I’m glad I backed Real World the other day because I would have been annoyed with myself for not checking out this thread that particular day. I love handicaps more than any other races and he was my top rated horse too. I don’t study the form much these days as I get too engrossed and don’t get anything else done so I’m quite parasitic and just check out what other people have picked, along with looking for steamers on oddschecker. Thoroughly enjoying Ascot this week. But can’t wait to be back at Kelso one day! Good luck tomorrow.
June 18, 2021 at 19:02 #1546419Significantly just held on in the last today at 10/1 and gives the top rated a comfortable profit at Royal Ascot.
A very quiet Saturday with only 5 qualifying races.

Low key cards early this week htough Ayr’s card on Tuesday lincludes the Land O’ Burns Stakes which I have previewed on the ‘Big Races Discussion’ Section of TRF. Worth bearing in mind that we have had very little rain up here in recent days and ground no slower than good is almost certain.
MONDAY JUNE 21
Windsor
7.00 Be Prepared 98; Zim Baby 94; Indian Creak 92; Ishvara 92Not the most gripping contest but BE PREPARED is of interest stepped up in class. She won a Class 5 event two runs ago then lost her chance at the start last time in Class 4. This is another step up but there’s a hint from her earlier career that she can cope at this level and may be worth a chance here. The likely favourite Zim Baby has gone close twice at this level, but neither event looked strong.
TUESDAY JUNE 22
Ayr
2.35 Bravado 106; Royal Advice 90; Whittle Le Woods 87
Newton Abbot
7.45 Pilbara 143; Darling Maltaix 140; Umndeni 139h; Thistle Do Nicely 116h – The h suffix indicates two horses with hurdles handicap form but no recent chase handicap form.June 22, 2021 at 15:43 #1547315A decent day for handicaps in the middle of the week. I’ve included the Carlisle Bell and Cumberland Plate since quality of runner puts htese comfortably at Class 3 level. The Bell at 3.30 is notably close with one a few ponuds clear, though below form last time, though most within a few pounds.
WEDNESDAY JUNE 23

Single top selection in each race is around break even point for the year after today’s racing as results continue to provide encouragement.
Just a couple of qualifying races today before the action ramps up for Northumberland Plate meeting on Saturday.

3.50 Lady Pendragon 99; Almareekh 88; Quenelle D’Or 86June 26, 2021 at 16:54 #1547987Had to rely on handicap snip of the day Oo De Lally to avoid a blow out. Bit frustrating that Galata Bridge was restrained on this occasion so that tactics negated a good draw, but he seemed not to stay anyway. Rajinsky ran from a wide draw but managed to get prominent early and ran a decent race. My selection Blow Your Horn did well to get so close from a hold up ride in the Vase, Zeeband the winenr was in the mix on my figures.
Decent jump racing card at Uttoxeter tomorrow.

The handicap programme does tend to be biased toward the end of the week and in particular Saturdays at this time of year. Here are the ratings for the next two days.

1.55 Thahab Ifraj 132; Chez Hans 125; Esprit De Somoza 116I’ll update results once the month is finished, but pleased to say that Single Top rated (i.e. clear top or highest in the weights if equal) is not far short of a break even position for the half year and gives a return of around 97% at SP since start last year. That’s very decent from one selection in every race at this level and goes some way to indicating how reliable form is overall in top level handicaps.
Noticeable difference between UK and Irish racing is that taking the best priced of the top 3 significantly improves performance in Ireland but the issue is marginal in England. There are a number of possible reasons but I suspect this is because less racing means it’s easier for the Irish handicapper to keep tabs on horses and that the market reflects those suited to the prevailing conditions.
July 1, 2021 at 09:15 #1548607No top rated winners this week so single top at the mid point of the year shows 118 winners from 697 races (16.9%) with returns of 682.82 at SP. June repeated last year’s good results, 19 wins from 124 and returns of 139.25 though we are comparing with an odd month last year after the lay-off. Selections 5lbs or more clear are showing a profit, but returns and results are very volatile and percentage winenrs ismilar to overall figures.
Winners from top three are holding up well at 47.3%, but field sizes have been disappointing outside the main meetings and it’s no great achievement to get in winner top 3 when there is only a handful of runners in a race. It’s a much pushed argument, but there is a case for saying htat even at upper level of handicaps there is too much racing. The upcoming Newmarket/Ascot/York weekend really is rather irritating as it concentrates the top action in one lump.

8.00 Bollin Joan 93; Urban Violet 89; Kettle Hill 86; Leopardo 81July 5, 2021 at 12:53 #1549304A lull in action with just the one race tomorrow and nothing on Wednesday, though the action picks up with Newmarket July Meeting starting Thursday. That said the one contest rated is a fair sprint at Pontefract. Had to correct the ratings as I misread Hey Jonesy’s rating as 107 on my notes. He’s actually joint top on 101 in a tight event where close up Aberama Gold might find conditinos to suit.
We have had a fair bit of rain in the last couple of days so going will soften certainly in the north. We are sitting awaiting a roofer to repair a leak and just glad we weren’t in Edinburgh as they had serious flash flooding yesterday. I was up a ladder clearing debris out of the gutter at 2.30am!
