I reckons a fair few viewers take one look and think: “I wonder how much money I save every year by not being the sort of person who not only goes to Royal Ascot, but buys a ticket for an enclosure where you’re expected to buy or rent that kind of nonsense to wear every day – I’m saving an absolute fortune simply by watching all this at home.”

So, tbf, they could be, albeit inadvertently, creating a much-needed national feel-good factor during this cost-of-living crisis!

The dressing up to go racing is something that appeals more to women. It is a big part of the day.

With all the black top hats. The orange, pink and yellow circles & stripes of the dresses. Blue dots and brown squares. The fashion always looks like Liquorice Allsorts.

The dresses for women I get, understand why they want to dress up like it’s their best mate’s wedding. But those stupid top hats and tails? Grow up Ascot.

I know what you mean, QF. I have never been to the Royal meeting. I have been to Epsom on Derby Day but not in the Queens Stand, which has the same dress code as Ascot. But plenty of people (including men who go to those meetings) seem to like the dressing up, so it is not going to go away. I am sure there would be protests if Ascot said it was abolishing its dress code.

I remember being at the Greyhound Derby final night one year, which was on the same day as Epsom. I left after the Derby to get to Wimbledon. Someone who had been in the Queens Stand at Epsom had the same idea and turned up at Plough Lane in his top hat and suit. In that setting, he did look a bit ridiculous!

Needless to say he had the piss taken out of him all night but to be fair he entered into the spirit of it all. He was even celebrating with a bunch of lads after backing the Derby winner.

    “Grow up Ascot.”

I wouldn’t attribute it to immaturity, but I might attribute it to making lifestyle choices I cannot identify with.

Rishi going straight to Frankie after finishing nearly last, dope. Frankie looked and sounded like he wanted to say “F-Off and speak to the winner”

Rishi to Hollie Doyle when she just won the race…

“You looked to be travelling well.”

I would imagine Rishi would have had his instructions through his earpiece.

100% – likewise the camera operator.

ITV Racing has far too many presenters and, it seems, not enough competent production staff (or at least staff empowered to react to events and make on the spot decisions). The camera angle showing Canute’s horrific injury was not cut quickly enough and running an unedited interview with James Given rejoicing in the fact that all runners at the meeting were going home safely (obviously recorded earlier) straight after the announcement of Canute’s death was unforgivable.

Agree about the top hats too. Dettori looked like the Artful Dodger as he walked into the ITV arena for his interview.

Who would be the more offended?

Dettori or the late Jack Wild?

What was so annoying was the total toadyness. Okay we have a new Monarch and we are pleased that he Monarchy is continuing with horseracing, but their anchor is embarrassing

SSR starts to show a race from Hexham but then goes to a split screen with Sha Tin and cuts away to take the commentary from Hong Kong.

I would have thought most of its audience was more interested in the Hexham race.

Pity they didn’t get Rishi with that bucket of water after one race. Not much time for moronic questioning of winning jockeys right after a race.

Great that ITV showed every race, every day but is there any real excuse for not showing every horse in the paddock before every race rather than just a handful?
And the lack of info most of the time about any watering or overnight rain, combined with going stick readings continues to puzzle. Not one interview all week with Chris Stickels.
I saw Neil Channing yesterday having a pop at both the BHA & Ascot for not providing up to date info regarding such matters, quite right too.

Personally if I were part of a connections party the idea of seeing Rishi or Matt Chapman dashing across the parade ring brandishing a microphone in my direction would be enough to deter going!
Also longing for the day when the jockey having a microphone stuck under his nose a minute after winning a race tells them to F*** OFF!
    good luck to all

It’s rumoured that Lester Piggott told Thommo to do just that immediately after Teenoso had won the 1983 Derby. Haven’t been able to find any footage to corroborate this, though.

ITV are pleased with the viewing figures, so expect more of the same going forwards.
