Cracking race and kudos to both sets of connections for not bottling it – enough to take out of the race to say roll on part two.
Was a ittle surprised that Energumene didn’t go off a little faster in the rearly stages but Shishkin really battled and there was a touch of the Altior about him today.
January 22, 2022 at 15:46 #1579321Wow!
Just… Wow!Value Is EverythingJanuary 22, 2022 at 15:47 #1579322Cannot see Energumene turning the tables at Cheltenham. Everything went in his favour today. It looked like he winged every fence but could not beat Shishkin, even after Shishkin made a mistake.
I wonder if they may consider going for the Ryanair instead?
January 22, 2022 at 15:50 #1579324Just watched the replay. After jumping the last, you would never have thought Shishkin would win by a length.
I cannot see anything beating him up the Cheltenham hill (oops, shouldn’t have mentioned that meeting!).

Good god I hope not! Surely not.

January 22, 2022 at 15:51 #1579327I wouldnt necessarily agree regarding Cheltenham myself. Energuermene looks the more straightforward horse and if Shishkin put in a jump like he did today on his nose at Cheltenham it would possibly be game over.
January 22, 2022 at 15:52 #1579328I think they’ll let Energumene have a go at the champion chase, especially if Allaho wins tomorrow and is in good heart going to Cheltenham. Then Ryanair next year if he gets beaten this year.
January 22, 2022 at 15:53 #1579330Can’t see Energumene switching.
January 22, 2022 at 15:56 #1579332Lost my money, but got my wish. An utter barnstormer with a fag paper between the two. These two could carry some serious excitement when they meet over the next 2-3 years. Boy, did the Jumps need that IMO!

January 22, 2022 at 15:57 #1579334If either of those horses needs a step up in trip its shiskin
He was out of his comfort zone most of the way round and driven hard for a good while before eventually outstaying energumene
And there is zero chance of that actually happening
And there is zero chance willie runs his two best horses against each other in the ryanair
Was one of the best races I have ever seen and it would be a travesty if a rematch doesn’t happen
January 22, 2022 at 15:57 #1579335I’d agree with you CAS.
Ener(gise) always travelled strongly – stronger than Shishkin – and Townend didn’t go as fast as expected and had the run of the race. tbh I was surprised Bass didn’t take him on as his mount needs a real test at this trip. Not that at their bests FF had much chance. Considering how they travelled Shishkin should be better suited by a greater test of stamina and Cheltenham is a stiffer trip than Ascot. So I’d expect Shishkin to come out on top again. However, it is possible either or both will improve further, so can’t be that confident.Value Is EverythingJanuary 22, 2022 at 15:59 #1579337“Ryanair next year if he gets beaten this year.”
Yes, that is likely. If it is the same result at Cheltenham, I cannot see connections continuing to run him in big races where he is going to get beaten when there are other options.
January 22, 2022 at 16:00 #1579338There is no way the Irish horse will switch to the Ryanair after travelling as well as that at 2m.
In fact if switching I’d definitely oppose him.
Likely to be best at 2m around a stiff course in a truly run race.Value Is EverythingJanuary 22, 2022 at 16:02 #1579340“If either of those horses needs a step up in trip its shiskin.”
He dont need it. He’s not lost a 2m chase.
January 22, 2022 at 16:02 #1579341Yeah theyll be no chance of ryanair unless allaho gets injured and CPS can put an irish performance in over here, id say theres every chance it could be reversed as someone above said, shishkin wont get away with the mistakes as easily at chelt and energumenes the better jumper/traveller, its as exciting as it gets, i fully set up today to have an in play bet on shishkin if i could get above 2/1 in running (im assuming he went there can anyone confirm top in running price??) but i got so lost in the race i just closed my laptop, sometimes you just need to watch
January 22, 2022 at 16:03 #1579342Hes not saying he needs it mike, hes saying if one would be suited to it, itd be shishkin not energumene, due to his travelling and jumping
January 22, 2022 at 16:04 #1579343Wonderful, just wonderful race. That was electrifying. A perfect demonstration that Cheltenham is not the be all and end all.
