April 10, 2017 at 18:30 #1296405Middle Eastbhs already run and won Stevie!!
I had a brain fart moment there.
I watched the Middle East race back and perhaps I could give her credit for a little bit more value than the winning margin. It all looked a bit desperate first time round and I can’t say it looked much of a race. The Imprudence later on was a bit underwhelming for me. The favourite was beaten early, pulling the jockey’s arms out and my feeling is that the form is miles weaker than the colts race.
Al Wukair was very much the star of the day.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
April 11, 2017 at 08:01 #1296444The time Ultra managed in the 03:25 Maisons-Laffitte yesterday threw up a red flag to me about the actual race distance they ran over.
last Kingdom took 1m 40.30 for a mile, so Ultra must be Pegasus doing an ‘extra furlong’ so fast, doing the maths, to me they ran over 8.5f and not the official distance of 9f.
Mike.
April 11, 2017 at 11:30 #1296454With regards to my query about the true distance Ultra actually raced, I asked Ray my French Racing expect to look at it.
Hi Mike,
Looks like someone made a mistake with the positioning of the stalls and no one twigged it. If you look at the FG map for 1800m at M-L, you can see that the stalls should be positioned before the far-side rail begins, but the video seems to show that the stalls have been moved forward to where the far-side rail has already begun.
Yesterday’s 107.50 for 1800m seems to belong to the 1700m times.
Mike.

Liz is clearly reading my tips.

I notice she waited until AFTER the Djebel to nominate Al Wukair. Likewise Via Ravenna is picked after landing the Imprudence. The genie is out of the bottle with them regarding potential ante-post.
I do like Pamplemousse as mentioned by Liz but I am not sure where they are going with her. I was a bit worried in case she is a sprinter. She is quite a tall, leggy filly but she broke smartly and made all at Chantilly over six and a half furlongs. She does go right away from her field easily but it is hard to say for now if she beat a lot.
I recall Freddy Head’s Neko winning a race by 9 lengths last season in the spring. She went into Liz Price’s horses to follow but did nothing at all afterwards in three further starts, so it’s hard to call.
This is Pamplemousse’s race and she is different class to her rivals here, it was a very taking win and she had control all the way:-

It will be interesting to see where she goes next and what odds she goes off in better company. I think even the most basic of French speakers will have been able to interpret the French headline describing Pamplemousse’s win. It simply stated “Pamplemousse, Dans Un Canter”
Oui!
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
April 12, 2017 at 23:28 #1296601The Prix Ganay is on the 1st Of May and there are current joint favourites in the form of Cloth Of Stars and Ultra.
Both of the Fabre horses sit at 5/2 but I have a feeling Ultra is the one to be on. Ultra is said to be a pet favourite of Andre Fabre but that’s not the reason to back him. The point about preferring Ultra for the Ganay is the fact that Andre Fabre has hinted that Cloth Of Stars will head to Newmarket for the Jockey Club Stakes.
It would make sense to separate the two horses and Fabre said that the extra distance at Newmarket should suit Cloth Of Stars.
It is not hard to envisage Ultra as a shortish favourite for the Ganay if he lines up as the only one of the JT Favs currently.
This was Ultra’s seasonal debut and he wins nicely:-
http://www.thoroughbreddailynews.com/race-replays/2/2596/
Settled in behind he never looks in any real danger as he comes out to pick them up and assert his authority, coming away to be well in command as he hits the win line with ears pricked. Connections felt he would need this race badly after his setback last season.
Once considered an Epsom Derby prospect, this horse should improve and I feel he could well be an excellent prospect for the Ganay before being aimed quite high this year.
While Cloth Of Stars is doing the raiding in Britain, Ultra could be trousering the Ganay.
Prix Ganay 1st May Ultra 5/2 is my bet.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
April 12, 2017 at 23:39 #1296602Thanks for the heads up Steve as I’ve been toying with the idea of Cloth Of Stars for the Prix Ganay so I can put that one to bed and save myself a few of those new one pound coins.

I am not saying it’s 100% that Cloth Of Stars goes to Newmarket but Fabre seemed to stress that he felt the trip there would suit better.
Akihiro was said to be Fielden bound but he’s not declared.
It’s a reading between the lines job here but I felt strongly enough to back Ultra instead.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Nothing really jumped out at me last year Darren. I was looking forward to seeing La Cochere again but she never ran after beating Senga on her debut. Senga ended up franking the form by beating the Odds-On Frankel colt Last Kingdom next time she ran, before a decent fourth to the now injured filly Wuheida in the Boussac. Last Kingdom won recently, doing the form no harm.
Jean-Claude Rouget was said to be taking it slowly with La Cochere this year so it’s hard to see her in the Classics if that is the case. She was 2/5 on debut, so clearly well regarded and you can forget her 87 Racing Post Rating, as the filly she beat is now rated 109. It’s a question of waiting to see La Cochere again.
Meanwhile Andre Fabre has a nice looking recent debutante in the form of Rueing who was favourite for an unraced fillies race at Chantilly on the Polytrack. A few interesting fillies took her on over the 9 and a half furlong trip. Rueing looked a nice type with scope and she prevailed by a length and a quarter, looking like she will get further.
Here is that race:-
http://www.thoroughbreddailynews.com/race-replays/2/2578/
Rueing sits in a good position before picking up nicely to make a promising start to her career. The other filly to catch the eye was Jean-Claude Rouget’s Troarn a daughter Of Wootton Bassett. This slightly smaller filly breaks well enough but, whether by design or not, she is soon shuffled to the rear of the pack. As they reach the 400m marker she is in a hopeless position and I immediately thought she would have to be exceptional to win from where she was. Not able to get there in the end but she made a good fist of it making decent headway in the last 300m to finish a promising 4th.
How good the form will turn out is guesswork but I feel Rueing will progress well from this and Troarn looks a shoo-in for another maiden race if she can be kept nearer the head of affairs, having had no chance from the poor position she was in last time.
Another useful looking Fabre horse was Le Brivido, who was having his second start. Running over 6F this time, he looks ready for a step up to at least 7F next time. He comes under the push and briefly looks in trouble but he soon picks up into the final furlong and ultimately scores cosily. He is entered in the French 2000 Guineas, so it was a bit odd to see him at 6F, more so because he is also entered in the French Derby. He runs in the red colours with white on the shoulders and the spotted red cap.
http://www.thoroughbreddailynews.com/race-replays/2/2582/
To me he looks like he can well exceed his 95 RPR if upped in trip. A son of Siyouni he looks worth keeping an eye on next time.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
April 14, 2017 at 14:56 #1296713Senga runs in a Group 3 on Sunday at Chantilly Stevie. Up against a couple of Frankel’s in Toulifaut and Lady Frankel. Might be a pointer for the French Guineas.

I noticed that Joni. I was having a look this morning for Akihiro and spotted the fillies race. Toulifaut flopped on her final start but had looked promising prior to that. Lady Frankel could be anything for now, whilst Senga probably sets the standard.
I was actually keener to find where Akihiro runs and found that he is on the same card in the 10f Group 3 Noailles. I seem to recall Bering winning the race in his year but am not sure what the stats are for this race as a trial.
It looks a straight forward race for Akihiro, just 5 opponents, one of whom is also trained by Fabre. The ATR sire shows Akihiro at evens in their price forecast. I’ll be at Ladbrokes with a suitcase load of £20 notes if he is evens on Sunday

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
April 14, 2017 at 17:22 #1296737Prix Noialles is usually a French Derby trial.
The Prix Greffulhe is the one the French use as a trial for Epsom.
I’ve backed Akihiro too for Epsom. Steve, do you think they might take in both the Noialles and Greffulhe with Akihiro?
I know Plumatic was engaged for the Noialles, maybe they just wanted to give him a little bit more time after his debut, or maybe they have had a change of heart over targets after they galloped together (Akihiro and Plumatic) before racing earlier this week. I hope not.

Fabre said he was keeping Akihiro and Plumatic apart. Perhaps after entering the horse in the Epsom Derby Fabre has decided to come here. I am not sure whether many have won the Noailles and then won the French Derby. It sounded like Bering was the last one, according to the French website I visited. It sounded to my limited French that Galipad is running to act as pacemaker for Akihiro here. Maybe Plumatic or Waldgeist will take in the Greffulhe, if I had to bet on it I would say Waldgeist is the likeliest for that race. There was a suggestion that Waldgeist is Fabre’s best hope for the Derby but, as I said, I am a bit concerned if he has the pace for Epsom. He beat some dour looking sorts on mud last year after failing behind the, for me, middle of the road looking Frankuus.

Sadly no Evens. Paddy Power have opened at 4/7 for Akihiro tomorrow.
