A- Double-chinned chancer who got lucky thanks to the patronage of PB? Or…
B- A great trainer who fully deserves his success?
A- for me[nap]
January 20, 2007 at 05:48 #36290Undoubtably B.
Madness to think otherwise IMO.
January 20, 2007 at 07:13 #36291No question, Paul Nicholls is a great trainer.
A petty and vindictive statement, inspired by envy and, no doubt, fuelled by excess.:o
January 20, 2007 at 09:07 #36293Jilly,
Yes your of course correct.
All down to pure luck and he does not have a clue!
All down to some Irish jockey with an unusual christian name!
All down to not bothering to understand and take advantage of race conditions when entering his runners!
All down to not schooling his horses hour after hour and leaving everything to chance!
All down to shrewd owners that have just decided to place horses with him when they know hes useless!
Thats why he has progressed from his 15 horses (that were not that good) to become champion trainer for another season.
I can find a lot of money to back him on betfair to be champion trainer this year if you wish to lay him!
get a life
January 20, 2007 at 09:09 #36294That’s sad jilly.
January 20, 2007 at 10:04 #36295Hello,
What on earth was that post for ??
There is absolutely no reason why constructive critisism should not be aired on the forum, when sensibly supported.
So come on Jilly let’s read your comments on why you don’t like the guy or his training techniques !!
Oh, by the way being a proud owner of multiple chins, I am quite offended !! :) :) ÂÂÂ

January 20, 2007 at 14:43 #36296I’m not saying that the guy can’t train!I’m saying that he got the breaks-which we all need in life-Put,say,Emma Lavelle in charge now, would she have more winners at the end of the season than PN would have had?Or less? Or maybe,i would suspect, about the same.
Good luck to the guy,but i don’t have to like him.
People who end a post with…’Get A Life’ are the ones that need to do just that. IMHO!
January 20, 2007 at 15:17 #36297Its easy to train a few nice horses….its hard to train a lot of them. I cant see what luck really has to do with it…he is obviously good with people and has built up good patrons from that but the results just keep coming.
I dont have to like him either but he is the top professional trainer in the UK at the moment and thats more fact than opinion
SHL
January 20, 2007 at 15:19 #36298Find it hard to understand why anyone would dislike him. Treats the punters (and owners too i would guess) with real respect
whats the problem?
Also because hes a very straightforward character whos exceptionally clear headed, people dont hang the mysterious genius tag on him…
Great trainer
January 20, 2007 at 15:25 #36299Most trainers could win with the likes of Azertyuiop, Denman, Gungadu etc. it’s the miracle he seemingly worked on Call Equiname, Young Devereux and the wins he’s managed to get out of the quirky/aging horses such as Earthmover etc. which get him the plaudits.
Though as Jilly says he wouldn’t be where he is now without the patronage of Paul Barber (which Nicholls himself admits freely and on a regular basis).
FWIW I felt he could have done better with Ask The Natives :)
January 20, 2007 at 15:39 #36300Jilly,
Betfair forum beckons I would suggest.
January 21, 2007 at 00:35 #36301bear,
Good idea,I’m off there now to start a thread…
The Top Ten NH Trainers-EVER!
PN won’t be in it
January 21, 2007 at 08:34 #36302Jilly
Paul Nicholls as I have already stated has got to become champion trainer without any financial suppport from his family. His father was a policeman.
Paul (and his wife at the time ) Bridget started with just 15 moderate horses.
He is now in the postion to turn away horses as the yard is full.
Owners such as Harry Fidlay, Paul Barber and Andy Stewart are in a postion to more or less buy any national hunt prospect they wish but they rely on Paul and his team to get the results.
I wonder why?
I dont know if you back horses or not but over the past 4 years following trends from the Ditcheat team have made massive level stake profits. Most of the value has gone now though as everyman and his dog (excluding Jilly) know how good a trainer he is.
You cannot compare Emma Lavelle to Paul Nicholls.
I treat Emma’s Cottage Stable runners with a great deal of caution as there have been many occasions where the stewards have noted ‘non triers’ and many other ‘non triers’ they dont notice!
Emma Lavelle used to work for Toby Balding but it was her fathers money ( a well respected Harley Street surgeon) that set her up.
January 21, 2007 at 13:22 #36303Nicholls’ situation is not dissimilar to that of Aidan O’Brien. People see them training expensive horses and argue that any reasonably competent trainer could win races with such raw material, forgetting that they’ve earned the opportunity by demonstrating in the past their training abilities with much less promising types. In training terms, neither Nicholls or O’Brien were born with silver spoons in their mouths and they’re at the top of the ranks by dint of their own efforts. There seems to be an undercurrent around Nicholls which suggests he’s not all that likeable an individual but I wouldn’t know about that and he is certainly open and cooperative with the media. I suspect O’Brien would be the same but the nature of his job sometimes demands discretion on his part. He’s clearly a decent chap, though.
January 21, 2007 at 13:54 #36304I’ve only met Paul Nicholls briefly so, although he was very pleasant, can’t really comment on how likeable he is. I have, however, been lucky enough to visit the yard a couple of times. Both visits were on an ordinary day, in the afternoon, when all the lads and lasses were around, mucking out and generally tidying up. The atmosphere in the yard was great and the staff seemed happy and relaxed, which in turn, I think transmitted to the horses. We spoke to quite a lot of the lads and lasses (and do so on a regular basis at the races) and a number of them talked about the opportunities they are given to ride in p-t-p’s and about the horses they have been given from the yard. The first time we went, Young Devereux had just retired and gone to live with one of the lasses. Likeable or not, I think PFN must be far from a bar-steward to work for!

January 21, 2007 at 14:00 #36305Oh, and on the original subject , there are, if you think about it, many successful people in racing who have had a fair bit of help to get there, one way or another.
For example, Martin Pipe would never have achieved as much as he did without the enormous amount of money his father put into the business. ÂÂÂ
