Form isn’t set in stone. Handicappers often get it wrong. Tipsters trip up on their tips…

But what about having a coincidence bet instead? Mike Yarwood dies and so Post Impressionist wins today at 10/1 😲

Given the many things that happen and are said…

And the massive number of horses names…

    Far from being fate.
Coincidences are only to be expected.

However, the number of coincidence names that don’t win far outnumber those that do.
It’s just the nature of the human brain to forget the losers and remember the winners.

I landed a nice coincidence double a few years back

Anthony van dyck to win the derby
Virgil van dijk motm in the champions league final

Nothing wrong with a small stakes fun bet

    Sometimes they pay big

    :good:

Only one I can remember having is Royal Wedding when Wills and Kate got married. 4/1 if memory serves me correctly. Didn’t even watch the wedding.

On the 25th April 2015 it was the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings , ANZAC Day .
On the same day at Doncaster on his first race start Gallipoli won .
    Reasonable coincidence .

Didn’t know Mike Yarwood was a painter as well, up there with the likes of Van Gogh & Gauguin?

Fear not, form students. I am sure that remains the best way of finding winners.

Would love to hear about any more coincidence winners, it’s all a bit of fun. Someone must have had Party Politics which has to be amongst the most famous coincidence winners.

Indeed, but they’re still amusing…or ironic:

A horse of no account named Plastered In Paris was unplaced at Folkestone the day after Princess Diana was killed

Dickie mentions Party Politics a horse I always called PP. I don’t remember the significance of it winning maybe there was a new government. I do remember being at the newsagents with an eager excitement around 630 am to check it’s price. Looking through Pricewise the biggest price was 14/1.
I rang Paw at 9am (he was awaiting my call)and told him …

” It was a bit patchy but I did get something last night and the horse is Party Politics ”

” What do you mean patchy ?”

“All I got was the letter P but the letter kept coming back it kept repeating itself.”

    ” I’ll get on ”

My preparation for the National each year back then was quite odd. I sometimes stopped betting completely for the three weeks before for my main concern was not finding out any of the intended runners so I had a clear and open mind.
I made sure I had nothing to drink on night before and at about 1 am on the morning of the race, when the night was completely still I sat down in my winged leather armchair (the same I am sitting in now) in the semi darkened room and slowly shut my eyes – You either know or you can guess the rest !

I was about to quote Party Politics but Richard and Gamble beat me to it. There was a General Election in 1992, Party Politics won the 1992 Grand National.

The more I know the less I understand.

Are winners like Royal Wedding and Gallipoli true coincidences though?

tbh I was a little surprised to find the horse Royal Wedding not be a two year old maiden but a 9 year old running in a handicap. However…

The wedding date of 29th April was known since November the previous year.
So the odds of connections running a horse already called Royal Wedding on royal wedding day I’d say was around 1/25… And am sure they’d – of all days – want it to have a good chance of winning (SP 4/1). So the chances of having that “coincidence were around 17 or 18%. Although admittedly the name may have attracted a few more punters so the expected chance could’ve been a little less than 17&. But coincidence backers don’t usually have much on.

And the date of the 100th anniversary of Gallipoli would’ve been known. Am sure connections were targeting a two year old maiden from for the horse on that particular day from some way out. The fact it was its first run makes it even more so. Possibly choosing between two year olds fairly near the time which two year old to name Gallipoli. This horse was also priced in single figures @ 6/1. So the chances of a horse called Gallipoli winning on the 100th anniversary weren’t so small.

    I know, I know…
Any romantic story and I run it to pieces.
    Killjoy aren’t I. :rose:

Funny you should say that, Drone.

On the day of the coincidence – Royal Wedding winning on royal wedding day – there was also a winner called Sweet Irony.

    Coincidence or what?

During the 1982 Falklands War there was a smart colt named Peacetime who won the Sandown Classic Trial and Predominate Stakes before finishing 7th in the Derby at 6/1, fourth fav of 18

My memory is not good enough to recall if this was a theoretical underlay (overbet) but I do recall during that Spring the sporting press banging on about how appropriate a winner of the Derby he would be

Peacetime’s name was probably all about the tail female line.
Being out of Peace, whose grand dam was Suntime.
