The filly won well, and deservedly so, but what a terrible name for a classic winner. Don’t you think ? Surely the owners could have shown more imagination ?
Ok, maybe they thought she’d end up running in a seller.

Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
June 7, 2008 at 08:49 #167064It’s not that bad. I almost threw a boot through the TV screen when a Group 1 mile race where the top three in betting were between 6/4 and 4/1 and the next elect was 20/1 – and the winner paid 60/1 called He’s No Pie Eater.

I tend to agree with you on that.
June 7, 2008 at 20:09 #167246Reet,
Is this the same Papal Bull that got behind early, carried his head high and only got going when the race was won? Like we said he would.Don’t know about him costing Timeform subscribers. From what I remember he was top rated for some of those wins.

You really are a bit of a lemon mate- did any of us say we fancied him today? He may not be for the purist, but he wins when conditions are in his favour. Keep following those top-rateds like the other lemmings!

Not saying anyone fancied it Carvills, just he ran like I and Timeform expected with all his normal traits. Other subscribers may back top rated horses. I, like yoursef, look for value, but that means any price, favourite or outsider. Even Papal Bull if I thought price meant it was worth taking a chance on his temperament.

Value Is EverythingJune 10, 2008 at 11:23 #167704I have to admit that I am with Carvs on this one, Papal Bull has the ability there, although he is highly strung, highly strung horses dont make the best bankers but they will win races and are worth a chance every once in a while. The other day PB was far too fired up and was going daft in the paddock, which IMO cost him the race.
The horse will win this season almost guaranteed, he’s one of those ones that stoutey will only have on top form a couple of times a season (usually june july sort of time if I remember correctly) but the more he gets beat in between now and then the bigger his price will be when he does win. I never backed him on friday as done youmzain and red rocks, but had they been absent and Papal Bull had been better behaved in the pre parade ring I may have done him e/w. IMO if you write him off in every race just because he’s highly strung he’ll do you out of a few quid at some point.
Many montjeus have a high head carriage, Papal Bull, Bulwark, Won In The Dark, and am pretty sure that this was attributed to Scorpion and Hurricane Run and Motivator at various times too. I remember there was a lot of talk about the temperament issues of Motivator and Walkinthepark before the 2005 derby before they did a 1-2 (despite walkinthepark sweating profusely beforehand) and as I remember there was a major operation to get motivator to the start at epsom calm and collected as they didnt think he’d handle the prelims.
What did timeform say about Bulwark before he won the Chester Cup at 40-1 (readily available at 66s in the morning) "Best avoided", despite the fact that he well had the form in the book to win it fairly easily, and he proved that a high head carriage doesnt necessarily write off a horses chance completely. Papal Bull, highly strung or not has the ability to run to about 120-125 which is enough to win at the top (ish) level. In an average looking group1 or a group2 hes got as good a chance as any.
June 11, 2008 at 02:02 #167762Totally agree with you Bulwark. Papal Bull may well win a race this year, but if I am to back him, the price I am willing to take must be effected by his temperament.
The same can be said about Bulwark.
Bulwark had been gelded since his last flat run. Had been blinkered before but took well to a first time visor in the Chester Cup. Hopefully visor will work again. At his best (looking far enough back) he was well weighted. May be his enthusiasm could be best fresh, one race every six or eight weeks perhaps.
Still a quirky individual is Bulwark.
