspond with the evening of the race meeting! Missing the Perth Festival, but we had this booked a couple of years back and it’s only going ahead now Covid restirctions have eased. We need the break!

    MONDAY APRIL 11

Rayong 13/2 put the top rated not far off breaking even for the season, and the second rated on that occasion Ey Up It’s Maggie could be interesting if pulled out again at Beverley tomorrow. Busy day tomorrow despite the only Newmarket handicap not having enough handicap form to generate worthwhile figures.

A busy weekend with plenty of competitive handicaps. I’ll be interested to Soapy Stevens in the paddock at Musselburgh as a line through a siginficant improver has him well clear in the Queen’s Cup.

Note anything that runs in the Royal Mile Handicap at 1.32, often throws up a few who can go on to win handicaps.

Three winners yesterday, a couple of nice ones at Carlisle where the previously frustrating but nevertheless talented Silva Eclipse olbiged at 6/1. Gweedore was joint top at Musselburgh on a really competitive card. Nice to see a good few youngsters taking a real interest in the racing at Mussleburgh, with one young lad in my earshot giving a particular insightful view of the horses in the paddock.

Not quite the tsunami of race action that there once was on Easter Monday, but nevertheless a good few races to keep us interested. Sad that the Rosebery Handicap has been reduced to a ‘Series Qualifier’ these days.

A lot of effort for next to nothing with yesterday’s ratings. A real struggle with only one top rated getting their head in front.

Mainly small fields for the start of the week and I’ve got a couple of tick over days before my 100th visit to Kelso on Wednesday. Averaging 7 climbs to the top of the stand every meeting that’s a fair bit of climbing!

    MONDAY MAY 2

3.55 Malystic 148; Sir Tivo 147; Diego Du Charmil 146; Return Ticket 146

4.01 Excel Power 94; Fox Power 94; Via Serendipity 93

    Warwick
4.45 Dino Velvet 140; Rockstar Ronnie 136; Golden Taipan 126

Red Happy could be interesting in the Norfolk National at Fakenham on Tuesday. Been in good from but only tried at an extreme trip once, though he did go well for a fair way in testing conditions at Exeter. David Pipe has done well with staying chasers in recent times.

    TUESDAY MAY 3

    Fakenham
4.15 Red Happy 133; Abaya Du Mathan 129; Goodnight Charlie 129; Havana Hermano 128

Some interesting racing on Wednesday and Thursday. Rouge Vif holds the key to a 4 runenr contest at Newton Abbot, I don’t have a rating for him but if he’s anywhere near his best he’ll carry these. That said, he’s not been as good since moving to Paul Nicholls.

Potential best bet at Chester looks to be Night On Earth on Thursday. Drawn well enough in 4, coming off good all-weather from and a solid effort at Newmarket.

The 5 runner chase at Kelso will no doubt be the subject of much discussion by the rooftop cognescenti. Various angles on this one, many ifs and buts, and not easy to crack.

I see that Little Glenshee has had another gorgeous foal. Such a relief after the recent heartbreaking fatalities with brood mares.I must check if any of her progeny have achieved anything of note.

Moehat, they would be aimed at jump racing so any foals would only now being going into training. None have run as yet. The line should be interesting as Little Glenshee was a foal of the Alexander’s prolific dam Harrietfield, Clan Legend now 12 being the one still flying her flag.

Well done with Romeo Brown. I’m glad I actually backed him because I forgot to check your ratings before the race. Much as I follow the Kirby horses they do seem to improve when they move to other stables. And I’ve been following Ann Duffields hurdlers recently. We visited her stable when we stayed at Middleham a few years ago so took an interest when she started entering horses over the jumps. I read that she was taking on horses to freshen them up. Seems to be working!
