Running in the Golden Horn colours for the Gosdens – probably beat nothing but a quite staggering performance on debut – left at the start, green as grass through the race and still the best part of 10-12L behind turning for home and yet wins by 5L.

I was watching it on RTV and the two Rachels in the studio (Casey and Candelora) were both quite taken by the performance, and rightly so.

The runner-up, although becoming frustrating, had an OR of 80 and an RPR of 85 going into the race and was in receipt of the 5lb fillies’ allowance, and she pulled 9.5 lengths clear of Stonking, who last time out had finished 5.5 lengths behind Tuxedo Junction, who has an OR of 85. Given all that, it’s easy to argue that the winner has easily run to 100+ on debut, when as green as grass and not in any way knocked about.

Of course, history is littered with impressive winners on debut who go on to do nothing subsequently, but it was certainly a most taking first appearance from Courage Mon Ami.

It’s not often a 3yo Maiden runs to a minimum potential OR of 93 (and that really is a minimum and you’d fancy him big time off 93 in a handicap) in September.

And the bare numbers don’t tell the whole story because this was an astonishing performance.

“It’s easy to argue that the winner has easily run to 100+ on debut, when as green as grass and not in any way knocked about” says Gladders and I couldn’t dispute any of that.

Only just got around to watching this. You could not have fancied him even as they turned for home. I wonder what price he traded at in running?

Interesting to note that those he beat were rated as they were – you can understand why it has taken this long for the horse to make the racecourse and hopefully he will have learned an awful lot for the run.

Not sure where they go with him from here but you would have to think whatever he does keeping him in training as a 4yr old would be the obvious route and the old addage of ‘he could be anything’ really does apply here.

Conditions race over a mile and a half on turf would be the logical next step.

“Not sure where they go with him from here”

Supplemented for the Arc, hoses up then goes to Ascot in search of that all-important nowadays 1m2f Group 1 and beats Baaeed.

Change of yards on the eve of the Arc and ridden by Dettori at the owner’s insistence.

I’d still be laughing on Christmas Day.

“I’d still be laughing on Christmas Day.”

I’m laughing right now. I’ve already backed him for next year’s Arc at 33s.

Should’ve got another forum member to back him for me at 100-1, NRNB, cash out at original odds in a photo finish.

Courage Mon Ami returns in the 5:15 Newcastle tomorrow. Currently 1-4, so not going to get rich backing him.

The double with Flightline for the BC Classic pays slightly better than 5/6.

Trouble is me and Gladders have seen too many horses with two stone in hand get beat over the years.

Apparently they’re not machines, you know….

I’d actually be more tempted to do the Flighline double if there were more runners in the Kempton race tonight, seems like when these sorts of hotpots lose it’s often in small fields.

Went completely against my word and put this one in a treble with the first winner at Ayr and Flightline, come on Gosden! When I saw this one was by Frankel I got all sentimental and thought it’d be fun to have a winning bet involving the the best UK horses son and the best US horse.

If the Haggas horse runs to its 87 rating and being in receipt of 12lbs then he will need to improve on his debut run which he really should by a country mile if even making only average improvement.

Will be interesting to see what tactics they employ…might still be too green to jump out and make all – his Kempton win was the second best time of the night on standard to slow surface, so I doubt they would want it to turn into a 4F burn up.

Wonder whether they will put him away for the season after today? Another year on his back and going onto turf will likely see more improvement too although it might be hard to place him next season without throwing him in the deep end before he is ready.
