“If there are no or hardly any Irish voices on it today, try listening to it today Ian.”
I have nothing against Irish voices specifically – it’s voices generally I object to, sir.

“You may be surprised, and enjoy!”
    I wouldn’t be – and I wouldn’t – so I won’t.

“Chapman was quite funny the other day”
That’s like saying Hitler was once quite human – highly implausible and in any event utterly lacking in any meaningful form of redemption. Chapman is as perpetually annoying as he is razor-haired and orange.

“I am welcoming these live programmes of the sport we love.”
I love it too – the sheer volume of live races on ITV1 this year has been superb. But “silence is still golden” – sorry!

Chamberlain on today again, bit of a negative.
Yes keep the mute button on Ian!
In fact yesterday he seemed to keep apologising for the gaff’s he made.
One big one was telling viewers to get their ITV 7’s on before the following race.
Then as the first race finished he said sorry that one was the first leg, and said sorry again.

I actually unmuted to see if they took advantage of the rare opportunity to cover the auction after the seller and to be fair, despite the Beverley clashing race, I think they did.

Meghan Nicholls didn’t tell me anything I didn’t already know, but she came across as intelligent, articulate and opinionated and gets my instant vote for the coveted “Chezza’s Least Annoying TV racing pundit” award.

You’ll change your mind once you hear her talking about her dad’s horses. Best to keep her on mute.

Oh, and she’s “Megan” without an h, by the way. 😉

Agree Glad. Sorry to her Legion of fans but I never thought she was much good as a jockey or as an analyst.

Even by your standards, gamble, that’s poor.

I would not disagree Ginger – it was a throwaway line – but more worryingly is the fact that standards in most societies are falling. This is not reflected so much in here though, where there is a fairly strong rule of law, and the odd ‘shoot ’em when they move outside of Matron’s matrix’ homemade sheriff, like your good self.

Feeling lazy I watched Goodwood on ITV yesterday and sorry gents despite the admiration here for Megan I can’t say I share it having seen her here and RTV her vocabulary while doing the paddock was limited and came from a ‘stock’ of well used cliches on this channel.
While not viewing the channel as much as some I get the impression that (at the rare times the mute isn’t engaged) the ‘homework’ of the presenters is both lazy and selective.Bragged about when it happens to come right but more likely very quickly forgotten when the numerous times it doesn’t with excuses at the ready.
    good luck to all

I wouldn’t go as far as to call it “admiration” – I unmuted to see how they covered the post-seller auction, heard her for literally the first time ever, and while she didn’t say anything I didn’t already know she wasn’t as bad as I was expecting and in that brief minute or two she didn’t say anything I thought was fundamentally incorrect.

It’s not exactly a ringing endorsement!

Back to mute straight after the Sale….

Sally Ann Grassick is annoying and I am not sure about Megan Nicholls yet. Really there are too many presenters, huge numbers of them! We could get rid of most of them.
I often record it in advance and then I can move it on so I don’t have to see Ed Chamberlin talking to the public.

“her vocabulary while doing the paddock was limited and came from a ‘stock’ of well used cliches on this channel.”

The reality is that there are only a few ways of describing a thoroughbred and if you have to comment on thirty or forty in a single day, repetition is inevitable. And that’s doubly true if, as we all suspect, any sort of negative comment is strictly prohibited by the producers.

I’ve been a paddock watcher for more years than I care to recall, but it’s always been the negatives that are the main reason for doing it. But you never hear any of the TV people say something like ‘He looks listless and disinterested, dull in his coat and he’s carrying about twenty pounds excess around his belly’.

Like any other approach to winner finding, it’s not always accurate. I was at the recent Salisbury evening meeting and arrived considering a bet on a Clive Cox juvenile making his debut, called Heroism. But in the paddock he look very much in need of the race and going to post, he was greener than the well watered grass. He beat the 2/7 favourite rather comfortably, returned at 13/2! But at least I know he should improve quite a bit next time.

I too find negative comment more interesting.

I’d heard good things about Ken Pittersen so unmuted for him before a race or two – a more cautious, sit-on-the-fence guy it would be hard to have imagined, I was most disappointed.

Whether you’re on TV or just having a bet at home, you are never, EVER, going to win long-term if you’re terrified of ever being wrong.

Pick holes in favourites – if there are holes to be picked – find horses that could outrun their odds, get off the fence.

That’s because they’re not commenting on me.

Fell off my seat Gladders lol..🤣😅😃

I prefer Megan out of all the female presenters, she seems very down to earth and gives the best paddock descriptions of all of them. But yes would occasionally like to hear some negatives. Grinding of teeth is one that puts me off a horse and also a dirty bottom could mean an upset tummy..Gladders take note ..not too much cheese before bed tonight. B-)

Have noticed that if Megan gives a tip for the £20 challenge it’s often worth following as she must have some very good sources of information via her dad and boyfriend. :good: Jac

Bear in mind that the lack of time alloted to whoever is walking around the paddock to describe what they are seeing could also be an as to why repeated sayings crop up (usually they get no more than 30sec per horse and less if it is a bigger field).

I would imagine that flat horses are most unlikely to be sent to the races looking dull in their coat unless it is early spring and still chilly conditions or it is a grey where it is hard to tell which has been noted in the past. You usually hear the likes of ‘carrying a bit of condition’ or ‘sweating between the back legs’ or ‘sweating under the saddle cloth’ and the odd ‘very keen/on their toes with two handlers’.

The four horse March Stakes was quite amusing with Megan doing her paddock bit as each of the horse were spaced about as far away from each other as the paddock would allow and she had to wait a fair bit or even walk back until the next horse came into proper camera view.

I think in general if they were alloted more tv time to spend on the horses in the paddock we might get a little more in depth comments but I don’t see that happening anytime soon, which is a shame being that the horses are supposedly the stars of the show.

With regard to negative comments, going back a few years here, I remember Rishi Persad’s introduction to viewers of the Racing Channel? (Could have been called something else at that time), he was introduced as a “paddock expert”. I believe it was at Sandown and his comment before the first race was that he couldn’t come up with a positive but was confident that, the horse’s name was something like, Omaha City wouldn’t be winning today. As you can probably guess, said horse won at,I think, 20/1.And hasn’t looked back since.

At that time, For some reason I had Jim Ramsey’s (director/producer of the channel) phone number and during a conversation some time after, I brought up Rishi’s gaffe, Ramsey defended him and drove me off by suggesting that I should give it a go. At the ime the idea appalled me but…………….what if?
