    Sounds about right.

I specialise in, among others things, Point-to-Point and Hunters’ Chase betting and Eddie once accompanied me to Tweseldown where we both reckoned ex-NH Fred Pilliner was a cut above his rivals in the opener.

He was 4/1 against a 1/3 local favourite.

We watched the race at the top of the mound inside the circuit and, as Fred Pilliner went clear jumping the last, Eddie shouted out: “Bring home the Bunny, Freddie!” and, fully 6ft 5, stood arms aloft in triumph, before descending the mound, like a swooping bird of prey, to collect, happily oblivious of the sea of barbours and green wellies around us staring at him in shock and awe.

I, silently but hugely amused, quietly followed him down to the underpass to also get paid out.

    Those were the days.

Ian, I agree about Eddie’s dry sense of humour, the only drier sense of humour in the press room would have been Barty.

Eddie certainly knows his stuff but equally not one to blow his own trumpet, if it wasn’t for his height he wouldn’t stand out anywhere and that’s probably the way he would want it.

100% – he wouldn’t thank me for bigging him up.

    … Tate Britain

As it happens I was reading the RP and jokingly said “thought you should be looking at this!”

He told me to **** off

Actually no but its was a surprise

Firmly believe he should be on the box and also Steve Mellish

If I was at York and that band was playing afternoon long I’d be having a whip round to pay them to shut up!

Another case for watching with the sound turned down?

Agree robnorth It’s not confined to racing though. Made the mistake of attending an England match once and the tuneless drone of that awful “band” that apparently follows any England football team made me vow never to attend another. Every bit as bad as the vuvuzella (spelling?) that people railed about. At least you can turn the sound down on the telly

    Abso-f*****g-lutely.

While I love going racing, the worst aspect is it is impossible to mute what’s going on around you.

York is terrible for having nonstop prattle over the course PA with some “jobs for the boys experts” going on about their fancies from about an hour before the first race.

If you try and get away from it by going behind the stands your ears are assaulted by either the jazz band or the Irish band.

Even worse – Towcester used to have Chapman as its raceday presenter, so you had his dulcet tones from about half an hour before the first race until just before the last.

He did, occasionally manage to get a good interview with a trainer, usually a lower profile one who wanted his five minutes of fame, but it was far outweighed by the banal stuff.

He also used to try and do “comedic” handovers to the commentator, some would play along but the best was Barty who just refused point blank to play along and engage.

The last time I was at Plumpton there was a race day presenter who recommended backing one of the runners each way. In a three runner race.

Can’t wait for some more of Eds interaction with the York band. Its cutting edge bantz at its finest.

Adele Mullrellan is a big fan of Spock I bet, obsessed with “ears pricked”.

    Painful I’m sure Paul

Chapman is like the loud office bore who tells you “jokes” VERY LOUDLY and slowly whilst staring at you to make sure you laugh. And then pulls faces and bitches like an old hissy fit queen when you just stare back ta him stone faced

There is nothing in the world worse than an unfunny person trying to be funny

Ken the paddock man is sound as a pound. Used to like his column in the Weekender when I used to buy it, no idea if he still does it. He is well suited to TV in my opinion.

While on this forum there is a mixture of those liking or not liking ITV Racing.
I don’t use Twitter or anything like that, but I wondered what the general consensus outside of here was about the programme?
I can’t even stand the opening music. Makes me cringe.

Generally I can live with the programme but today, sorry yesterday now, I found the whole thing very shallow.
I agree about the band, that was cringe worthy and would have made me reach for the bottle, if I’d had one!

Bring back the weekdays of John Tyrel, John Rickman, Brigadier Gerard, Joe Mercer.
I wonder back in those days would we have been so critical, or just accepted what was fed to us. I am sure however the presenters would not have been so dominant, and just let the spectacle of the afternoon occur without analysing absolutely everything.

Tatling. I rate Ken very highly and love the fact that his opinions are both accurate informative and certainly not bland. He’s a genuine racegoer too of course. Rarely fail to see him at meetings. Seems a friendly guy too

I think his Weekender piece tends to be occasional now but it shouldn’t be IMO
