With Almanzor out, this race looks quite open.
With a run, Coral-Eclipse runner-up Barney Roy would have outstanding claims.
Nonetheless, my starting point will be last year’s moral winner Mutakayyef. The victim of a Hanagan shocker that day, this horse has had a troubled time so far this season. Despite negative vibes about his fitness and wellbeing after several niggles, he ran a blinder to chase home Ribchester in the Queen Anne. The fire clearly still burns and, as one of the few definite runners (soundness permitting) in the field, he must be each-way value at the current price.
Mutakayyef 12/1 e/w.
July 9, 2017 at 15:56 #1309520I was on Almanzor at 5/1. Disappointment once more.
Barney Roy looks likely to run here next and I’d imagine will take all the beating. I think he’ll prove himself Europe’s premier 3 year old colt on the Knaves mire.
4/1 generally.
July 19, 2017 at 07:43 #1310681See you later Mutakayyef.
July 19, 2017 at 09:02 #1310686According to oddschecker Coral have Mutakayyef priced up at 8’s…….

August 4, 2017 at 10:26 #1312746what chance Winter turning up at York for this? as short as 5s with some firms
August 4, 2017 at 11:26 #1312753She will be a lot shorter on the day. I suspect she will go for the Irish champion.
August 4, 2017 at 11:30 #1312755cheers mate,i was hoping she went and made the market for other,as I would have been against her at york
August 7, 2017 at 17:30 #1313197Churchill a possible runner here

Shouldn’t this be called the Juddmonte Frankel Stakes by now?
Surely something should be named after Frankel? A real slight on the memory of a truly great racehorse that he doesn’t have a race in his honour in the UK.This race seems the perfect candidate.
* Sponsored by Frankel’s owner
* At a prestigious meeting
* Current name is not massively longstanding or have huge historical connection (Hennessy at Newbury for example)
* He actually won the damn thing.Ok, small rant over.
August 7, 2017 at 20:06 #1313203I imagine that Churchill’s participation makes Winter’s less likely with her probably heading towards the Irish Champion for which she’s 3/1 favourite.
I’m not overly convinced that this is the right move for Churchill but you couldn’t dismiss him. I’m happy to be on Barney Roy at 7/2, but this news was not welcomed on that front.

Surely something should be named after Frankel? A real slight on the memory of a truly great racehorse that he doesn’t have a race in his honour in the UK.The problem is that Frankel was named after the American trainer Bobby Frankel and if a race was to be named the ‘Frankel Stakes’ it could be inadvertently perceived as in honour of the ‘man’ rather than the ‘horse’.
At least there is a statue to the greatest racehorse at Ascot – just a shame it’s horrible.
August 7, 2017 at 21:41 #1313223Hard to judge how Churchill will do over 2 furlongs more. Winter has proved she gets the distance and I’d fancy her strongly to beat the colts in either the juddmonte or the Irish champion. She look like a bull of a horse at goodwood and is maturing rapidly.

Totally agree, RR.

If not this race, I quite like the idea of the maiden race Frankel won on debut being named after him. He beat a decent field that day including Nathaniel and I think it would benefit the race as well as honouring the horse. The juddmonte doesn’t need to be boosted so I’d perhaps favour the maiden instead which would immediately be boosted to one of the best maidens of the year. Maybe.
August 8, 2017 at 03:04 #1313242For me this is quite a trappy race to stay away from, but I deeply hope that Barney will crown his fabulous season here

That’s a lovely thought MOM but sadly not practical as Frankel’s maiden win took place very late in the season, August 13th, so most 2yo’s would have run and won their maidens before then. Also it would be held at an evening meeting at Newmarket on one of their Newmarket Nights where most of the folk who turn up are mainly interested in what band is playing rather that taking an interest in the horses so it wouldn’t really be a fitting tribute to Frankel.
Who would have known that one evening in Newmarket when all eyes were on Westlife that the future Champion of the World had just belted down the July Course and beaten Nathaniel by half a length.
Any race named in honour of Frankel surely has to be a Group race so I would go with maybe a higher class 2yo race like the Dewhurst although to be honest I really like the sound of the Juddmonte Frankel Stakes as suggested by RR

I hope it’s not long before he gets the recognition he deserves.
JacBack to race I’m with Hein and Charles everyone else in thinking Barney Roy will win…

I didn’t realise it was a late season maiden on a Newmarket nights. That’s a shame.
A group race it is then. Either way, there definetely should be a race named after him.
