    Completely disagree, LD.

Although Kyprios may be out, and Trueshan not the horse he was, Courage Mon Ami still has his stamina and class to prove.

Given that he’s already a gelding, I’d campaign him in the shorter Cup races this season and then go for the Ascot Gold Cup next year.

Not sure Ascot will suit him anyway and perhaps the easy steps route would take in the 2M Listed race at Sandown on Jul 7th, in which he’d have no penalty, and then the Group2 Lonsdale Stakes at the Ebor meeting, also 2M. Just a pity he wasn’t qualified to enter the Northumberland Plate, which closed on May 16th, but he needed to have a third run before that date. He’d have been a short price off 98 + a penalty!

Looks to me like a horse that will always need a long straight to produce his finishing kick. What was surprising today was how well he handled the quick ground and he looks a pretty fluent mover for such a big horse.

For info, the same connections have a 3yo half brother by Roaring Lion, called Lion’s Pride. He’s run once, finished second and has an entry in a 10F Novice Stakes at Redcar on Tuesday.

Alternatively, he may quicken up with more alacrity as he gains experience.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think he should go to Ascot this season either but they may view it as worth rolling the dice as Kyprios looked a class apart and with him missing this season it leaves the race more open.

Also a lot of the horses at the top of the market are also unproven at the trip and I agree with more experience (becoming more streetwise) the long straight issue may not be a problem. The Goodwood & Doncaster Cups would fit the bill for races with a long home straight or they may even look at say the Prix Gladiateur B-) which is just shy of 2m and with that experience maybe the Long Distance Cup on Champions Day?

    Runs in the Gold Cup.

Owner worried he won’t stay, but also worried Golden Horn wouldn’t stay in The Derby.
