Back in 2015 on the 9th November, I noticed these three horses because the formation of their names had a strong element coincidence about them. I put them into a £3.00 straight treble.

    Fourth Act 4/1
    Three Way 7/4
    Second Wave 2/1

    I got back £120

The most famous Coincidence bet was Party Politics in the 1992 Grand National (year of a General Election).

I do see coincidence bets from time to time but think to myself that someone named it for a reason, perhaps they fans of the product.

I did used to back a horse called George William when in big races. As that happened to be my Grandad’s name.

Someone must have had Party Politics which has to be amongst the most famous coincidence winners.

I did fancy it at the time, but I changed my mind and backed Romany King instead.

For those who don’t know Romany King was the runner up to Party Politics that year.

Still the lesson learnt that day was Never Change Your Mind, once you’ve worked out what your backing.

Red Rum spelt backwards is Murder
I reckon every time he won was on a day that someone got murdered somewhere in the world and some one else had a drink of Red Rum maybe even the victim or murderer
If Crisp had won, well you can guess the rest

These are the stories we want, like I said, it’s a bit of fun! The whole point is that, very occasionally, all the form studying in the world is no match for some loosely connected names or something topical.

Did Red Rum come from murder backward or was this a coincidence.

The more I know the less I understand.

Ask that Policeman whose foot he trod on. When he opened a supermarket.

However it comes from his parents

    Sire QuoRUM and Dam MaRED.

Did work with someone who did see Red Rum train on Southport sands.

His mother was called Mared , believe this was part of the reason , she was wild apparently , he was bred for and first won at 5 furlongs …

Like Rich88, how about coming up with a coincidence bet before it occurs? Those are the best ones to regale at a later date. There was a string of blue winners on a Monday not that long ago….

“He was bred for and first won at 5 furlongs”.

Red Rum’s first win as a 2yo was at Aintree in 1967. I am not sure if it was the same day Foinavon won the Grand National but it was the same Aintree meeting.

He dead heated for first place with Curlicue. They shared a paddock together as yearlings. They followed each other into the sales ring and each fetched the same price.

Someone I worked with (now retired) used to do coincidence bets all the time (usually in Grand National).

He told me about the time he put on a bet for his late Mum because his Dad went to fight during the war for Monty, so he backed Monty’s Pass for her.

However his bet included lyrics from songs, so while in Australia over there for the Melbourne Cup he backed Delta Blues (2006) because it was the song lyrics of Walking In Memphis

He writes Redrum in mirror writing but pronounces “Red Room” at least that what’s I hear.

Off now before Chezza or Gamble do their Jack Nicholson impression from this film.

Second premolar bottom right looks to have amalgam due to it’s greying colour but otherwise Jack has an iconic set of gnashers which were perfect for ‘the Wolf’ four years later.

Monday is a busy day for me but will hope for some Brighton rock this afternoon followed by dipping my fingers in the enticingly deep cool lakes in New York. A total of fifteen races which I will view as an observer but ready to pounce if the opportunity presents itself.

I was stuck behind a Polar Express liveried lorry for an excruciating journey in the mid eighties. Seeing a horse of the same name had won at 16s in the paper the following day provided wry amusement through gritted teeth.

More recently, being held up by a Mercedes Sprinter van where white van man must have been on a mogadon / valium cocktail, on the Cheltenham festival Tuesday. Against better judgement I sided with Sprinter Sacre in the Supreme to losing effect.

My dad tried one unsuccessfully in the Grand National in the ’70s. Tarquin Bid ridden by Joe Bracken on the basis that he was doing gardening work for a family whose dogs were called Tarquin and Bracken. He did latch on to Party Politics in ’92 though, breaking a 26 year losing run in the race.

Jack never plays a bad part in any of his movies, Gamble. Even when it’s the villain he plays.
