Certainly makes sense Ela Re lining up near front though no sign of Harvey leading him in !
One of the classics of recent times has to be the race in which Percussionist made his debut over fences at Wetherby. Harvey went down to the start to lead Ela Re in, on the opposite side of a fence to the rest of the field by the start to give him a bit of space, yet there was still a false start (down to the crap starter). Harvey went ballistic as Ela Re dropped his pygmy then galloped loose for a while.
Utterly priceless – but not as much as the comments on RUK from that dopey mare Emma Ramsden who commented that "a flat jockey wouldn’t have fallen off it like that"……erm, hello?!?!?!?!??! I’ve lost track of the amount of cheese nibblers that have fallen off horses shortly after passing the post as they have only their big toes in the iron and the horse has flicked an ear, thus dislodging them from the plate. Goodwood is great for it – I’ve seen many a nibbler dumped there!
BTW – as a postscript to the Ela Re Wetherby story, I had mu absolute cobblers on Percussionist (gowan the Cush!!!) that day and had told the boys in work that they must duck the animal at any cost.

January 27, 2008 at 12:56 #138120If richard is right that the horse is Goldan Jess then, should we eventually access a race replay, it shouldn’t be too difficult to identify. Goldan Jess was noted as blundering badly at the first and riderlo st an iron, then hanging right down the back straight.

Definitely wasn’t Goldan Jess whose pink and white colours can be seen midfield early, and at the back down the back straight.
My net speed is lousy as well so was very difficult to follow, but I think(!) the horse is Stellenbosch trained by Charlie Mann and ridden by Kevin Tobin. Seems to be a bay gelding which tallies with his b g description. A close look at the picture suggests he’s wearing a tongue tie, and since the winner and already identified Speed Venture were the only others wearing this equipment it probably confirms it’s Stellenbosch. The race comments certainly tally with where I noted the gelding running.
Others may be able to confirm this….or alternatively prove I’m a rotten detective!

February 1, 2008 at 10:42 #139411Thought I recognised him.
Have met Mr. Tobin at a Charlie Mann stable visit.Looks a lot like him.
In fact I am almost certain it is him.
Archie, does the photo show the jockey has a skin condition around the jaw area? Can’t quite see from my computer. If it does it is definately him.
Good work Rob
