That Postponed was very very impressive!!

Just spare a thought for Luca Cumani who nurtured and took the softly softly approach with this horse!!
And the one that won the handicap on the all weather looks useful too!!

Not that I am biased but one of my dogs is called Luca after the aforementioned!!

When’s James Willoughby’s birthday? I’ll buy him five minutes alone with Postponed in a dark stable somewhere.

Just the one winner but I really loved the way he did it..pure class.
Andrea Atzeni gave Postponed a great ride.
Disappointing run from Frosted in The Dubai Cup (especially for the pick 6 Channel 4 punter who had £10,000 riding on him).
California Chrome was a well deserved winner especially with that slipped saddle that thankfully held out to the end.
Great days racing and the prizepool…phenomenal :good:

I could of done with Ertijaal.
Hanagan is making any excuses but I thought he was a stride slow out the gate which (could) of made a difference.

A word of warning on Vazirabad who won the stayers race.

Bookmakers cut him into 8/1 from 12/1, and he is as low as 5/1 with some for the Ascot Gold Cup.

However, the trainer is adamant that the horse will be dropped in trip, rather than upped, and the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud at the end of June was mooted as his target, rather than Ascot, which is surely too close in the calendar to entertain running in both contests.

I don’t see Vazirabad in the betting for the Arc De Triomphe anywhere but I would have thought that success in the race won by Treve at Saint-Cloud last year would make it almost mandatory for the horse to be aimed at Chantilly, which is hosting the Longchamp race this season.

In a wide open Arc I wouldn’t be ruling Vazirabad out too readily, especially if the going were very testing.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

I think it’ll be a long hard year from Vazirabad from now onwards. The Arc is a long way from Saturday’s performance, when he scrambled home at his optimum trip ahead of a Cup horse.

That Saint-Cloud race is often quite an uncompetitive affair, but good eggs like Gailo Chop and old Cirrus Des Aigles could turn up there. Maybe a Ballydoyle pothunter like Highland Reel would be considered too.

I wouldn’t fancy Vazirabad against any of those (maybe you would). Even if he ground out a win from those second division horses, first quotes for the Arc would probably underprice him with the three-year-old pecking order still to be revealed. Weight for age, yo.

Nothing succeeds like success though and the trainer is convinced that this horse will be better over shorter trips. He holds this horse in high regard and has had enough good ones over the years to be a good enough judge.

Alain De Royer Dupre said Vazirabad had a bad journey over to Meydan, so the horse has done well to win in those circumstances.

We don’t actually have three year old to put forward as an Arc possible yet. There are well bred ones like Midterm and Zarak being put forward but it is guesswork with them and they are maiden winners for now.

Foundation was beaten in the Racing Post Trophy but is still the Derby favourite. He is not certain to stay and the odds are against him being an instant replacement for Golden Horn. Aidan O’Brien had half a dozen heading the Derby betting last season but ended up sending three barges to Epsom, the best of whom Giovanni Canaletto didn’t make the frame and was only third in the recent Hong Kong Derby.

This could easily turn out to be a mediocre year for 3yo horses and with current odds of 12/1 the field for the Arc, it’s hardly as if there is a solid favourite setting an intimidating standard.

As to the Meydan race itself, I doubt there are many staying types who could have made up the ground Vazirabad did in catching Big Orange. The Michael Bell horse very much had the best sit in the race and held what was probably an unassailable advantage 9 times out of 10 going into the closing stages. For me, Vazirabad quickened well from what looked an improbable position and he looks above the average dour plodder that often contests the cup races.

My early Arc selection was New Bay at 12/1 and until I see something from the 3yo crop, I remain happy that last year’s 3rd will be hard to beat this year, especially with cut in the ground.

Vazirabad just seems a dark horse who may yet end up in the race and if I could get a big price now I would risk a couple of quid.

Highland Reel was put in his place by Postponed and if he were my horse I would be dropping him to 10f, as I am not convinced he gets a mile and a half fully. Gailo Chop may show up at Saint-Cloud but I would be confident Vazirabad would beat him. Gailo Chop was stuffed on Saturday, has never won at as far as a mile and a half and he has a lower rating than Vazirabad, who possesses more scope. I’ll take a match bet with you if they meet!

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

My antepost bet on California Chrome and Ryan Moore on Real Steel made my day, apart from that is was good racing to watch and Chromie a worthy winner of the highlight of day.
Highland Reel was a disapointment and folded much to early.
Well done training job from Doug Watson, 1-2-3 in the Godolphin Mile

    Best Wishes
