Although the bare form isn’t up to much, he’s shaped like he’s retained as close to all of his ability as makes no difference. A third King George looks a bit of a foregone conclusion now IMO.
November 2, 2008 at 00:10 #187490As a devout Kauto fan I have high hopes for him this season. Today was a good run as he jumped and travelled well. I expect (hope) that Kauto will build from this by winning the Betfair Chase and King George. However, the big question can only be answered at Cheltenham come March – can he beat Denman? It will take a monumental effort to overcome the Tank in the GC (imo) but if any horse can do it Kauto can. Let us hope they both line up fit and well

So early in the season and I’m already thinking about the Gold Cup!
November 2, 2008 at 00:36 #187496The form of the race is worth nothing…but the performance was there, and the swagger was back…. Onwards to gold cup…
November 2, 2008 at 00:55 #187501Beat nothng, but jumped well and cruised round. RW would have won by more if hadn’t taken wide route between 3rd and 2nd last.
We now know he is fit, but not much else.
November 2, 2008 at 03:44 #187523Ladbrokes were obviously impressed, they were top price 7/1 a few months ago and are now 2/1 shortest for the Gold cup.

Ladbrokes are living on their reputation these days. The people who made that reputation are currently donning carpet slippers.
November 2, 2008 at 04:21 #187530Considering he was never out of a canter, travelled and settled as well as I have ever seen him 2/1 could still be generous as Denman is after all still on a recovery mission.
That 2/1 most likely won’t be there if he wins he Betfair and the King George with Denman is still in his box.
Not suggesting for a moment anyone takes the price but it will be interesting to see what happens

Oh you couldn’t of been more impressed with Kauto today, he woke up out of his bed today and hit the racecourse, canterd around some good yardsticks and picked up 60k. Amazing performance and exhibition of jumping and he wasnt even out of breath could of probally trounced that field again even if they was fresh. Just going to be staggering to see what he can do when he’s actually asked to go win his race. Denman im sorry but you can’t live with a Kauto Star in this shape.. sorry old buddy
November 2, 2008 at 04:54 #187536I’d second that if it wasn’t for the fact Cheltenham is just about the toughest course in the world. So he will have to be at his very best to beat Denman.
He put up a performance of a lifetime in the King George last year and if anything was at his peak for too long before the Gold Cup.
If PN sticks to his guns and does not send him to Ascot again then I think we will see a rae to savour wih Kauto Star proving he is the best we have seen in many a year.
Long way off but you are right that was some performance and probaly his best ever seasonal debut he has had.
November 2, 2008 at 14:13 #187552I would not have expected anything less of KS yesterday if he is to be considered as a serious prospect this season.
He beat nothing, but it was a faultless display for a first race of the season, he never got out of first gear until 2 out, I thought ruby was having a kip on the first circuit.
November 2, 2008 at 14:19 #187553I can’t believe some of the hyperbole in this thread.
He beat a sub-standard field, at a hack canter.
The Listener ran below par and the others more or less to their marks – a 50/1 donkey "running on" to take second pace is not exactly inspirational form.
All it told us was the horse seems to be fit and well and has seemingly overcome whatever was affecting him towards the end of last season – which is good news for everyone (apart for his future rivals).
Just a case of job done and it should freshen him up for Haydock in three weeks time, a race he should again take with ease.
And before some people deliberately start mis-interpreting what I am saying as wishing the horse to lose, nothing could be further from the truth. I am just looking at the run without rose tinted spectacles.
The sport needs horses like Kauto Star and Denman.
November 2, 2008 at 14:25 #187554Everyone appreciates Kauto beat nothing.
But it was the way he travelled yesterday – seemed full of zest. Last season bar the King George, he didn’t travel particularly well in his races. Reports from the Nicholls horse seem to infer the horse has come back a different horse after the summer break and that was reflected in the manner of victory yesterday.
Roll on Haydock.
November 2, 2008 at 15:06 #187561If Denman has another heart scare he’ll be out for the season if not for good. Given that Kauto has just Denman to beat and Neptune probably only has two to beat if’ve taken a decent slice of the 3’s and 9’s available on each for the Gold Cup this morning. Could be very decent value come March.
November 2, 2008 at 16:09 #187570Great to see KS back on track yesterday. There will be tougher races ahead, but it was good to see him cruise round without having to come off the bit.
His biggest task will be the GC against hopefully a fully fit Denman and maybe even Neptune Collonges if he improves with being the youngest of the trio. KS will have to jump better at Cheltenham in the GC though than he did this year. He made 7 mistakes on the final circuit, some more serious than others. Does 7 mistakes equal the 7 lengths he was beat? Hopefully the ground will be decent enough as well and not the over watered ground you sometimes get.
November 2, 2008 at 16:48 #187578I thought Kauto Star looked mightily impressive yesterday. I know he beat a field of old plodders and an out of sorts The Listener, but nevertheless, he did it in style. Maybe the sheepskin noseband helped ?

I think he will canter up in his next two outings at Haydock and Kempton, but the Gold Cup is quite a different ball game altogether – and should a revitalised and fit Denman turn up ready to rumble once again, then…

November 2, 2008 at 17:48 #187600Brough Scott, in the Telegraph, reports KS as being ‘back and better than ever’. Quite how that can be inferred from a race that told us nothing other than that the horse is relatively fit and well I’m not sure.
You’d have to be happy with the way he looked/performed yesterday but in terms of assessing whether he is better/worse than the tail end of last season it told us zip.
November 2, 2008 at 18:57 #187604Corm….its not all about form.. The horse looked like he had his confidence back, and he looked delighted to be back in work. If they stick to his reduced campaign this season, I’ll be expecting a win come Gold Cup day.
