When a horse retires do you look at trophies/races it won or it’s rating …. Form is fact , ratings is an opinion …
January 18, 2026 at 09:19 #1750918Cyrname achieved a whopper rating because he could consistently run very, very well over 2.5 miles at ascot.
His ability didnt translate to any other track or distance.
January 18, 2026 at 10:35 #1750925All horses need certain conditions in order to show their best form. Arkle probably wouldn’t have run to a high rating over five furlongs on fast ground and I don’t think Dayjur would have been much cop as a staying chaser.
January 18, 2026 at 11:18 #1750927Let’s simplify this , the highest rated horse in every race today won’t win , the best horse in every race today will win , ratings are fine but they aren’t form , as I said form is factual , ratings are an opinion
January 18, 2026 at 12:05 #1750933I’m wondering if IET suffered an injury at the fence before the fall. Overreach and then didn’t look comfortable when out under pressure coming round the home turn – head went left and then he hung right and basically didn’t want to jump that last fence
Moscow Flyer fell at Leopardstown six weeks before winning the Arkle and I think I’d still have IET for the Champion Chase, provided positive news comes to light

Barry’s assessment of the Clarence House form. They say pride comes before a fall but I hope that’s Connell tripping over into the muckheap not Marine falling at the DRF, cos as said upthread, the horse can’t help it.
January 18, 2026 at 20:45 #1750995Who was overhyping it? Most thought it was going to be a bit of a walkover for an irish hotpot against a old favourite and a couple of new pretenders.
He’s a bit of an arse who likes a cheap soundbite. Hopefully the mighty solness humps him for the 4th time at the DRF.
What a shame a class horse like MH has such a classless trainer.
January 19, 2026 at 09:28 #1751011Totally agree Andrew- he’s a moron. Speed figure of 159 makes it a truly run race. I think the ground beat IET but he is not a Cheltenham horse so I wouldn’t have him in March. Marine Nationale is a Festival horse but last year’s race fell in his lap and Solness has beaten him regularly so he’s no world beater. QMCC is very open at the moment.
January 19, 2026 at 09:52 #1751017“Everybody beats Jonbon by eight lengths.”
That must be how he has won 11 Grade 1s, then.
January 19, 2026 at 10:24 #1751018It is a shame one of my favourite horses, Marine Nationale is trained by an ass.
The more I know the less I understand.
January 19, 2026 at 16:29 #1751044If memory serves, this from the man who bought a 10 yr-old hunter for £180k
January 19, 2026 at 16:59 #1751046It’s a game of opinions as well and Barry has quite a few of them. Just wait until March and let Marine Nationale do the talking.
January 19, 2026 at 17:26 #1751048Even if Marine Nationale wins (which I think he will), it still won’t justify much of the disrespectful rubbish he has been talking.
Banter or pub talk is OK but Connell has not only made a fool of himself but shown himself to be a chippy character as well.
