Different strokes for different folks. A very crusty well argued piece by Patchy for the volume up brigade and good to let it out Mac.
I’m a self confessed muter but also a racing fraud so on the latter point – put what value you will on what follows here.I would agree that most people know number two’s views on the mute button. We are forgetting of course the odd member that looks in very occasionally, those with memory loss, and the growing band of fresh lurkers. Surely these three groups, one with a disability, deserve enlightenment and to learn how to get more sharpness and pleasure out of racing by avoiding the distraction of commentary. I am thankful for Davies for his constant reminders (not that a racing fraud watches much racing) because it is so easy to slip back into the old groove.
As inventor of splash – however annoying the discipline may be, it states that people must be free to write what’s in their mind. I think Davies mute comments do vary and he often qualifies them quite amusingly. If I am very honest I think his comment was possibly the most interesting on this page – Patchy’s piece is neck and neck. No dammit Patchy wins it….That won’t worry number 2.
Equally Mac and Patchy; you the two Mr livids have as equal a right as the bad Baron for showing your wares off in tiff form.I’m sorry to say Mac that the chances of ITV racing sponsoring the Truffle shout house are even more of a longshot now. Davies gets you more views but if he upsets the advertisers I’m afraid he may have to go.
Marmite suited Davies has had a stellar last year and has had quite an impact on this hothouse sort of changing it – Everyone hates him so much it’s made the rest of us friends. I suppose the most livid marmite haters will just have to put up with the rough as well as the smooth but apart from Davies we’re all joined at the hip – remember that Tippi our Queen of posts
There has been so much disorder to put up with since I encouraged the SPLASH format. We’ve had Kate Bush getting her singing wares out and certainly she has been the most constant unregistered member on here for many a year. She may have re-tired?
Kotkijet’s Drip of Days had to be lived through for 30 days not forgetting the Whip wars and subsequent execution.
Look if ever I was to join a click it would have to be you Mac, meself (slang) and the narcissist Chezza. And for why ? We have all run forums and therefore have so much in common. I was gifted one and set one up – both Betfair offshoots and both sadly non profit making. You Mac were gifted this fine house of views – I won’t mention the rumour you bought it on the 🤐 it’s old ground we won’t go over, and you won that on points, due to yer large knife😅. And then there’s Sir Cherry of Cheezeville – the guy most likely to hate – well he had a big forum in paradise with a penny arcade attached. When he was up against the ropes in a hate war – possibly of his own making – he committed hari kari by putting up one of his betting markets links in here ( lounge actually ) and POOF like Puff the magic Baron he was gone. Dunwoody survived a similar offence but managed to avoid the knife – he was on a horse and rode like a bat out of hell and was found hiding in the back numbers of this house, but survived somehow.
By the way I have run two forums, more than both of you, so effectively you two -including number two will answer to me – you can call me Gambino.
January 29, 2023 at 16:08 #1632851Chezza knew it was only a matter of time – gamble can smell an altercation a mile off and he’s on the scene at Warp 9 before you can blink or say “Klingon Empire.”
Chezza really enjoyed reading all that – much of which Chezza had forgotten.
That’s the thing about Chezza – Chezza’s had so many run ins with so many people on so many platforms in so many walks of life as Chezza meanders along this mortal coil, Chezza tends to forget who Chezza’s offended and why.
Every now and then Chezza encounters someone still livid and fuming about something Chezza said or did maybe 20 years ago and Chezza can’t even remember who they are or what the incident was.
That tends to annoy them even more, tbh – err, sorry about that.
Anyway, thank you for appreciating Chezza’s variations on a theme here, gamble.
Chezza doesn’t need to tell you the tongue is never far from the cheek with Chezza.
Others, however, might benefit from a regular reminder.
But more than nine reminders and the Stewards may have to step in.
ITV Racing are at Sandown Park, Musselburgh and Wetherby next week – Chezza’s going to try “weally, weally, hard” not to mention muting the coverage.
But no promises!

You’re a cosey upper, a Mr. Knowitall and at times an irritating b*rstard.I’m a post’n’ goer, a fraud and a self confessed twat and just love abuse – thrown or self inflicted.
Whether Davvid you have won this fascinating big tempo war of words, or have come an expected second to the two hatted Goliath and his cheerleader, will be know tomorrow. See if you can still post ol’son !
I have taken out survival insurance with a proof scriptwriting double – trouble is he doesn’t work after hours when the drawers in my house open to let out my horrors.
I do like a strong admin. Makes it worth getting up in the morning!
January 29, 2023 at 16:35 #1632854gamble loves the smell of a strong admin in the morning – it smells like….victory.
With Gambino, Chezza’s damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t – if Chezza’s friendly and endeavours to seize positively upon instances of common ground, Chezza’s a “cosy upper,” and Chezza’s vilified the rest of the time.
No one knows how hard it is being Chezza!
Anyway, nice to see the Towton Novices’ Chase at Wetherby getting an airing – Chezza wonders if anyone will be able to view it as a race in its own right and not a “trial” (shudder) for the Brown’s Advisory (who is Brown and who asked for his or her advice in the first place? Chezza didn’t!) at “the Fez.”
Chezza won’t ever know, of course, because Chezza watches the racing on m….oops!

Named after the deadliest battle ever fought on English soil. But I don’t suppose the quiz show “it was before my time” brigade will have heard of it!

Let’s hope Saturday’s renewal has less carnage – wow!

January 29, 2023 at 17:48 #1632871Sorry to interrupt the racing and history channel, but I have edited the word bilge in reference to ITV commentary above and changed it. When I used to watch terrestrial, I was often doing calculations on other races, amendments, non-runners etc, and so only viewed it with half an eye, and my bent was never pundits opinions just data and mathematics – so the sound of talking was a distraction if I was adjusting calculations or making fresh.
I would often listen in if I watched and was not betting. I had maybe a different angle to most when I was betting as opinion did not matter to me it was just data and maths with maths having the edge.
Crusty Patch over page, highlighted a list of reasons for looking and listening which all made sense for those who follow racing in a more customary and traditional way and for the few non-betting viewers – however many those number today.
January 29, 2023 at 19:05 #1632883Given the carnage and pivotal role in the long-running Wars of the Roses it’s surprising how relatively little-known is the Battle of Towton
A large 20th century cross marks the spot above the aptly named Bloody Meadow and to this day flowers are often seen laid around it
A trail around the site is maintained by the Towton Battlefield Society, who’s patron was the late actor Robert Hardy, also an authority on the English Longbow. Some years ago I attended an interesting talk given by the society held in a pub in the nearby village of Saxton, though Hardy wasn’t there
As for the Towton Novices’ Chase: it’s had some good winners, perhaps most notably Mr Mulligan, and I was on-course to see Ollie Magern’s win, who later won two Charlie Hall Chases over C&D
January 29, 2023 at 20:14 #1632896‘gamble loves the smell of strong admin in the morning – it smells like…. victory’
It sure as hell beats napalm, and it’s a good exacting atmosphere to work in. I have been an excess hours zero paid subscriber to this part fly ridden house of words for a godammed two word wasted decades. Victory may be sweet but my aim is to surprise, wake up, and sometimes stiffen the sinews on a low scoring niggle scale. I have never been a tormentor like Tank or a thrower down of a gauntlet like Ricky Lake – no I aim sometimes with a posit and challenge with an obscure dryness and subtlety, often awakening long and best forgotten memories and rarely wanting to score a direct and blatant hit.
Hughes and Davies have stolen the limelight from us ordinary mortals this year. They both adopt a coseying up embracing of others style. As a post ‘n’ goer I am relic of the past – the ultimate being Razeen. I have tried to join the clicks in a roundabout way by calling people better sounding names but they soon find me out as an out and out fraud. It took me six months to investigate if I might be God and two days to answer to my favourite biscuit 🍪.
Fact is I am an oddball and a fraudulent one at that.Interesting Drone, and I used to hugely enjoy studying the old battles, formations and such, of king Henry the Vth when I was a gifted urchin. Around about the same time – my Gretna Green married life in Kenya was aborted by overfussing parents and strict social custom at the time that forced eight year olds to be locked up in school.
Many years later I had a bit of a Mrs Robinson thing with a spuritual medium who told me I had been a King in a previous life.
Was I called Henry I curiously asked ?
Infuriatingly she didn’t know which King I was. I was drawn to King Wenceslas as a boy and that feels a good fit.
January 29, 2023 at 22:39 #1632909Opinion seems divided on which channel will host the Show next week – the Racing Post state ITV4 but, unless the Radio Times website is suggesting ITV1.
Either way, on this occasion, what’s on offer might be overshadowed by the Dublin Racing Festival.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"January 29, 2023 at 23:37 #1632914I’ve said many times on here that I am hugely grateful for ITV Racing, and am definitely a “volume up” person. There are some things about it that I’d change, but I believe it gets a lot right.
Being now fairly used to Mr Davies’ style, I don’t think his mute button comments are intended to insult those who think differently. And I would defend his right to make them as he is not making personal attacks or going off topic.
One key aspect where I appear to differ from Ian is that I am delighted that there is a terrestrial broadcaster supporting and cheerleading for the sport. I too could find plenty else to focus on if racing ended, but I’d still prefer that racing thrives, and believe that terrestrial TV still has a big role to play in this at present.
Currently it seems that a lot of the most frequent posters on the forum share quite similar views, and getting some alternative viewpoints is always welcome. So I’d echo previous comments that it would be good to hear more from CrustyPatch

Absolutely – nothing could be further from my mind.
Tbh, I’m still faintly amazed that a two-line throwaway sentence – just the latest of so many I’ve made on this thread – could provoke the reaction it has done.
Tbh, I think a lot of racing fans will be more focussed on events at Leopardstown next weekend, though there are undoubtedly some interesting contests on ITV.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"January 30, 2023 at 00:15 #1632920A good well reasoned post Marlingford and sadly I can’t disagree with hardly one word. If Davies sparked crusty’s ire annoying him enough to spout then all power to Davies’s elbow – he’s the fookin oil of the powerhouse in here and has more energy than a tart on uppers. How the hell can you best him ? Even Goliath looks wounded.
The problem with Crusty is he’s as miserable an old fogey of a writer as I am, and just refuses to share his crust – same as I refuse to let gamble out of the sock drawer.January 30, 2023 at 01:12 #1632929It’s ITV1 on Saturday Ian.
And for those people who love to see Mullins odds on shots winning by twenty lengths ITV will be covering Leopardstown and Musselburgh on Sunday.
January 30, 2023 at 01:36 #1632931I agree with Marlingford. Mike, who likes his racing but not as obsessively as me ( he even gets up early to watch The Morning Line, but then, unlike me, he is a morning person anyway) thoroughly enjoys it. I tend to watch it but also have racing radio on at the same time. They go to tracks that other terrestrial channels have always ignored: give a mention to the stable staff ( I don’t remember Ch4 doing that but I could be wrong). And handle any injuries/fatalities very sensitively. Are very adaptable as well when the weather causes cancellations. I’m sure that they’re getting more people interested in racing, too. Given that I can’t really get to the races the way I used to and can’t afford to subscribe to the other racing channels I’m really grateful for their coverage.
January 30, 2023 at 02:02 #1632933I don’t see what’s wrong with Ian Davies mentioning the fact that he watches racing with the sound muted. I’m never quite sure when he is serious or not but I also tend to ignore the waffle in between races without going so far as to mute.
He is one of the best posters on here although I don’t always agree with his views, his posts are well thought out and presented in a logical manner.
There are a lot of members here who never indulge in any of the good natured banter in the Lounge and yet they deem it necessary to try and censor those of us that do.
We can live without these po-faced curmudgeons.
