Bristol de Mai for me. I think he is a class above the rest (in these conditions).
January 27, 2018 at 13:39 #1339404Cheltenham now heavy
January 27, 2018 at 13:59 #1339415With questions on Bristol De Mai and American, I went for The Last Samuri, who will stay all the way and comes from a stable in form.
Bristol De Mai should hose up if he is anywhere near as good as some people think. The Racing Post have him on 185, which is incredible really.
American has a bad run to forgive and he may well bounce back but I just feel I’ll get a run from The Last Samuri and he should appreciate a slog.
Big day for Bristol De Mai, with the Gold Cup looking a waste of time if he can’t win this on the ground he relishes. Stable form means I couldn’t back him and 7/4 odds suggest I am not alone in my thinking.
We should come pretty close to accepting Bristol De Mai is a one course, one conditions, horse if he can’t stamp his authority today.
The Last Samuri for me at 5/1.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
January 27, 2018 at 14:02 #1339417The Last samuri for me also
BDM in his optimum, will be interesting to see how he gets on
January 27, 2018 at 14:03 #1339418The Last Samuri should at least make it a tough race and not a walk over for Bristol De Mai. Bristol likes the going but if it does turn into a slog on this going I wonder how much of a mark it may leave on his Gold Cup chances with the festival now under two months away.

January 27, 2018 at 14:07 #1339420I agree with single point about the The Last Samuri. The stable is in tremendous form, he is proven in the conditions and only has to carry 11-0. That should make things a bit easier for him.
As for BDM, he’d have to handle the track first and prove how good he really is on a more demanding track.
January 27, 2018 at 14:19 #1339426Ground heavy, surely BDM cant cock this up now. ;)
January 27, 2018 at 14:35 #1339429erm. he did.
January 27, 2018 at 14:41 #1339432Fantastic performance and well done to connections!
He gave them weight on very soft ground and also a jumping lesson. No reason why connections should hide away from the GC.
BDM will surely go for the GN in 1-2 years time, but first he’d have to brush up his jumping when going against good stayers at a decent pace.
The Last Samuri ran a good trial, but was still a disappointing fourth in my opinion.January 27, 2018 at 14:42 #1339433Wonder what the reason will be this time – happy for Ellison who was just having his second winner from 80+ runners at Cheltenham, says he is going for the Gold Cup and that he doesn’t need soft ground but I think he has National written all over him.
January 27, 2018 at 14:45 #1339434Well done Kev and Charles, Definitely Red ran a cracker of a race. In contrast,
Bristol De Mai never looked comfortable after his early mistake where he had to
be very clever not to go through the fence. He didn’t really look to be travelling
as he can do after that, and his jumping was, I’m afraid to say, poor. I’m not sure
where they go with him now, but I’d say the Gold Cup, based on that, is unfortunately
beyond him
January 27, 2018 at 14:57 #1339435The Last Samuri dropped back and was never really travelling but he stayed on steadily, looking like six miles is his trip.
Bristol De Mai was never ridden with much confidence and zero attack. It was simply a case of holding him together most of the way. It appeared American had it at one stage but he began dropping away and it looked like Bristol De Mai might just outstay the lot of them but Definitely Red found more and Bristol De Mai quickly folded, almost getting caught by the slow motion finish of The Last Samuri. Somehow, American found something more from the depths and regained second but perhaps is was a case of who was tiring least.
Good win for Definitely Red and his odds for the National must surely collapse after that. The race ran very much like a National, rather than a Gold Cup trial and any aspirations Bristol De Mai had for Gold Cup glory look shot to bits there.
How the Racing Post can keep a straight face with their rating of 185 for Bristol De Mai is beyond me and it’s nonsense that anyone could come up with that figure.
No doubt some other excuse will emerge and some fans will keep the faith that a new Arkle is hiding within the grey frame but I would be looking to lower the horse’s ambitions after today’s showing.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
January 27, 2018 at 15:12 #1339438WOnder what definitely red will be rated after that
judging by what their rediculous rating of bdm is/wasJanuary 27, 2018 at 15:36 #1339446They should front run in the Ryanair but they have Top Notch for that. He should have won in ideal conditions but Jacob never let him lead.
No horse from that race is winning the Gold Cup.
January 27, 2018 at 16:13 #1339457I thought they’d said a while back that DR wasn’t going for the National again?
January 27, 2018 at 16:40 #1339459Definitely Red is as low as 16/1 for the Gold Cup and I think that’s nonsense myself.
You don’t have to go back far to see him getting thumped by Bristol De Mai and Blaklion. He was 24 lengths behind Bristol De Mai that time.
That was a funny race today. The betting in running must have been all over the shop, up and down like the proverbial sex worker’s underwear as the scenario kept changing. I reckon it may turn out a very dodgy piece of form. There were questions coming into the race and we didn’t get any real answers I feel.
I said Definitely Red’s Grand National odds would tumble and he’s a ridiculous 10/1 in a place now for Aintree.
Wholestone ran well enough later to suggest the Twiston-Davies horses are not desperately amiss and it was a strange, defensive, ride Bristol De Mai got today. It was almost as if they didn’t want to leave his race here today and would go harder at it in a bigger race later.
I doubt this was a good race with the Gold Cup in mind. I would have thought that Might Mite and in form Sizing John would have little trouble galloping ahead of today’s contestants at Cheltenham.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
January 27, 2018 at 16:46 #1339460Hadn’t heard that myself but for me that should be his target as I can’t see him cutting much ice in a Gold Cup that will be run (barring freak weather) on much quicker ground – he revels in testing conditions that places emphasis on extreme stamina.
He got pulled up early in last years National after being badly hampered so I would be prepared to give him another go at it before deciding it is not the race for him.
