Another 1-2 (of sorts) for Galileo in these big Group 1 races. He never fails to impress, the void will be insatiable when he’s gone.
Insatiable may be pushing it. 50% of his foals win, the other half never get their head in front. An awful lot of expensive losers out there.
July 8, 2017 at 22:21 #1309434Sad to read LS3 delighting in a Frankel not running well. I’ll never understand folk.
Perhaps some might equally wonder about the merits of starting a thread about a stallion ruling the world?
July 8, 2017 at 22:31 #1309435Stevie – can you quote where someone has said that what you think about Eminent is “bollocks”? You got this one right – well done. I have congratulated you and will happily do so again. You took a view on this race and on the Derby and this horse and I took a different view. This happens in every single race. That’s why we don’t all back the same horse. I have never said that you spoke bollocks, I just disagreed. In this case I was wrong and you were right. That’s ok – we all love this game. We all study hard. Do you think you are the only person who studies races? I study them too and today I look an idiot. Tomorrow I’ll find a winner and you’ll back a loser and everything will be right in the world. ;) I see The Black Princess won a good race today. Do you remember what you said about her? Let’s accept victory and defeat with grace. This is The Racing Forum – the best forum in the UK. There are some brilliant analysts on this forum and you are one of them and I will never tire of reading your thoughts and have made money thanks to them! So well done to you and all those who backed the winner and opposed the Derby form (which to be fair I always said was good until otherwise proven…today it was proven otherwise!)

Can always rely on my dear friend Stilvi. Class.

74% of his runners have indeed got their head in front. Of the ones who haven’t, many of the beautifully bred fillies will go on to be successful broodmares. After all, he is also proving to be an exceptional broodmare sire.
July 8, 2017 at 23:08 #1309440Of course it goes without saying that those who decried LAST years Derby as useless will now admit they were wrong…..:)

July 8, 2017 at 23:11 #1309441Well done to all Ulysses backers, Botchy, Steve, LS3, Graham(BigG) and Marginal Value and commiserations to Barney Roy backers because that was one hell of a ding dong battle for the line and in a way would have loved it to have been a dead heat for Nathan and all BR’s followers.
Sad to have to accept the fact that Eminent wasn’t up to the task today but thought the idea was going to be to let him bowl along in the front. However, this idea backfired extremely badly as Eminent was pulling far too hard at the start and you could see SDS looking extremely uncomfortable in the saddle for quite a while in the early stages, that for me lost him any chance he had of winning today and of course doubts will be shed as to his ability in future races. I wish Silvestre De Sousa had let Eminent have his head and go on instead of pulling him back, I don’t think he will be in the saddle next time and if Gerald Mosse is available Mr. Meade please get him booked in
..
Well done to the doubters for getting it right about Eminent but for me it was all about following a horse that I truly believed in, a horse that owes me not a penny and a horse that I hope will one day go on to achieve greater things and win over those who doubt his ability to perform in top class company. This may not come anytime soon it could be that Eminent is still showing signs of greeness even as 3yo he certainly needs to learn to settle, as did his sire and I wish that Sir Henry Cecil was still knocking around Newmarket and could have given over some time and advise to Martyn Meade on how best to do this.
And..what’s so crazy about Joni starting a thread about an unbeaten stallion and his progeny stilvi?
A Thread that has won TRF Thread of the Year and to date has had 41,700 Views, has 71 voices and 997 replies as I write this. That shows an incredible interest in a certain Stallion who may very well rule the World and gives a voice to all those who followed Frankel’s journey for 3 years to retire unbeaten in 14 starts and who wish to follow the progress of his progeny. It may be a bumpy start but we’re enjoying the journey win or lose it’s about watching your seedlings bloom into beautiful flowers, some will fall by the wayside but it’s the one’s that flourish against all the odds that you hold most dear..Jac

I think you are getting paranoid here Joni. I wasn’t referring to you at all here.
No need to hark back to other horses either. That muck raking from the past has no place. No point in praising this forum up as the best in the UK and then bringing irrelevant points about other horses, particularly when I have not directed any comment at you.
You should not be making assumptions. I was merely pointing out that I was not revelling in a Frankel horse failing. Just explaining that I felt the horse was a solid lay today.
For all the analysis anyone put in in depth, the most basic point I was making was that Barney Roy held Eminent in the Guineas and Cliffs Of Moher had finished ahead of him the Derby despite probably fading the most badly of the front four. That left Eminent in a position where he had to hope that Barney Roy could not stay as well as himself today, yet still have to hope that Cliffs Of Moher would not be helped by the drop back in trip from the Derby. In the end Cliffs Of Moher nearly got brought down but still beat Eminent and Barney Roy stayed better than Eminent as well. He had two factors to overcome. That’s why I felt he was a lay and poor value.
That’s all it was. Nothing to do with the Sire Frankel at all.
I fully realise we are all wrong more often than correct. What I don’t like is people who infer that my thinking is illogical and then trot out yet more excuses when a horse gets turned over yet again. I have never labelled you as someone who does that, you are honest enough to admit that we are all wrong plenty of the time and give credit where it is due. I still haven’t forgotten that you handed me a lesson in the Oaks!
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
July 8, 2017 at 23:31 #1309444I can see why those who back Eminent do give him chances as the races have panned out against him. Perhaps that means he’s not good enough if he cannot adapt to a way a race is run but it’s hard enough to win a group 1 anyway with everything in your favour let alone when things go wrong and I’d like to see him have his day in the sun but he’s not one I’d be betting on.
I’m still a bit gutted Barney Roy didn’t win but he ran a blinder and digs in, you’d want him on your side in a after nightclub scrap. He gives Hannon options in trip now although I’d prefer it if he was owned by Billy no friends and not have to be planned around other horses the owner has running.
Well done those on the winner, a thrilling finish between the two.

July 9, 2017 at 00:45 #1309449I’ve no strong feelings either way about Eminent, but he pulled for a long way and was either green or temperamental (had a bite at DK or a serious word in his ear). Given how keen he was, I wouldn’t write him off although I wouldn’t back him either until he proves his temperament.

Yes but I imagine those stats change quite dramatically in the one place it really matter: Group 1 races.
Galileo has sired 4 of the 5 winners of the Group 1 races ran so far this season in Ireland, as well as numerous places.
He has sired 7 of the 15 winners of the Group 1 races ran so far this season in Britain, with even more places.
He was the second most prolific sire of Royal Ascot this season with a trifecta, going down narrowly to the late Scat Daddy.
That looks nigh insatiable to me.
July 9, 2017 at 07:57 #1309453At 5s Eminent was the value pre race for me, more than double the price of CoM and going down be a short head there was nowt between them really. Is there a group 1 in Eminent? Not now but I will give him one last go if there is a bit of give in the ground
July 9, 2017 at 09:30 #1309463Stevie – fair points all. I respect you as a poster. I shouldn’t bring up past horses you are right.
Jac – thank you for those lovely words on here and on the Frankel thread. You are the best. You know that I write these things out of love for the horse and, more so, his dear trainer who was my hero.
Nath – Hannon has a good one here mate and yesterday showed that there are plenty of options available to him. Having seen him in the flesh as Newbury I can tell you what an incredible presence he has. A truly gorgeous looking horse. What next I wonder? The Juddmonte? The Irish Champion? Back to a mile for The Sussex? Could he even stay a mile and a half and be an Arc colt? All options are on the table.Back to the drawing board for Eminent and he may need a drop in grade to give him some confidence. Hopefully there will be a nice race in him as he grows up.

July 9, 2017 at 11:03 #1309475Just watching back, I think it was a harder enough run race. The 1st four finishers were the last 5 all the way around with only Lightning Spear failing to pick up.

July 9, 2017 at 12:59 #1309496After this result, is Phil Smith’s desire to compress the Weight for Age scale justified? If the best 3 year old colt of his generation (debatable) can’t slug it out to beat a middling ability 4 year old given 10lbs, imagine what would’ve happened if this lot had met Ribchester over a mile with compressed weights.
Fair enough Ulysses has no doubt improved significantly this season, and he may well prove to be a proper Group 1 competitor, but if he can beat the best 3 year olds conceding 10lbs I see no reason to compress the weights.

67% winners (74% is the number that have run), which is pretty good (though but not standout in terms of Flat stallions). As a broodmare sire, he has a strike rate of 31% foals/58% runners. Total flop Generous (100th the fee perhaps) is at 46%/64%. Both are 3% black type (to foals). I’m not knocking him, but he is not irreplaceable (except to Magnier’s pocket perhaps).
July 9, 2017 at 13:07 #1309498So much for Cliffs being drawn 1 not being an issue…
All this talk and I can’t believe more hasn’t been said about what a brilliantly exciting horse race this was. If you didn’t really enjoy that finish then you’re following the wrong sport. 2 fantastic racehorses battling it out. Barney Roy is an awesome racehorse and Ulysses has obviously improved a lot from last year.
A point I would like to make is that I believe there should be a cutaway at Sandown. All day long if you were drawn low it was a death sentence. The winners on the round course were drawn 8 of 10, 10 of 14, 7 of 8 and 6 of 9. Those drawn low had their chances massively reduced by having nowhere to go: Ariena (drawn 1 and had no way of getting through), Greenside (drawn 2 and was heavily impeded), Pavillon (drawn 1 and was boxed in the whole straight) and Cliffs Of Moher nearly crashed out altogether then had problems up the straight. Very unsatisfactory races run and as it turned out by being drawn wide your chances were increased.
